¶ Ol toktok bilong Man bilong autim tok, pikinini man bilong Devit, king long Jerusalem. | The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
Samting nating bilong ol samting nating, Man bilong autim tok i tok, samting nating bilong ol samting nating. Olgeta samting em i samting nating. | Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Man i winim wanem samting long olgeta dispela hatwok bilong em em i kisim aninit long san? | What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
¶ Wanpela lain tumbuna i pinis i go, na narapela lain tumbuna i kam, tasol dispela graun i stap oltaim oltaim. | One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
San tu i kamap, na san i go daun, na em i go hariap long ples bilong em we em i kirap. | The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
Win i go long hap saut, na tanim nabaut i go long hap not. Em i tanim nabaut oltaim, na win i kam bek gen bilong bihainim ol raun bilong em. | The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
Olgeta riva i ran i go long biksi, tasol biksi em i no pulap. Long wanem ples we ol riva i kam long en, long dispela hap ol i go bek gen. | All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
Olgeta samting i pulap long hatwok. Man i no inap kolim dispela. Ai i no ting em inap tru long pasin bilong lukim, o ia i no pulap long pasin bilong harim. | All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
¶ Samting i bin stap bipo, em dispela samting bai stap bihain. Na dispela samting ol i bin mekim pinis em dispela samting ol bai mekim bihain. Na i no gat wanpela nupela samting aninit long san. | The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
Ating i gat wanpela samting we ol i ken tok long en olsem, Lukim, dispela em i nupela? Dispela i bin stap pinis long taim bipo, dispela i stap pastaim long yumi. | Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
I no gat pasin bilong holim tingting long ol samting bilong bipo i stap. Na tu bai i no gat pasin bilong holim tingting liklik long ol dispela samting i kam wantaim ol dispela husat bai kamap bihain. | There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
¶ Mi, Man bilong autim tok, i stap king long bosim Israel long Jerusalem. | I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
Na mi givim bel bilong mi bilong painim na painimaut tru wantaim save tru long sait bilong olgeta samting, dispela ol i mekim aninit long heven. Dispela hatwok wantaim pen i strong tru God i bin givim long ol pikinini man bilong man bilong hatwok long en. | And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
Mi bin lukim olgeta wok, dispela ol i mekim aninit long san. Na, lukim, olgeta em i samting nating na samting bilong givim hevi long spirit. | I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
Dispela samting i krungut pinis, ol i no inap mekim i kamap stretpela. Na dispela samting i sot ol i no inap kaunim. | That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
Mi stori wantaim bel bilong mi yet, i spik, Harim, mi kamap man i gat sindaun i gat bikpela namba, na mi bin kisim save tru moa long olgeta husat i bin stap bipo long mi long Jerusalem. Yes, bel bilong mi i bin kisim bikpela skul bilong laip long save tru na save. | I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
Na mi givim bel bilong mi bilong save long save tru, na bilong save long tingting i longlong na longlong pasin. Mi kisim save long dispela tu em i samting bilong givim hevi long spirit. | And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
Long wanem, long planti save tru planti bel sori i stap. Na em husat i mekim save i kamap planti moa i mekim bel i pilim hevi i kamap planti moa. | For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
