1	다윗이 암몬과 시리아를 쳐부수다 이런 다음에 암몬 사람들의 임금 나하스가 죽고 그의 아들이 그를 뒤이어 임금이 되었을 때 일어난 일이다.	Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
2	다윗이 생각했다. ‘나하스의 아들 하눈한테 잘해 주어야지. 그의 아버지가 나한테 잘해 주었으니까.’ 그래서 다윗은 아버지를 잃은 하눈을 위로할 조문단을 보냈다. 다윗의 신하들이 암몬 사람들의 땅에 이르렀다. 하눈을 위로하러 그에게로 갔다.	And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
3	암몬 사람들의 지휘관들이 하눈에게 말했다. “임금님의 눈에는 다윗이 임금님의 아버지를 공경하고 있어서 위로할 사람들을 임금님께 보낸 것으로 보이십니까? 이 땅을 알아보고 뒤엎어 버리려고, 다니며 살펴보려고 그의 신하들이 임금님께로 온 것이 아니겠습니까?”	But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?
4	그러자 하눈이 다윗의 신하들을 잡아다가 그들의 수염을 깎아 버리고, 그들의 옷을 절반으로 잘라 엉덩이까지 오게 했다. 그러고는 그들을 내보냈다.	Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
5	그들이 떠났다. 누군가 다윗에게 그 사람들이 겪은 일을 알렸다. 그는 사람들을 보내어 그들을 맞이하게 했다. 그 사람들이 무척 창피해하고 있었기 때문이다. 임금이 말했다. “여리고에 머물러 있다가 수염이 다시 자라나면 돌아들 오세요.”	Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6	암몬 사람들은 자신들이 다윗에게 매우 밉보이게 된 것을 깨달았다. 그래서 하눈과 암몬 사람들은 은 34톤을 메소포타미아와 마아가의 시리아 왕국과 소바에 보냈다. 자신들을 위해서 그들로부터 전투수레와 기마병을 값을 주고 데려오기 위한 것이다.	And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria–maachah, and out of Zobah.
7	그들은 자신들을 위해서 32,000대의 전투수레와 마아가 임금과 그의 병사들도 값을 주고 데려왔다. 이들은 와서 메드바 앞에 진을 쳤다. 암몬 사람들도 자신들의 여러 도시로부터 소집되어 전투하러 나왔다.	So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
8	다윗이 이 소식을 듣고 요압과 용사들의 부대 전체를 내보냈다.	And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
9	암몬 사람들도 나와서, 전투하려고 그 도시의 출입구에 줄지어 섰다. 도착한 임금들은 그들만 따로 들판에 있었다.	And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
10	요압이 보았더니, 전선이 그의 앞에도 있고 뒤에도 있었다. 그는 이스라엘 가운데서 골라 뽑힌 사람들 중에서 골라 뽑아서 시리아 사람들에게 맞서 싸우도록 줄지어 서게 했다.	Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
11	요압이 나머지 병사들을 자신의 형제 아비새에게 맡겼다. 요압과 아비새는 이들을 암몬 사람들과 전투하도록 줄지어 서게 했다.	And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
12	요압이 말했다. “시리아 사람들이 나보다 힘이 세면 네가 나에게 도움이 되어 주어야 해. 암몬 사람들이 너보다 힘이 세면 내가 너를 도와줄 거야.	And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
13	힘내! 우리가 서로 사기를 북돋우자! 우리 백성과 우리 하나님의 도시들을 위해서! 여호와께서 해 주실 거야, 여호와 보시기에 좋은 일을.”	Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.
14	요압이 자신과 함께한 병사들을 거느리고 전투하러 시리아 사람들 앞으로 다가갔다. 그러자 그들이 그의 앞에서 달아났다.	So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
15	암몬 사람들이 보니 시리아 사람들이 달아나고 있었다. 그래서 그들 또한 요압의 형제 아비새 앞에서 달아나 도시 쪽으로 가 버렸다. 그러자 요압은 예루살렘으로 왔다.	And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
16	시리아 사람들은 자신들이 이스라엘 앞에서 무너진 것을 깨달았다. 그래서 사신들을 보내어 유프라테스강 건너에 있는 시리아 사람들을 나오게 했다. 소박이 하다데셀 군대의 지휘관으로 그들 앞에 있었다.	And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
17	누군가 이 소식을 다윗에게 알렸다. 그러자 다윗이 온 이스라엘을 모아서 요르단강을 건넜다. 그러고서 시리아 사람들 쪽으로 가서 그들 쪽으로 줄지어 서게 했다. 다윗은 병사들이 시리아 사람들에게 맞서 전투하도록 줄지어 서게 했다. 시리아 사람들이 다윗과 전투를 벌였다.	And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
18	시리아 사람들이 이스라엘 앞에서 달아났다. 다윗은 시리아 사람들 가운데서 7,000명의 전투수레 부대원과 40,000명의 보병을 없애 버렸다. 그 군대의 지휘관 소박도 죽였다.	But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
19	하다데셀을 섬기던 사람들은 자신들이 이스라엘 앞에서 무너진 것을 깨달았다. 그래서 다윗과 서로 전쟁하지 않기로 약속하고 그를 섬겼다. 시리아 사람들은 더는 암몬 사람들을 도우려 하지 않았다.	And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
