1	욥을 건드리는 것을 여호와께서 허락하시다 한 사람이 우스 땅에 있었다. 그의 이름은 욥이었다. 이 사람은 완전하고 올곧았다. 하나님을 두려워하며 나쁜 일에서는 벗어나 있는 사람이었다.	There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2	그에게 아들 일곱과 딸 셋이 태어났다.	And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3	재산으로는 양 7,000마리와 낙타 3,000마리와 황소 500겨리와 암탕나귀 500마리가 있었다. 노예도 매우 많았다. 이 사람은 동쪽의 어떤 사람보다도 대단한 인물이었다.	His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4	욥의 아들들은 저마다 생일이면, 돌아가며 집에서 잔치를 벌였다. 사람을 보내 세 누이도 불러, 함께 먹고 마셨다.	And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5	잔칫날이 지나면, 욥은 사람을 보내 자녀들을 불러와서 그들을 거룩하게 하려고 했다. 아침 일찍 일어나 다태우는제물(번제물)을 자녀들의 숫자대로 바쳤다. ‘어쩌면 자녀들이 죄를 짓고 마음으로라도 하나님을 저주하지 않았을까?’ 하고 생각했기 때문이다. 욥은 늘 이처럼 했다.	And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6	하루는 하나님의 아들들이 들어와서 여호와 앞에 섰다. 사탄도 그들 가운데로 끼어들었다.	Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.
7	여호와께서 사탄에게 물으셨다. “어디에서 오는 길이냐?” 사탄이 여호와께 대답했다. “아래 세상에서 여기저기 돌아다니다 왔습니다. 거기서 이곳저곳 살펴보았습니다.”	And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8	여호와께서 사탄에게 말씀하셨다. “네가 내 종 욥을 주의 깊게 보았느냐? 그런 사람은 세상에 없다. 완전하고 올곧아. 하나님을 두려워하고 나쁜 일에서 벗어나 있어.”	And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9	그러자 사탄이 여호와께 대꾸했다. “까닭 없이 욥이 하나님을 두려워하겠습니까?	Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10	주님이 그와 그의 집과 그에게 딸린 모든 것에 울타리를 둘러 지켜 주시지 않습니까? 그가 손으로 하는 일에 복을 내려 주셔서, 그의 집짐승은 땅에 넘쳐 납니다.	Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11	거꾸로 이제 주님이 손을 뻗어 그에게 딸린 모든 것을 건드려 보세요. 그러면 그가 주님 얼굴에 대고 주님을 저주하고야 말 겁니다.”	But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12	여호와께서 사탄에게 말씀하셨다. “자, 그에게 딸린 모든 것을 네 손에 맡기마. 다만 그의 몸에는 손을 대지 마라.” 사탄이 여호와 앞에서 물러났다.	And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
13	자녀와 재산을 잃고도 엇나가지 않다 하루는 욥의 아들딸이 맏이의 집에서 음식을 먹고 포도주를 마시고 있었다.	And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
14	한 심부름꾼이 욥에게 와서 말했다. “황소가 밭을 갈고 암탕나귀는 곁에서 풀을 먹고 있었습니다.	And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15	그런데 세바 사람들이 들이닥쳐서 짐승들을 빼앗아 갔어요. 종들은 칼로 쳐 죽이고요. 저만 혼자 빠져나와 어르신께 알려 드립니다.”	And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16	아직 이 사람이 말하고 있는 도중에, 또 다른 사람이 와서 말했다. “하나님의 불이 하늘로부터 떨어져서 양 떼와 종들을 태워 삼켜 버렸어요. 저만 혼자 빠져나와 어르신께 알려 드립니다.”	While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17	아직 이 사람이 말하고 있는 도중에, 또 다른 사람이 와서 말했다. “칼데아 사람들이 세 무리로 나뉘어, 낙타 떼를 덮쳐서 빼앗아 갔어요. 종들은 칼로 쳐 죽이고요. 저만 혼자 빠져나와 어르신께 알려 드립니다.”	While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18	아직 이 사람이 말하고 있는 도중에, 또 다른 사람이 와서 말했다. “어르신의 아드님과 따님이 음식을 먹고 포도주를 마시고 있었습니다. 맏아드님 댁에서요.	While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
19	그런데 아, 세찬 바람이 광야로부터 불어와 그 집 네 모퉁이를 내리쳤어요. 그러자 집이 그 젊은이들 위에 무너지면서 그들이 깔려 죽고 말았어요. 저만 혼자 빠져나와 어르신께 알려 드립니다.”	And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20	욥이 일어나 자기 겉옷을 잡아 찢었다. 머리도 깎았다. 그러고 나서는 땅에 엎드려 예배했다.	Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21	욥이 말했다. “제가 알몸으로 어머니 배에서 나왔다가 알몸으로 그리로 돌아갈 것입니다. 여호와께서 주셨다가 여호와께서 거두어 가시는 것입니다. 여호와의 이름이 찬양받으시기를!”	And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.
22	이 온갖 일을 겪고서도 욥은 죄를 짓지 않았다. 하나님을 두고서 허튼소리도 하지 않았다.	In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
