1	에스더가 왕비가 되다 이런 일들이 있고 나서 크세르크세스 임금의 노여움이 가라앉았다. 임금은 와스디 생각이 났다. 왕비가 한 일과 그를 두고 결정한 일도 생각났다.	After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2	그때 임금을 받들어 모시는 젊은이들이 말했다. “임금님을 위해 모습이 사랑스럽고 젊은 여자들을 찾아 보게 하시지요.	Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:
3	임금님은 나라의 모든 행정 구역에 일을 맡을 사람들을 세우십시오. 그래서 모습이 사랑스럽고 젊은 여자들을 모두 수사 성채의 하렘(여자 전용 숙소)으로 모으게 하십시오. 그 젊은 여자들을 헤개 곧 임금님의 왕궁 관리로서 여자들을 지키는 사람의 손에 맡기시고, 그들의 화장품을 대 주게 하십시오.	And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king’s chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
4	임금님 마음에 가장 드는 여자를 와스디 대신 왕비로 맞아들이십시오.” 임금은 그 말이 마음에 들어 그대로 했다.	And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
5	수사 성채에 유다 남자가 살고 있었다. 이름은 모르드개였다. 그는 야일의 아들이자 시므이의 손자이자 기스의 증손자로, 베냐민 사람이었다.	Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
6	그는 사로잡혀 온 사람들과 함께 예루살렘에서 사로잡혀 왔다. 이 사람들은 유다 임금 여호야긴과 함께 사로잡혀 왔다. 그들을 사로잡아 온 것은 바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르였다.	Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
7	모르드개는 하닷사 곧 에스더를 돌보고 있었다. 삼촌의 딸이었는데 부모가 없었던 것이다. 이 아이는 생김새가 예쁘고 모습이 사랑스러웠다. 부모를 잃었을 때 모르드개가 자기 딸로 맞아들였다.	And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
8	임금의 명령과 법령이 퍼져 나가자, 많은 젊은 여자가 수사 성채에 모여 헤개의 손 아래로 들어갔다. 에스더도 누군가가 왕궁으로 데려다주어 여자들을 지키는 헤개의 손에 맡겨졌다.	So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
9	에스더는 헤개의 마음에 들어서 그에게 좋은 대접을 받았다. 헤개는 화장품과 나눠 주는 물건을 에스더에게 서둘러 챙겨 주었다. 왕궁에서 가장 뛰어난 여자아이 일곱 명도 붙여 주었다. 또한 에스더와 그 여자아이들을 하렘(여자 전용 숙소)에서 가장 좋은 곳으로 옮겨 주었다.	And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
10	에스더는 자기 민족과 친족에 관해 알려 주지 않았다. 알려 주지 말라고 모르드개가 명령했기 때문이다.	Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it.
11	날이면 날마다 모르드개는 하렘(여자 전용 숙소) 뜰 앞을 서성거렸다. 에스더가 잘 지내고 있는지, 무슨 일이 있는지 알고 싶었던 것이다.	And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women’s house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.
12	젊은 여자들에게는 한 사람씩 크세르크세스 임금에게로 갈 차례가 돌아왔다. 여자들에게 해당되는 법에 따라 12개월이 지난 뒤였다. 이렇게 해야 곱게 꾸미는 날수를 채울 수 있기 때문이다. 6개월 동안은 몰약 기름을 바르고, 6개월 동안은 향품과 여자들의 화장품을 발랐다.	Now when every maid’s turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)
13	이렇게 해서 젊은 여자는 임금에게로 갔다. 그때 여자는 자기가 요구하는 것을 무엇이든 받아서, 그것을 하렘(여자 전용 숙소)에서 왕궁으로 가져갈 수 있었다.	Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.
14	여자는 저녁에 갔다. 그리고 아침에 둘째 하렘(여자 전용 숙소)으로 돌아와서는 임금의 다른 아내들을 지키는 왕궁 관리 사아스가스의 손 아래로 들어갔다. 임금이 좋아해서 이름이 불리는 일이 아니라면, 다시는 임금에게로 갈 수 없었다.	In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.
15	에스더가 임금에게 갈 차례가 돌아왔다. 그는 모르드개의 삼촌 아비하일의 딸이었다. 그를 모르드개는 자신의 딸로 받아들였다. 그때 에스더는 헤개 곧 왕궁 관리로서 여자들을 지키는 사람이 말한 것 말고는 아무것도 달라고 하지 않았다. 그런데도 보는 사람들은 모두 에스더를 마음에 들어 했다.	Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
16	누군가가 에스더를 크세르크세스 임금에게로, 그의 왕궁 안으로 데려갔다. 열째 달인 데벳달이었다. 그가 임금이 된 지 7년째 되는 해였다.	So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
17	임금은 에스더를 그 어떤 여자보다 더 사랑했다. 에스더는 그 모든 젊은 여자를 제치고 귀염과 사랑을 차지했다. 임금은 에스더의 머리에 왕비의 관을 씌우고 와스디 대신에 왕비로 세웠다.	And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18	임금은 모든 관리와 신하를 불러 큰 잔치를 벌였다. 에스더를 위한 잔치였다. 모든 행정 구역에 쉬는 날을 허락해 주고, 임금이 손 크게 선물도 내렸다.	Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther’s feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
19	모르드개가 임금을 구하다 젊은 여자들이 두 번째로 모였을 때였다. 모르드개는 왕궁 문에 머무르고 있었다.	And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king’s gate.
20	에스더는 모르드개가 명령한 대로, 자신의 친족과 민족에 관해 알리지 않고 있었다. 그의 돌봄을 받고 있을 때와 마찬가지로, 에스더는 모르드개가 말한 대로 한 것이다.	Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.
21	그 무렵 모르드개는 왕궁 문에 머무르고 있었다. 그때 임금의 왕궁 관리로 문을 지키던 두 사람 빅단과 데레스는 화가 나 있었다. 그들이 손을 뻗어 크세르크세스 임금을 죽이려 했다.	In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king’s gate, two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.
22	이 일을 알게 된 모르드개는 에스더 왕비에게 알려 주었고, 에스더는 모르드개의 이름으로 임금에게 말해 주었다.	And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai’s name.
23	그 일에 관한 조사가 이루어져 그 일이 사실로 드러났다. 그 두 왕궁 관리는 나무에 매달려 죽었다. 이 일은 임금 앞에서 역사일지에 기록되었다.	And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
