1	미디안의 두 임금을 잡아 죽이다 에브라임 사람들이 기드온에게 말했다. “우리에게 어떻게 이럴 수가 있나요? 미디안과 싸우러 나갈 때 우리를 부르지 않다니요?” 그들은 기드온에게 강력하게 항의했다.	And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
2	기드온이 그들에게 대답했다. “지금 내가 해낸 일이 무엇이 있나요, 여러분만큼요? 에브라임의 남은 포도가 아비에셀의 알짜 포도보다 더 낫지 않나요?	And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi–ezer?
3	여러분의 손에 하나님이 미디안의 지도자 오렙과 스엡을 넘겨주셨지요. 내가 무엇을 해낼 수 있겠어요, 여러분만큼요?” 기드온이 이렇게 말하자, 그제야 그들의 마음이 풀렸다.	God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.
4	기드온이 요르단강에 다다랐다. 자신과 함께한 300명을 거느리고 강을 건넜다. 그들은 지쳤으나 계속 뒤쫓았다.	And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
5	기드온이 숙곳 사람들에게 요청했다. “나를 뒤따르는 사람들에게 빵을 조금 주십시오. 그들이 지쳐 있거든요. 나는 미디안 임금들인 세바흐와 살문나를 뒤쫓고 있습니다.”	And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
6	숙곳의 고위 관리들이 대답했다. “세바흐와 살문나의 손이 지금 당신 손안에 들어오기라도 했소? 그래서 우리가 당신의 군대에게 빵을 주어야 한단 말이오?”	And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
7	기드온이 대답했다. “여러분의 말이 그러하므로, 여호와께서 세바흐와 살문나를 내 손에 넘겨주실 때 봅시다. 내가 광야의 가시덤불과 들가시나무로 여러분의 살을 짓이겨 버릴 것이오.”	And Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
8	기드온은 거기서 브누엘로 올라가서 그곳 사람들에게도 이처럼 말했다. 그런데 브누엘 사람들도 숙곳 사람들이 대답한 것처럼 대답했다.	And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
9	기드온이 브누엘 사람들에게 말했다. “내가 아무 탈 없이 돌아올 때 봅시다. 이 망대를 무너뜨려 버릴 것이오.”	And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
10	세바흐와 살문나는 가르골에 있었다. 그들이 거느린 군대는 15,000명쯤이었다. 그들은 모두 동쪽 사람들 가운데서 남은 사람들이었다. 칼로 무장한 군인 120,000명은 이미 죽었다.	Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
11	기드온은 노바흐와 욕브하 동쪽에서 천막생활을 하는 사람들의 길로 올라가서 그 진영으로 들이닥쳤다. 그 진영은 마음을 놓고 있었던 것이다.	And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.
12	세바흐와 살문나는 도망쳤다. 기드온이 뒤쫓아 가서 미디안의 두 임금인 세바흐와 살문나를 붙잡았다. 온 진영이 놀라고 무서워 떨었다.	And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.
13	요아스의 아들 기드온은 전투를 마치고 헤레스 오르막에서 돌아왔다.	And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,
14	숙곳 사람 가운데서 아이 하나를 붙잡아 그에게 자세히 물어보았다. 그러자 그가 기드온에게 숙곳의 고위 관리들과 원로 77명의 이름을 적어 주었다.	And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.
15	기드온은 숙곳 사람들에게 가서 말했다. “여기에 세바흐와 살문나가 있소. 당신들은 나에게 비아냥거리며 말했지요. ‘세바흐와 살문나의 손이 지금 당신 손안에 들어오기라도 했소? 그래서 우리가 당신이 거느린 지친 사람들에게 빵을 주어야 한단 말이오?’라고.”	And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
16	기드온은 그 도시의 원로들을 붙잡았다. 또 광야의 가시덤불과 들가시나무를 가져갔다. 그것으로 숙곳 사람들에게 본때를 보여 주었다.	And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
17	또 브누엘의 망대를 무너뜨리고 그 도시의 사람들을 죽였다.	And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
18	그러고는 세바흐와 살문나에게 물었다. “너희가 다볼에서 죽인 사람들은 어디 사람들이냐?” 그들이 대답했다. “그들은 너처럼 하나같이 그 모습이 임금의 자식 같았어.”	Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
19	기드온이 또 말했다. “그들은 나의 형제들 곧 우리 어머니 자식들이야. 여호와께서 살아 계심을 걸고 말하지. 너희가 그들을 살려 주었더라면, 나도 너희를 죽이지 않을 텐데.”	And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
20	기드온이 맏아들 예델에게 일어나서 그들을 죽이라고 했다. 그런데 그 아이는 두려워서 칼을 뽑지 못했다. 아직 어렸기 때문이다.	And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
21	세바흐와 살문나가 말했다. “네가 일어나 우리에게 덤벼들어라. 사람은 됨됨이에 걸맞게 힘을 쓰는 법이거든.” 기드온이 일어나서 세바흐와 살문나를 죽이고는, 그들의 낙타 목에 있던 달 모양 장신구를 가져갔다.	Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
22	기드온이 만든 에봇을 이스라엘이 섬기다 이스라엘 사람들이 기드온에게 매달렸다. “우리를 다스려 주십시오, 재판관(사사)님! 당신의 아들, 당신의 손자도요. 당신께서 우리를 미디안의 손에서 구해 주셨으니까요.”	Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
23	기드온이 그들에게 대답했다. “그대들을 다스려야 하는 것은 내가 아닙니다. 내 아들이 그대들을 다스려서도 안 됩니다. 여호와께서 그대들을 다스리셔야 합니다.”	And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
24	기드온이 그들에게 또 말했다. “그대들에게 부탁드릴 것이 있습니다. 저마다 빼앗은 귀고리를 내게 주십시오.” 미디안 사람들에게는 금귀고리가 있었던 것이다. 그들은 이스마엘 사람들이었기 때문이다.	And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
25	이스라엘 사람들이 기꺼이 주겠다고 대답했다. 그러고는 옷자락을 펼쳐 놓고, 저마다 빼앗은 귀고리를 거기에 던졌다.	And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
26	기드온이 부탁하여 받은 금귀고리의 무게는 금 20.4킬로그램이었다. 그 밖에도 달 모양의 장신구와 또 다른 귀고리와 미디안 임금들이 입었던 붉은 보라색 옷이 있었다. 또한 그들의 낙타 목에 둘렀던 목걸이도 있었다.	And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.
27	기드온은 받은 금으로 에봇을 만들어서 자신의 도시인 오브라에 두었다. 그러자 온 이스라엘이 거기서 그것을 섬기며 놀아났다. 그래서 그 에봇이 기드온과 그의 집에 덫이 되었다.	And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.
28	미디안은 이스라엘 사람들 앞에서 무릎 꿇어서 더는 머리를 들지 못했다. 그 땅에 평화가 깃들어 40년이 지났다. 기드온이 사는 동안 그러했다.	Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
29	기드온이 죽다 요아스의 아들 여룹바알이 돌아가서 자기 집에서 살았다.	And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
30	기드온에게는 그의 몸에서 난 아들이 70명 있었다. 아내가 많이 있었기 때문이다.	And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.
31	세겜에 있는 다른 아내도 그에게 아들을 낳아 주었다. 그러자 그가 아이의 이름을 아비멜렉이라고 지어 불렀다.	And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.
32	요아스의 아들 기드온은 오래 잘 살다가 죽어서, 아비에셀의 땅 오브라에 있는 아버지 요아스의 무덤에 묻혔다.	And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites.
33	기드온이 죽자, 이스라엘 사람들은 다시 바알들을 뒤따라 놀아났고, 바알브릿을 그들의 하나님으로 삼았다.	And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal–berith their god.
34	이스라엘 사람들은 둘레에 있는 모든 원수의 손에서 그들을 빼내어 주신 여호와 그들의 하나님을 기억하지 않았다.	And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
35	그들은 여룹바알 곧 기드온이 이스라엘에게 온갖 좋은 일로 잘해 준 것처럼 그의 집안에 잘해 주지는 않았다.	Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
