1	언약상자가 필리스티아에서 두려움을 불러일으키다 필리스티아 사람들이 하나님의 상자(궤)를 빼앗아다가, 그것을 에벤에셀에서 아스돗으로 옮겨 갔다.	And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben–ezer unto Ashdod.
2	필리스티아 사람들이 하나님의 상자(궤)를 가져다가, 그것을 다곤의 집으로 옮겨 갔다. 그러고는 그것을 다곤 옆에 두었다.	When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3	다음날 아스돗 사람들이 일찍 일어났다. 그런데, 보라, 다곤이 여호와의 상자(궤) 앞에 그 얼굴을 땅에 대고 고꾸라져 있는 것이 아닌가! 그들은 다곤을 들어 제자리에 가져다 놓았다.	And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4	그들이 다음날 아침에도 일찍 일어났다. 그런데, 보라, 다곤이 여호와의 상자(궤) 앞에 그 얼굴을 땅에 대고 고꾸라져 있는 것이 아닌가! 다곤의 머리와 두 팔의 손은 잘려 문지방에 있었다. 오직 몸만 다곤에게 남겨져 있었다.	And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5	이 때문에 다곤의 제사장들과 다곤의 집에 들어오는 사람들은 모두 아스돗에 있는 다곤의 문지방은 밟지 않는다. 오늘까지도 그렇다.	Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6	여호와의 손이 아스돗 사람들을 무겁게 내리누르고 있었다. 여호와께서 그들을 정신 차리지 못하게 만들었다. 아스돗과 주변 지역들을 부스럼으로 치셨다.	But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7	아스돗 사람들이 이런 일을 보고는 서로 말했다. “이스라엘의 하나님의 상자(궤)가 우리한테 머물러 있게 해서는 안 되겠다. 그의 손이 우리와 우리의 신 다곤을 내리눌러 힘들게 하고 있기 때문이다.”	And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8	그들이 사람을 보내어 필리스티아의 모든 우두머리들을 그들에게로 모이게 해 놓고 물었다. “이스라엘의 하나님의 상자(궤)를 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까?” 우두머리들이 대답했다. “가드로 이스라엘의 하나님의 상자(궤)를 옮겨 보내도록 합시다.” 그들은 이스라엘의 하나님의 상자(궤)를 옮겨 보냈다.	They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9	그것을 옮겨 보내고 난 다음에 일이 일어났다. 여호와의 손이 그 도시를 맞서자 몹시 큰 두려움이 생겨났다. 여호와께서 그 도시 사람들을 작은 사람부터 큰 사람까지 치셔서, 그들에게 부스럼이 번진 것이다.	And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10	그러자 그들이 하나님의 상자(궤)를 에그론으로 보냈다. 하나님의 상자(궤)가 에그론으로 들어올 때 일이 일어났다. 에그론 사람들은 이렇게 소리친 것이다. “이스라엘의 하나님의 상자(궤)를 우리에게로 돌리다니! 우리와 우리 백성을 죽이려는 거냐?”	Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
11	그들이 사람을 보내어 필리스티아의 모든 우두머리들을 모이게 해 놓고 말했다. “이스라엘의 하나님의 상자(궤)를 내보내세요. 제자리로 돌아가도록요. 우리와 우리 백성을 죽이게 해서는 안 돼요.” 죽음에 대한 두려움이 온 도시에 가득했다. 하나님의 손이 그곳을 무겁게 내리누르고 있었다.	So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12	죽지 않은 사람들은 여호와께서 치셔서 부스럼이 났다. 그 도시의 부르짖음이 하늘로 치솟았다.	And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
