1	입다가 이스라엘의 우두머리가 되다 길르앗 사람 입다는 용감한 사람이었다. 그는 성매매 여성의 아들이었지만, 입다의 아버지는 길르앗이었다.	Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.
2	길르앗의 아내도 길르앗에게 아들을 여럿 낳아 주었다. 그 아내의 아들들이 자라서는 입다를 내쫓았다. 그들은 입다에게 말했다. “우리 아버지의 집에서 네가 물려받을 것은 하나도 없어. 너는 다른 여자의 아들이거든.”	And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
3	입다는 형제들에게서 달아나 돕 땅에서 살았다. 빈털터리들이 입다에게 몰려들어 그와 함께 나다녔다.	Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.
4	얼마 지나서 암몬 사람들이 이스라엘에게 싸움을 걸어왔다.	And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
5	암몬 사람들이 이스라엘에게 싸움을 걸어오자, 길르앗의 원로들이 나서서 입다를 돕 땅에서 데려오려고 했다.	And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:
6	그래서 입다에게 부탁했다. “와서 우리의 대장이 되어 주게! 그러면 우리가 암몬 사람들과 싸울 수 있겠네.”	And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
7	입다가 길르앗의 원로들에게 대답했다. “나를 미워하여 우리 아버지 집에서 내쫓은 것이 바로 여러분 아닌가요? 그런 여러분이 왜 지금 나를 찾아오셨습니까? 여러분에게 어려움이 닥쳐서지요?”	And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
8	길르앗의 원로들이 입다에게 또 부탁했다. “그래서 우리가 지금 자네에게 돌아온 걸세. 우리와 함께 가서 암몬 사람들과 싸워 주게! 우리의 우두머리가 되어 주게. 길르앗에 사는 모든 사람을 위한 일일세.”	And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
9	입다가 길르앗의 원로들에게 대답했다. “여러분이 나를 돌아가게 해서 내가 암몬 사람들과 싸우게 하려 하시는군요. 여호와께서 그들을 내 앞에 넘겨주신다면, 정말 내가 여러분에게 우두머리가 되겠습니까?”	And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the Lord deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
10	길르앗의 원로들이 입다에게 말했다. “우리가 나누는 말을 여호와께서 듣고 계시지 않는가! 반드시 자네 말대로 할 것일세.”	And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The Lord be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
11	입다가 길르앗의 원로들과 함께 갔다. 그러자 백성이 그를 그들의 우두머리와 대장으로 삼았다. 입다는 여호와 앞에서 자기가 할 말을 모두 했다. 미스바에서였다.	Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the Lord in Mizpeh.
12	암몬 사람들의 임금에게 따지다 입다가 암몬 사람들의 임금에게 심부름꾼들을 보내어 말하게 했다. “우리와 임금님 사이에 무슨 일이 있었다고 우리에게 와서 우리 나라와 싸우려 하십니까?”	And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
13	암몬 사람들의 임금이 입다가 보낸 심부름꾼들에게 대답했다. “이스라엘이 이집트에서 올라올 때 내 땅을 빼앗았기 때문일세. 아르논에서 얍복과 요르단강까지였어. 이제 그 여러 지역을 고스란히 돌려주게.”	And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
14	입다가 암몬 사람들의 임금에게 다시 심부름꾼들을 보냈다.	And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:
15	그들이 임금에게 말했다. “입다께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘이스라엘이 모압 땅과 암몬 사람들의 땅은 빼앗지 않았습니다.	And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:
16	이집트에서 올라올 때 이스라엘은 광야를 거쳐 홍해까지 갔다가 가데스로 갔습니다.	But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
17	이스라엘이 에돔 임금에게 심부름꾼들을 보내어 임금의 땅을 지나가게 해 달라고 부탁했습니다. 그런데 에돔 임금이 듣지 않았습니다. 모압 임금에게도 사람을 보냈습니다. 그런데 그도 그렇게 해 주려고 하지 않았습니다. 그래서 이스라엘은 가데스에 머물렀습니다.	Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
18	그들은 광야로 들어가서 에돔 땅과 모압 땅을 돌아서 갔습니다. 모압 땅을 해 돋는 쪽에서 바라보고 갔습니다. 그리고 아르논 건너편에 진을 쳤습니다. 모압 영토로는 들어가지 않았습니다. 아르논이 모압의 국경이었으니까요.	Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.
19	이스라엘은 심부름꾼들을 시혼에게 보냈습니다. 그는 아모리 사람들의 임금으로 헤스본의 임금이었습니다. 이스라엘은 그의 땅을 지나 우리 갈 곳으로 가게 해 달라고 부탁했습니다.	And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.
20	그런데 시혼은 이스라엘을 믿지 못해 그의 영토로 지나가지 못하게 했습니다. 또한 시혼은 그의 온 백성을 모아 야하스에 진을 치고 이스라엘과 싸웠습니다.	But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21	여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 시혼과 그의 온 백성을 이스라엘의 손에 넘겨주셨습니다. 그래서 이스라엘이 그들을 물리쳤습니다. 이스라엘은 그 땅에 살고 있던 아모리 사람들의 온 땅을 차지했습니다.	And the Lord God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22	그들은 아모리 사람들의 온 영토를 차지했는데, 아르논에서 얍복까지, 또 광야에서 요르단강까지였습니다.	And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.
23	이제 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님이 그의 백성인 이스라엘 앞에서 아모리 사람들을 몰아내 주셨는데, 임금님께서 그 땅을 차지하시려는 것입니까?	So now the Lord God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
24	임금님은 임금님의 신 그모스가 임금님에게 차지하게 하신 것을 차지하지 않으시겠습니까? 우리는 여호와 우리 하나님께서 우리 앞에서 차지하게 하신 것이라면 무엇이든지 차지할 것입니다.	Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the Lord our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
25	지금 임금님께서는 모압 임금 십볼의 아들 발락보다 참으로 더 낫습니까? 그가 이스라엘과 제대로 다투거나 싸워 본 적이 있습니까?	And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
26	이스라엘은 헤스본과 그에 딸린 여러 마을, 아로엘과 그에 딸린 여러 마을, 아르논 곁에 있는 모든 도시에 300년을 살았습니다. 그런데 임금님과 임금님의 백성은 그동안 왜 찾아가지 않았습니까?	While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
27	우리는 임금님께 죄를 짓지 않았는데, 임금님께서는 우리한테 쳐들어와서 해코지하고 계십니다. 판가름하는 분이신 여호와께서 오늘 이스라엘 사람들과 암몬 사람들 사이에서 판가름해 주시기 바랍니다.’”	Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.
28	그러나 암몬 사람들의 임금은 입다가 그에게 사람을 보내어 전한 말을 듣지 않았다.	Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29	입다가 암몬 사람들을 쳐부수다 여호와의 영이 입다에게 내려와 계셨다. 그래서 입다는 길르앗과 므낫세를 지나가고, 길르앗의 미스베도 지나갔다. 길르앗의 미스베에서는 암몬 사람들에게로 건너갔다.	Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30	입다가 여호와께 단단히 약속드린다고 하면서 이렇게 아뢰었다. “주님이 암몬 사람들을 반드시 제 손에 넘겨주실 것입니다.	And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
31	그래서 내가 암몬 사람들에게서 아무 탈 없이 돌아올 것입니다. 그때 우리 집 문에서 나를 맞이하러 나오는 사람은 여호와의 것이 될 것입니다. 다태우는제물(번제물)로 그를 바치겠습니다.”	Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32	입다는 암몬 사람들에게로 건너가서 쳐들어갔다. 그러자 여호와께서 그들을 그의 손에 넘겨주셨다.	So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hands.
33	입다는 아로엘에서 민닛에 이르기까지 스무 곳의 도시를 쳐부수었다. 또 아벨그라밈에 이르기까지 매우 큰 패배를 안겨 주었다. 암몬 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들 앞에서 무릎을 꿇었다.	And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34	입다가 딸을 제물로 바치다 입다는 미스바에 있는 그의 집으로 돌아왔다. 그런데 이런, 그의 딸이 그를 맞이하러 작은북을 들고 둥글게 줄지어 춤을 추며 나오는 것이 아닌가! 그는 단 하나뿐인 딸이었다. 입다에게는 그 밖에 다른 아들도 딸도 없었다.	And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
35	입다가 딸을 보고서는 자기 옷을 잡아 찢으며 말했다. “아이고, 얘야! 네가 나를 이토록 큰 불행에 빠뜨리다니! 나를 불행으로 몰아넣는 것이 너라니! 내가 내 입을 열어 여호와께 말씀드렸으므로 돌이킬 수 없구나.”	And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
36	입다의 딸이 말했다. “아버지, 아버지가 아버지의 입을 열어 여호와께 말씀하셨지요. 아버지 입에서 나온 말씀대로 제게 하십시오. 여호와께서 아버지를 위해 아버지의 원수인 암몬 사람들에게 앙갚음해 주셨으니까요.”	And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
37	딸이 아버지에게 또 말했다. “제가 이 일만은 하도록 허락해 주십시오. 제게 두 달만 시간을 주십시오. 제가 아직 처녀이기 때문에 산 위로 올라가서 울고 오려고요. 제가 친구들과 함께요.”	And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
38	입다는 그렇게 하라고 하고서는 딸을 보내어 두 달을 지내게 했다. 딸은 친구들과 함께 산 위로 올라가서 울었다. 그가 아직 처녀이기 때문이었다.	And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
39	두 달이 지나자 딸이 아버지에게 돌아왔다. 입다는 그가 여호와께 단단히 약속드린 대로 딸에게 했다. 딸은 남자를 알지 못했다. 그 뒤로 이스라엘에는 한 가지 전통이 생겼다.	And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
40	이스라엘의 딸들이 해마다 4일씩 나가서 길르앗 사람 입다의 딸을 생각하며 슬픈 노래를 부르는 것이다.	That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
