1	와스디 왕비가 쫓겨나다 크세르크세스 때 일어난 일이다. 그는 인도에서 에티오피아까지 127개 행정 구역을 다스렸던 바로 그 크세르크세스다.	Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)
2	그 무렵 크세르크세스 임금은 수사 성채에 있는 자신의 왕국 임금자리에 앉아 있었다.	That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,
3	임금으로 다스린 지 3년이 되었을 때, 그는 모든 관리와 신하를 위해 잔치를 벌였다. 페르시아와 메디아의 군대, 귀족들, 지방 관리들이 그의 앞에 섰다.	In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:
4	그는 어마어마하게 풍요로운 자기 나라와 눈부시게 화려한 자신의 위대함을 보여 주면서, 180일이라는 오랜 날을 보냈다.	When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.
5	이 날수를 다 채우고 난 뒤 임금은 수사 성채에 있는 모든 백성을 불러 잔치를 열었다. 높은 사람과 낮은 사람을 가리지 않았다. 잔치는 7일 동안 왕궁 정원 안뜰에서 열렸다.	And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;
6	흰색과 푸른 보라색 천이 붉은 보라색 고급 리넨 끈에 묶여서 은고리와 대리석 기둥에 걸려 있었다. 바닥에는 금과 은으로 된 긴 의자들이 놓여 있었다. 바닥은 반암, 대리석, 자개, 값나가는 돌로 꾸며져 있었다.	Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.
7	금으로 만든 잔으로 술을 마시게 했다. 잔들은 여러 모양이었다. 임금의 손이 큰 만큼 임금이 내리는 포도주는 넉넉했다.	And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.
8	마시는 데에는 법을 따랐고, 그만 마시라고 하는 사람은 없었다. 임금이 궁궐에 있는 모든 관리에게 이 사람이든 저 사람이든 마음 내키는 대로 하도록 하라고 일러두었던 것이다.	And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.
9	와스디 왕비도 여자들을 위해서 잔치를 벌였다. 크세르크세스 임금의 왕궁에서였다.	Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.
10	일곱째 날 임금은 포도주를 마시고 기분이 좋아졌다. 그는 므후만, 비스다, 하르보나, 빅다, 아박다, 세달, 가르가스에게 말했다. 이 사람들은 크세르크세스 임금을 받들어 모시는 일곱 명의 왕궁 관리였다.	On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
11	와스디 왕비를, 왕비의 관을 머리에 쓴 모습으로 임금 앞에 모셔 오라는 말이었다. 백성과 관리들에게 왕비의 아름다운 모습을 보여 주고 싶었던 것이다. 왕비는 보기에 아름다웠다.	To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
12	그런데 왕비 와스디는 왕궁 관리들을 통해 전한 임금의 말을 듣고도 오기를 마다했다. 임금은 엄청나게 화를 냈다. 분노가 치밀어 올랐던 것이다.	But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
13	임금은 관례를 잘 아는 지혜로운 사람들에게 물어보았다. 임금이 법과 규정을 잘 아는 모든 사람에게 물어보는 것은 늘 있는 일이었다.	Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
14	그와 가까이 지내던 사람은 가르스나, 세달, 아드마다, 다르시스, 메레스, 마르스나, 므무간이다. 이들 페르시아와 메디아의 관리 일곱 명은 임금과 얼굴을 보고 이야기를 나누는 사람들로, 왕국에서 첫째가는 자리에 앉아 있었다.	And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king’s face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)
15	“법에 따르면 왕비 와스디를 어떻게 하는 것이 좋겠소? 왕궁 관리들을 통해 전한 크세르크세스 임금의 말을 따르지 않았소.”	What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
16	므무간이 임금과 관리들에게 말했다. “와스디 왕비는 임금님께만 잘못한 것이 아닙니다. 크세르크세스 임금님이 다스리시는 모든 행정 구역에 있는 모든 관리와 백성에게도 잘못한 것입니다.	And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
17	이제 왕비가 한 일이 모든 여자들 사이에 퍼져 나가면, 그들은 남편을 얕볼 겁니다. 이렇게 말할 것입니다. ‘크세르크세스 임금이 와스디 왕비를 자신의 앞에 데려오라고 했는데 왕비가 안 왔다는군요.’	For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
18	오늘이라도 왕비가 한 일을 페르시아와 메디아에 있는 관리의 아내들이 전해 듣고, 임금님의 모든 관리들에게 말할 겁니다. 그러면서 그만큼 우습게 보고 화내고 하겠지요.	Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
19	임금님께서 괜찮으시다면, 명령을 내려 주십시오. 그것을 페르시아와 메디아의 법에 적어 두어 없어지지 않게 하십시오. 와스디는 이제 크세르크세스 임금님 앞에 나올 수 없고, 왕비 자리는 임금님께서 더 좋은 여자에게 주실 것이라고요.	If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
20	임금님이 내리시는 명령이 이 큰 나라 곳곳에 들리게 하십시오. 그럼 모든 여자들이, 높은 사람과 낮은 사람을 가리지 않고 남편을 떠받들 것입니다.”	And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
21	이 말이 임금과 관리들의 마음에 들었고, 임금은 므무간의 말대로 했다.	And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
22	임금은 자신이 다스리는 모든 행정 구역에 문서를 보냈다. 행정 구역마다 거기서 쓰는 글자로, 백성마다 그들이 쓰는 말로 보냈다. 남자가 저마다 자기 집안을 다스리게 하고 남자의 민족 말로 말하도록 했다.	For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
