1	적들이 하나님의 집 짓는 일을 막다 유다와 베냐민의 적들이 소식을 들었다. 사로잡혀 갔던 사람들이 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님을 위해 성전을 짓고 있다는 것이었다.	Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;
2	적들이 스룹바벨과 집안 우두머리들에게 다가와서 말했다. “성전을 함께 지읍시다! 여러분과 마찬가지로 우리도 여러분의 하나님을 찾아 섬깁니다. 그분께 우리도 희생제물을 바치고 있습니다. 아시리아 임금 에살핫돈이 우리를 여기로 데리고 올라온 때부터요.”	Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar–haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
3	스룹바벨과 예수아와 이스라엘 집안의 그 밖의 우두머리들이 그들에게 말했다. “당신들 일이 아니라 우리 일입니다, 우리 하나님의 집을 짓는 일은! 우리끼리 지어 드릴 겁니다, 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께! 페르시아 임금 키루스가 명령한 대로 할 것입니다.”	But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4	그 땅의 백성이 유다 백성의 손에서 맥이 풀리게 했다. 그들에게 겁을 주어 성전 짓는 일을 못 하게 하려 했다.	Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5	유다 백성에게 맞서 참모들을 샀다. 그들의 계획을 무너뜨리려는 것이었다. 페르시아 임금 키루스 때 내내 그러더니, 페르시아 임금 다리우스가 다스릴 때까지 그렇게 했다.	And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6	성벽 짓는 일이 멈추다 크세르크세스가 다스리기 시작할 무렵, 그들은 유다와 예루살렘 주민들을 고발하는 글을 썼다.	And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7	아르타크세르크세스 때에는 비슬람, 미드르닷, 다브엘, 그들의 그 밖의 동료들이 페르시아 임금 아르타크세르크세스에게 글을 썼다. 편지는 아람 글자로 기록되었고 아람말로 번역되었다.	And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
8	“르훔 사령관과 심새 문서 작성관은 예루살렘에 관해서 편지 한 통을 썼습니다. 아르타크세르크세스 임금님께 보내는 것인데, 내용은 이렇습니다.	Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
9	이 글을 올리는 사람들은 르훔 사령관, 심새 문서 작성관, 그들의 나머지 동료들, 재판관들, 고위 관리들, 일반 관리들, 십파르 사람들, 에렉 사람들, 바빌로니아 사람들, 수사 사람들 곧 엘람 사람들입니다.	Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
10	또 나머지 민족들입니다. 곧 위대하며 이름 날리는 분인 오스납발이 사로잡아 가서, 사마리아 성읍과 유프라테스강 건너편 나머지 지역에 살게 한 민족들입니다. 이제	And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
11	임금님께 보내 드린 편지의 사본은 이러합니다. ‘아르타크세르크세스 임금님께, 임금님의 노예들인 유프라테스강 건너편 사람들이 이제 말씀드리겠습니다.	This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
12	임금님께 알려 드립니다. 임금님 곁에 있다가 우리에게로 올라온 유다 사람들이 예루살렘에 와 있습니다. 반역의 성읍, 고약한 성읍을 그들이 다시 짓고 있습니다. 성벽을 마무리하면서 터를 고치고 있습니다.	Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
13	이제 임금님께 알려 드립니다. 이 성읍이 다시 지어지고 성벽이 마무리되면, 그들은 조공도 공물도 통행세도 내지 않을 것입니다. 끝내는 임금들에게 손실을 입힐 것입니다.	Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
14	지금 우리가 궁전의 소금을 먹고 있으므로, 임금님이 부끄럽게 되는 것을 보고만 있을 수 없습니다. 이 때문에 글을 써 보내어 임금님께 알려 드리는 것입니다.	Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
15	임금님께서 조상들의 기록 문서를 뒤져 보시면 기록 문서에서 찾아 알게 되실 것입니다. 이 성읍은 반역의 성읍이고 임금들과 지역들에 손실을 입히고 있습니다. 그 한가운데서 옛날부터 반란이 일어났습니다. 이 때문에 이 성읍이 황폐해진 것입니다.	That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
16	우리가 임금님께 알려 드립니다. 이 성읍이 다시 지어지고 성벽이 마무리되면, 이전에 유프라테스강 건너편에 임금님이 가지신 몫의 땅이 더는 임금님의 것이 되지 못할 것입니다.’”	We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
17	답변서를 임금이 보냈다. “르훔 사령관과 심새 문서 작성관과 사마리아에 사는 그들의 나머지 동료들과 유프라테스강 건너편 나머지 사람들에게. 안녕들 하시오? 이제 답하겠소.	Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
18	그대들이 우리에게 보낸 편지를 내 앞에서 또박또박 소리 내어 읽게 했소.	The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19	내가 명령을 내려 사람들이 뒤져 보고 찾아내었소. 그 성읍은 옛날부터 임금들에게 대들었소. 반역과 반란이 그 가운데서 일어났소.	And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
20	힘센 임금들이 예루살렘에 있어서 유프라테스강 건너편의 모든 사람들을 다스리고 있었소. 사람들이 조공과 공물과 통행세를 그들에게 바쳤소.	There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
21	이제 그대들은 명령을 내려 이 사람들이 일을 멈추게 하시오. 이 성읍을 다시 지어서는 안 되오, 내가 명령을 내릴 때까지는!	Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
22	조심해서 소홀함 없이 이 일을 하도록 하시오. 무슨 까닭으로 임금들이 입는 손실이 커지게 할 것이오?”	Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23	아르타크세르크세스 임금이 쓴 편지의 사본을 누군가가 르훔과 심새 문서 작성관과 그들의 동료들 앞에서 소리 내어 읽었다. 그러자 그들은 서둘러 예루살렘에 있는 유다 사람들에게로 갔다. 그러고는 힘을 써서 억지로 멈추게 했다.	Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24	그래서 예루살렘에 있는 하나님의 집을 짓는 일이 멈추었다. 페르시아 임금 다리우스의 통치 둘째 해까지 멈추어 있었다.	Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
