1	아비멜렉이 임금이 되다 여룹바알의 아들 아비멜렉이 세겜으로 갔다. 어머니의 형제자매들에게로 가서 말했다. 또 외할아버지 쪽 집안사람들 모두에게 말했다.	And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
2	“세겜의 모든 주인의 귀에 들리도록 말씀드려 주십시오. ‘여러분에게 무엇이 더 좋을까요? 여룹바알의 아들 70명 모두가 여러분을 다스리는 것인가요, 한 사람이 여러분을 다스리는 것인가요?’ 그리고 내가 여러분의 피붙이요 살붙이라는 사실을 기억해 주십시오.”	Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
3	그의 어머니의 형제자매들이 그를 위해 세겜의 모든 주인의 귀에 들리도록 이 모든 말을 전해 주었다. 그러자 그들은 마음으로 아비멜렉을 밀어주기로 했다. 그가 자신들의 집안사람이라는 사실을 생각했기 때문이다.	And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
4	그들은 바알브릿 신전에서 은 조각 70개를 꺼내어 그에게 주었다. 빈털터리이면서도 뻔뻔스럽게 구는 사람들을 아비멜렉이 그 돈으로 샀다. 그런 사람들이 그를 따라다녔다.	And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal–berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
5	그는 오브라에 있는 아버지의 집으로 갔다. 그러고는 자신의 형제들 곧 여룹바알의 아들 70명을 한 바위 위에서 죽였다. 그런데 여룹바알의 막내아들 요담은 몸을 숨겼기 때문에 살아남았다.	And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
6	세겜의 모든 주인과 온 벳밀로가 모였다. 그들이 가서 아비멜렉을 임금으로 삼았다. 세겜에 있는 돌기둥 옆 참나무 아래에서였다.	And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
7	요담이 나무 이야기를 하고 달아나다 요담이 그 소식을 전해 듣자 그리심산으로 가서 그 꼭대기에 섰다. 그러고는 목소리를 높여 그들에게 외쳤다. “내 말을 들어 보세요, 세겜의 주인인 여러분! 그러면 하나님이 여러분의 말을 들으실 것입니다.	And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
8	한번은 나무들이 자기들을 다스려 줄 임금을 찾아 기름을 부으려고 나갔습니다. 그리고 올리브나무에게 부탁했습니다. ‘임금으로 우리를 다스려 주세요!’	The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
9	그러자 올리브나무가 대답했습니다. ‘나더러 기름을 버려두라고요? 그 기름으로 내가 하나님을 받들어 모시고 사람에게도 그렇게 하는데요? 그러고는 가서 나무들을 쥐고 흔들라고요?’	But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10	그래서 나무들이 무화과나무에게 부탁했습니다. ‘당신께서 오셔서 임금으로 우리를 다스려 주세요!’	And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
11	그러자 무화과나무가 대답했습니다. ‘나더러 달콤한 즙과 맛있는 열매를 버려두라고요? 그러고는 가서 나무들을 쥐고 흔들라고요?’	But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12	그래서 나무들이 포도나무에게 부탁했습니다. ‘당신께서 오셔서 임금으로 우리를 다스려 주세요!’	Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
13	그러자 포도나무가 대답했습니다. ‘나더러 새 포도주를 버려두라고요? 하나님과 사람들을 기쁘게 하는 새 포도주를요? 그러고는 가서 나무들을 쥐고 흔들라고요?’	And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
14	그래서 모든 나무가 가시나무에게 부탁했습니다. ‘당신께서 오셔서 임금으로 우리를 다스려 주세요!’	Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
15	그러자 가시나무가 그 나무들에게 대답했습니다. ‘여러분이 참으로 나에게 기름을 부어 여러분을 다스려 줄 임금으로 삼으려는 것인가요? 그렇다면 와서 내 그늘에 들어와서 피하세요. 그렇게 하지 않으면 불이 가시나무에서 나와서 레바논의 삼나무(백향목)를 삼켜 버릴 테니까요.’	And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
16	지금 여러분이 일을 참되게, 또 흠잡을 데 없이 처리하여 아비멜렉을 임금으로 삼은 것인가요? 여러분이 여룹바알과 그분의 집안에 잘해 드리고 있는 것인가요? 그분이 두 손으로 하시던 것에 걸맞게 그분에게 해 드린 것인가요?	Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;
17	우리 아버지는 여러분을 위해 싸우셨어요. 자신의 목숨을 던져 여러분을 미디안의 손에서 건져 내 주셨어요.	(For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
18	그런데 여러분은 오늘 우리 아버지의 집안과 맞서 일어났어요. 그분의 아들 70명을 한 바위 위에서 죽였어요. 그러고 나서는 여자 노예의 아들인 아비멜렉을 임금으로 삼아 세겜의 주인들을 다스리게 했어요. 그가 여러분의 집안사람이라고 해서요.	And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)
19	여러분이 오늘 여룹바알과 그분의 집안을 참되게, 또 흠잡을 데 없이 대했다면, 여러분은 아비멜렉에 대해 기뻐하세요. 아비멜렉도 여러분에 대해 기뻐해야 하고요.	If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:
20	그렇지 않으면 아비멜렉에게서 불이 나와 세겜의 주인들과 온 벳밀로를 삼켜 버릴 테지요. 또한 세겜의 주인들과 온 벳밀로에게서 불이 나와 아비멜렉을 삼켜 버릴 테지요.”	But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.
21	그러고 나서 요담은 도망쳤다. 달아나 브엘로 가서 거기서 살았다. 형 아비멜렉 때문이었다.	And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22	아비멜렉이 이스라엘의 지배자가 되어 3년이 지났다.	When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
23	하나님이 아비멜렉과 세겜의 주인들 사이에 나쁜 기운이 감돌게 하셨다. 그래서 세겜의 주인들이 아비멜렉을 배신하게 하셨다.	Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
24	여룹바알의 아들 70명에게 휘두른 폭력의 대가를 치르게 하려 하신 것이다. 그들의 형제인 아비멜렉이 그들을 피 흘려 죽였듯이, 아비멜렉도 그렇게 죽이려 하신 것이다. 아비멜렉을 부추겨 형제들을 죽이게 한 세겜의 주인들에게도 그렇게 하려고 하신 것이다.	That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
25	세겜의 주인들은 아비멜렉을 힘들게 하려고 여러 산 꼭대기에 사람을 숨겨 두고 기다렸다. 그러고는 그 길로 누가 지나가든지 물건을 빼앗게 했다. 아비멜렉이 그 소식을 전해 들었다.	And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.
26	아비멜렉이 죽다 에벳의 아들 가알이 형제들과 함께 세겜으로 건너왔다. 세겜의 주인들은 가알을 믿어 주었다.	And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
27	그들은 들로 나가서 자신들의 포도밭에서 포도를 거두어들여, 포도즙 틀에 넣고 짰다. 잔치하며 흥겹게 놀았다. 그들의 신전에 들어가서 먹고 마시고 아비멜렉을 저주했다.	And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.
28	에벳의 아들 가알이 말했다. “아비멜렉이 누구길래, 또 세겜이 누구길래 우리가 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 한다는 말인가요? 아비멜렉은 여룹바알의 아들이 아닌가요? 스불은 그가 세운 관리가 아닌가요? 여러분은 세겜의 아버지 하몰의 사람들을 섬기세요. 우리가 왜 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 한다는 말인가요?	And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?
29	이 백성을 내 손으로 움직일 수 있다면, 나는 아비멜렉을 없애 버렸을 겁니다. 내가 아비멜렉에게 병사를 많이 모아 싸우러 나오라고 말했을 겁니다.”	And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
30	그 도시의 책임자 스불이 에벳의 아들 가알의 말을 듣고서는 노여움으로 불타올랐다.	And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31	스불이 속임수를 써서 심부름꾼들을 아비멜렉에게 보내어, 말을 전하게 했다. “보십시오, 에벳의 아들 가알과 그의 형제들이 세겜으로 왔습니다. 그러고는 그들이 이곳 도시를 임금님과 맞서도록 몰아가고 있습니다.	And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.
32	그러니 이제 밤에 일어나시지요. 임금님과 함께한 백성을 임금님 몸소 거느리고 나가서 들에 숨어 기다리시지요.	Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
33	그러다가 아침 해가 뜰 무렵에 일찌감치 일어나 이 도시를 덮치시지요. 보십시오, 가알은 그와 함께한 백성을 거느리고 나가서 임금님과 맞설 텐데, 그때 임금님의 손으로 하실 수 있는 대로 그를 쳐부수시지요.”	And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
34	밤에 아비멜렉이 일어났다. 그와 함께한 온 백성을 거느리고 나가서 세겜에 숨어 기다렸다. 네 부대로 나누어 그렇게 했다.	And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35	에벳의 아들 가알이 나와서 그 도시의 성문 입구에 섰다. 아비멜렉이 그와 함께한 백성을 거느리고 숨어 기다리던 곳에서 일어났다.	And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
36	가알이 그 백성을 보고 스불에게 말했다. “보십시오, 백성이 여러 산 꼭대기에서 내려오고 있군요.” 스불이 그에게 말했다. “당신이 보고 있는 것은 여러 산의 그림자입니다. 사람들처럼 보이는군요.”	And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
37	그러자 가알이 다시 말했다. “보세요, 백성이 ‘땅의 배꼽’에서 내려오고 있어요. 한 부대는 므오느님 참나무 길로 오고 있고요.”	And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
38	스불이 그에게 또 말했다. “당신 입은 어디 있나요? ‘아비멜렉이 누구길래 우리가 그를 섬겨야 한다는 말인가요?’라고 당신이 말했지요. 이들은 당신이 마다하던 백성이 아닌가요? 이제 나가서 그들과 싸워 보세요.”	Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
39	그래서 가알은 세겜의 주인들의 앞에서 나가 아비멜렉과 싸웠다.	And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40	아비멜렉이 그를 뒤쫓자 그는 아비멜렉 앞에서 도망쳤다. 칼에 맞아 쓰러진 수많은 사람들이 성문 입구에 이르기까지 널브러져 있었다.	And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
41	아비멜렉은 아루마에 살았다. 스불은 가알과 그의 형제들을 내쫓아 세겜에서는 살지 못하게 했다.	And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42	다음날 백성이 들판으로 나갔을 때, 아비멜렉이 그 소식을 전해 들었다.	And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43	그는 자기 백성을 거느리고 나가서 세 부대로 나누어, 들판에 숨어 기다리게 했다. 그러고는 보고 있다가 백성이 그 도시에서 나오자 일어나 그들을 쳐 죽였다.	And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.
44	아비멜렉과 그와 함께한 부대는 그 도시로 들이닥쳐서 성문 입구에 섰다. 다른 두 부대는 들판에 있는 모든 사람에게로 들이닥쳐 그들을 쳐 죽였다.	And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.
45	아비멜렉은 그날 온종일 그 도시를 두고 싸웠다. 그 도시를 빼앗고서는 그곳에 있는 백성을 죽였다. 그 도시를 무너뜨리고 거기에 소금을 뿌렸다.	And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
46	‘세겜 망대’에 있던 주인들이 다 이 소식을 듣고는 엘브릿 신전의 땅 아래 방으로 들어갔다.	And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
47	‘세겜 망대’에 있던 주인들이 모였다는 소식을 아비멜렉이 전해 들었다.	And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48	그러자 아비멜렉은 그와 함께한 온 백성을 거느리고 살몬산으로 올라갔다. 아비멜렉은 손에 도끼를 들고 나뭇가지를 잘라 들어 어깨에 메고는 그와 함께한 백성에게 말했다. “내가 어떻게 했는지 보았지요? 서둘러 나처럼 하세요.”	And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.
49	온 백성이 마찬가지로 저마다 나뭇가지를 잘라 아비멜렉을 뒤따라가서 땅 아래 방 위에 두었다. 그 위에 불을 놓아 그 땅 아래 방을 태웠다. ‘세겜 망대’의 사람들도 모두 죽었는데 남녀가 1,000명쯤 되었다.	And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50	아비멜렉은 데베스로 가서 진을 치고 데베스를 공격하여 그곳을 빼앗았다.	Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51	그 도시 한가운데 튼튼한 망대가 있었다. 남자들과 여자들과 그 도시의 주인들이 모두 도망쳐서 그리로 들어가 안에서 잠그고, 망대의 지붕으로 올라갔다.	But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.
52	그러자 아비멜렉이 그 망대로 가서 공격했다. 불을 놓으려고 그 망대 들머리로 다가갔다.	And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53	그때 한 여자가 맷돌 위짝을 아비멜렉의 머리 위로 던졌다. 맷돌이 그의 머리뼈를 부서뜨렸다.	And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.
54	아비멜렉은 그의 무기를 들고 다니는 젊은이를 급히 불러 그에게 부탁했다. “너의 칼을 뽑아 나를 죽여 다오. 내가 여자에게 목숨을 잃었다는 말이 나지 않게 말이야.” 그 젊은이가 아비멜렉을 칼로 찔러 죽였다.	Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55	아비멜렉이 죽은 것을 이스라엘 사람들이 보고서는 저마다 제자리로 돌아갔다.	And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56	하나님이 아비멜렉이 저지른 나쁜 짓을 되갚아 주셨다. 그가 형제 70명을 죽여 자신의 아버지에게 나쁜 짓을 저질렀기 때문이다.	Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57	세겜 사람들이 저지른 온갖 나쁜 짓을 하나님이 그들의 머리에 되갚아 주셨다. 그들에게 여룹바알의 아들 요담이 내뱉은 저주가 내렸다.	And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
