1	하갈을 위기에서 건져 내 주시다 아브람의 아내 사래가 아브람에게 아이를 낳아 주지 못했다. 사래에게는 이집트 여자 노예가 있었다. 그 이름은 하갈이었다.	Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2	사래가 아브람에게 말했다. “자, 보세요, 여호와께서 내가 아이를 낳지 못하게 하시는군요. 내 여자 노예에게 들어가세요. 어쩌면 그 여자 노예에게서 내가 자식을 얻을 수 있을지 모르지요.” 아브람이 사래의 말을 들었다.	And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3	아브람의 아내 사래가 자신의 이집트 여자 노예 하갈을 데려다주었다. 아브람이 가나안 땅에 산 지 10년이 지나서였다. 사래가 하갈을 남편 아브람에게 주어 그의 아내가 되게 했다.	And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4	아브람이 하갈에게 들어갔고, 하갈은 아이를 가졌다. 자신이 아이를 가진 줄 알자, 하갈은 자기의 여자 주인을 하찮게 보았다.	And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5	사래가 아브람에게 불평했다. “내가 부당하게 대우받는 것은 당신 때문이에요. 난 내 여자 노예를 당신 품에 안겨 드렸을 뿐인데요. 하갈이 아이를 가진 줄 알게 되자, 내가 하갈 눈에 하찮아진 것이지요. 여호와께서 나와 당신 사이에서 판가름하실 겁니다.”	And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee.
6	아브람이 사래에게 대답했다. “자, 당신의 여자 노예는 당신 손안에 있어요. 당신 보기에 좋을 대로 그에게 하세요.” 사래가 하갈을 괴롭히자, 하갈이 그에게서 달아났다.	But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7	여호와의 천사가 하갈을 광야의 한 샘가에서 만났다. 수르로 가는 길목이었다.	And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8	천사가 물었다. “사래의 여자 노예 하갈! 어디서 와서 어디로 가는 것이오?” 하갈이 대답했다. “나의 여자 주인 사래에게서 달아나고 있어요.”	And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9	여호와의 천사가 하갈을 타일렀다. “그대의 여자 주인에게로 돌아가 그의 손 아래에서 굽히고 지내시오.”	And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10	여호와의 천사가 하갈에게 말했다. “그대의 후손을 아주 많아지게 해 줄 것이오. 너무 많아 셀 수도 없을 것이오.”	And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11	여호와의 천사가 하갈에게 또 말했다. “자, 그대는 지금 아이를 가진 몸이고 곧 아들을 낳을 것이오. 아이 이름을 이스마엘이라고 지어 부르시오. 그대가 괴로워서 울부짖는 소리를 여호와께서 들으셨소.	And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
12	아이는 야생 나귀 같은 사람이 되고, 그의 손이 모든 사람을 거스르고 모든 사람의 손이 그를 거스를 것이오. 그는 제 모든 피붙이와 반목하며 살아갈 것이오.”	And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
13	하갈은 자신에게 말씀하시는 여호와의 이름을 ‘주님은 엘로이’라고 지어 불렀다. 그가 이렇게 말했기 때문이다. “로이를 내가 여기서도 만나 뵈었는가?”	And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
14	그래서 사람들은 그 우물을 브엘라해로이라고 불렀다. 거기, 그 우물은 가데스와 베렛 사이에 있었다.	Wherefore the well was called Beer–lahai–roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15	하갈이 아브람에게 아들을 낳아 주었다. 아브람은 하갈이 낳은 아들의 이름을 이스마엘이라고 지어 불렀다.	And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
16	하갈이 이스마엘을 아브람에게 낳아 주었을 때, 아브람은 86세였다.	And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
