1	에스더가 자기 민족을 구할 결심을 하다 모르드개는 일어나고 있는 모든 일을 알게 되었을 때, 옷을 찢고 거친 천을 걸치고 재를 끼얹었다. 그러고는 도시 한가운데로 나가서 큰 소리로 부르짖으며 쓰라려했다.	When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
2	그는 왕궁 문 앞까지 갔다. 왕궁 문안으로는 거친 천을 걸치고 들어갈 수 없었기 때문이다.	And came even before the king’s gate: for none might enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.
3	모든 행정 구역마다 임금의 말과 그의 법이 다다르자, 곳곳마다 유다 사람들이 큰 슬픔에 빠졌다. 금식하고 울고 슬퍼했다. 많은 사람이 거친 천을 걸치고 재를 끼얹었다.	And in every province, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
4	에스더의 시중을 드는 여자아이들과 왕궁 관리들이 와서 에스더에게 알려 주자, 왕비는 무척 괴로워했다. 모르드개에게는 갈아입을 옷을 보냈다. 거친 천을 벗기려고 한 것이다. 그러나 그는 받지 않았다.	So Esther’s maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.
5	에스더는 하닥을 불러들였다. 그는 임금이 왕비 앞에 세워 둔 왕궁 관리들 중 한 명이었다. 에스더는 그에게 시켜 모르드개에게 가서 이것이 무슨 일이며 무엇 때문에 이러는지 알아보게 했다.	Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
6	하닥은 나가서 모르드개에게로, 왕궁 문 앞에 있는 도시의 광장으로 갔다.	So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king’s gate.
7	모르드개는 자신에게 일어난 일을 그에게 모두 알려 주었다. 하만이 유다 사람들을 끝장내는 값으로 임금의 금고에 들여놓겠다고 한 돈의 정확한 액수도 알려 주었다.	And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.
8	유다 사람들을 없애라는 법 문서를 베껴 적은 것이 수사에서 반포되었는데, 그것을 모르드개가 하닥에게 주었다. 에스더에게 그것을 보여 주며 알려 주라고 했다. 그리고 에스더에게 강력히 요청하여, 임금한테 가서 불쌍히 여겨 주도록 부탁하라고 했다. 임금 앞에서 왕비의 민족을 위해 빌어 달라고 했다.	Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.
9	하닥은 에스더에게 가서 모르드개의 말을 전했다.	And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.
10	에스더는 하닥과 이야기를 나누고서는 명령하여 모르드개에게 말을 전하게 했다.	Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11	“임금의 신하들과 임금이 다스리는 행정 구역에 사는 모든 백성이 알고 있습니다. 남자든 여자든 부름을 받지도 않았는데 임금에게로 나아가려고 안뜰로 들어가면 죽인다는 하나의 법이 있다는 것을요. 예외로, 임금이 그에게 금지팡이를 내밀어 주면 그 사람은 살 수 있다는 것을요. 나는, 부름을 받지 못해 임금에게로 나아가지 못한 것이 30일이나 됩니다.”	All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
12	모르드개에게 에스더의 말이 전달되었다.	And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.
13	모르드개는 에스더에게 대답을 전하게 했다. “스스로에 갇혀 착각하지 마십시오. 다른 모든 유다 사람들과 달리 왕궁에 있으니 빠져나갈 것이라고!	Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.
14	왕비님이 이때에 아무 말씀도 하지 않고 가만히 계시면, 해방과 구원의 손길이 다른 곳으로부터 유다 사람들에게 미칠 것입니다. 그렇지만 왕비님과 왕비님의 아버지 쪽 집안은 끝장날 것입니다. 누가 알겠습니까, 이런 때를 위해 왕비의 자리에 오르신 것이 아닌지?”	For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
15	에스더는 모르드개에게 대답을 전하게 했다.	Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,
16	“가서 수사에 있는 모든 유다 사람들을 모아 주십시오. 그러고는 여러분이 나를 위해 금식해 주십시오. 3일 동안 밤낮으로 먹지도 마시지도 않아야 합니다. 나도 내 시중드는 아이들과 함께 그렇게 금식하겠습니다. 그런 상태에서 임금님께로 가겠습니다. 법을 따르지 않는 것이지만요. 내가 끝장난다면 끝장나는 것이지요.”	Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
17	모르드개는 가서 에스더가 그에게 지시한 대로 다 했다.	So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
