1	하만이 유다 사람들을 없애려고 하다 이런 일들이 있고 나서 크세르크세스 임금이 함므다다의 아들 아각 사람 하만에게 힘을 실어 높여 주었다. 하만이 앉는 자리를, 그와 함께 있는 모든 관리보다 더 높은 곳에 두었다.	After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.
2	왕궁 문에 있는 임금의 모든 신하는 무릎 꿇고 하만에게 엎드려 절했다. 그에게 그렇게 하라고 임금이 명령했기 때문이다. 그런데 모르드개는 무릎도 꿇지 않고 절도 하지 않았다.	And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.
3	그러자 왕궁 문에 있는 신하들이 모르드개에게 말했다. “어째서 그대는 임금의 명령을 어기고 있는 거요?”	Then the king’s servants, which were in the king’s gate, said unto Mordecai, Why transgressest thou the king’s commandment?
4	그들이 그에게 날마다 말했지만 모르드개는 그들의 말을 듣지 않았다. 그러자 그들은 하만에게 사실을 알렸다. 모르드개가 말하는 것들이 유지될 수 있을지 지켜보려는 것이었다. 모르드개가 그들에게 자신은 유다 사람이라고 밝혔던 것이다.	Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a Jew.
5	하만은 모르드개가 무릎 꿇고 자기한테 엎드려 절하지 않는 것을 보고 화가 잔뜩 났다.	And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.
6	그러나 그가 보기에는 모르드개 한 사람만 손보는 것은 체면이 깎이는 일이었다. 그때 누군가가 그에게 모르드개가 어느 민족 사람인지 알려 주었다. 그래서 하만은 크세르크세스의 온 왕국에 있는 모든 유다 사람, 곧 모르드개의 민족을 없애 버릴 생각을 했다.	And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
7	크세르크세스 임금이 다스린 지 12년째 되는 해 첫째 달인 니산달이었다. 사람들은 하만 앞에서 부르라고 하는 주사위를 던져서, 날을 고르고 달을 골랐다. 열두째 달인 아다르달 열셋째 날이 정해졌다.	In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.
8	하만이 크세르크세스 임금에게 말했다. “이런 민족이 하나 있습니다. 그들은 임금님의 왕국 모든 행정 구역에 사는 민족들 가운데 흩어져서 따로 떨어져 삽니다. 그들의 법은 어떤 민족과도 다릅니다. 임금님의 법을 따르지 않습니다. 그러니 그들을 그대로 내버려두시는 것은 임금님한테 어울리지 않습니다.	And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king’s laws: therefore it is not for the king’s profit to suffer them.
9	임금님께서 괜찮으시다면, 그들을 끝장내라는 문서로 명령을 내리십시오. 그러면 제가 은 340톤을 일 보는 사람들의 손에 맡겨 임금님의 금고로 들여놓겠습니다.”	If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.
10	임금은 도장반지를 손에서 빼내어, 그것을 함므다다의 아들 아각 사람 하만에게 주었다. 그는 유다 사람들을 괴롭히는 사람이었다.	And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.
11	임금이 하만에게 말했다. “그 은은 그대에게 주겠소. 그 민족은 그대 판단에 좋을 대로 하시오.”	And the king said unto Haman, The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.
12	그래서 임금의 문서 작성관들이 첫째 달 열셋째 날에 불려 와서, 하만이 명령한 대로 모두 적었다. 그 문서들은 임금의 파견 행정관들과 각 행정 구역을 맡은 총독들과 각 민족의 관리들에게 보낼 것이었다. 행정 구역마다 거기서 쓰는 글자로, 백성마다 그들이 쓰는 말로 적었다. 크세르크세스 임금의 이름으로 적은 것을 봉하고는 임금의 도장반지로 도장을 찍었다.	Then were the king’s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king’s ring.
13	문서들을 전달꾼들의 손에 들려 임금이 다스리는 모든 행정 구역으로 보냈다. 열두째 달인 아다르달 열셋째 날 하루 동안에 젊은이와 노인, 어린아이와 여자들을 가리지 않고 모든 유다 사람들을 없애고 죽이고 끝장내라는 것이었다. 그들의 재산도 빼앗으라는 것이었다.	And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.
14	문서를 베껴 적어서 모든 행정 구역마다 나누어 주어 법으로 삼게 했다. 모든 민족에게 알려 주어, 그들에게 이날을 준비하도록 한 것이다.	The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day.
15	전달꾼들이 임금의 말에 따라 서둘러 나갔다. 그 법이 수사 성채에 주어졌다. 임금과 하만은 앉아서 술을 마셨다. 그러나 수사 시내는 시끌벅적했다.	The posts went out, being hastened by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.
