1	사무엘의 말이 온 이스라엘에 알려졌다. 이스라엘은 필리스티아 사람들을 맞아 전쟁하려고 나갔다. 그들은 에벤에셀에 진을 쳤고, 필리스티아 사람들은 아벡에 진을 쳤다.	And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben–ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2	언약상자를 빼앗기다 필리스티아 사람들이 이스라엘을 맞아 줄지어 나섰다. 전투가 벌어지자, 이스라엘이 필리스티아 사람들 앞에 무너졌다. 그들이 들에 줄지어 나섰던 4,000여 명을 쳐부순 것이다.	And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3	병사들이 진영으로 돌아오자 이스라엘 원로들이 말했다. “무슨 까닭으로 오늘 여호와께서 우리를 필리스티아 사람들 앞에서 무너지게 하신 걸까요? 여호와의 언약상자를 실로에서 우리에게로 가져옵시다. 그리고 우리 가운데 둡시다. 그러면 그것이 우리를 우리 원수들의 손아귀로부터 구해 줄 겁니다.”	And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4	백성은 실로에 사람을 보냈다. 그리고 거기에서 크룹 위에 앉아 계신 전능하신 여호와의 언약상자를 옮겨 왔다. 거기에는 엘리의 두 아들이 하나님의 언약상자와 함께 있었다. 홉니와 비느하스였다.	So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5	여호와의 언약상자가 진영으로 들어오자 온 이스라엘이 크게 환호성을 내질렀다. 땅이 흔들릴 정도였다.	And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6	필리스티아 사람들이 그 환호 소리를 듣고는 말했다. “히브리 사람들의 진영에서 나는 이 큰 환호 소리가 무엇이냐?” 그들이 알아챘다. 여호와의 상자(궤)가 그 진영으로 들어온 것이다.	And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
7	필리스티아 사람들은 두려웠다. 신이 그 진영으로 들어오셨다고 생각한 것이다. 그들은 말했다. “우린 큰일 났구나. 전에는 이 같은 일이 없었는데.	And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8	우린 큰일 났구나. 누가 우리를 구해 낼까, 이 강력한 신의 손에서? 광야에서 이집트에 온갖 큰 패배를 안겨 주신 신이야.	Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
9	힘을 내라. 남자다워야 한다, 필리스티아 사람들아! 그들이 너희를 섬겼던 것처럼 너희가 히브리 사람들을 섬기지 않도록! 남자답게 전투해야 해.”	Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10	필리스티아 사람들이 전투를 벌이자 이스라엘이 무너졌다. 저마다 자기 천막으로 달아났다. 매우 큰 패배를 맛본 것이었다. 이스라엘에서 보병이 30,000명이나 쓰러졌다.	And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11	그리고 하나님의 상자(궤)를 빼앗겼다. 엘리의 두 아들도 죽었다. 홉니와 비느하스였다.	And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12	엘리가 죽다 한 베냐민 사람이 전열을 벗어나 내달렸다. 그날 실로에 들어왔다. 그의 옷은 찢겨 있었고 머리는 먼지투성이였다.	And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13	그가 들어왔는데, 저기, 엘리가 길가 의자에 앉아 내다보고 있었다. 그의 마음이 하나님의 상자(궤) 때문에 초조했던 것이다. 그 사람은 그 도시에 들어와 소식을 알렸다. 그러자 온 도시가 부르짖었다.	And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14	부르짖는 소리를 엘리가 듣고 물었다. “이 떠들썩한 소리가 무엇이냐?” 그러자 그 사람이 재빠르게 와서 엘리에게도 알려 주었다.	And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
15	엘리는 98세였다. 그 눈이 뻣뻣해져서 잘 볼 수 없었다.	Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.
16	그 사람이 엘리에게 말했다. “저는 전열에서 빠져나온 사람입니다. 제가 오늘 전열을 벗어나 도망쳐 왔습니다.” 그러자 그가 물었다. “이보게, 전쟁 상황이 어떤가?”	And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
17	그 소식꾼이 대답하여 말했다. “이스라엘이 필리스티아 사람들 앞에서 달아났습니다. 또한 병사들은 큰 패배를 맛보았습니다. 또한 제사장님의 두 아들도 죽었습니다. 홉니와 비느하스가요. 하나님의 상자(궤)는 빼앗기고 말았습니다.”	And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18	그가 하나님의 상자(궤)에 대하여 말할 때 일이 일어났다. 문 옆에서 엘리가 의자로부터 뒤로 넘어진 것이다. 그는 목이 부러져 죽고 말았다. 늙고 무거운 사람이었기 때문이다. 바로 그가 40년 동안 이스라엘을 재판관(사사)으로서 이끌었다.	And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19	비느하스의 아내가 죽다 그의 며느리 곧 비느하스의 아내가 아이를 가져 낳을 즈음이었다. 하나님의 상자(궤)를 빼앗기고 시아버지와 남편이 죽었다는 소식을 들었다. 그러자 진통이 그에게 밀어닥쳤고 고부라져 아이를 낳았다.	And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20	그가 죽어 가자 옆에 있던 여자들이 그에게 말했다. “겁내지 말아요, 아들을 낳았으니까요.” 하지만 그는 대답도 하지 않고 관심을 기울이지도 않았다.	And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21	그는 아기를 이가봇이라고 불렀다. 그가 말했다. “영광이 이스라엘을 떠났어!” 하나님의 상자(궤)를 빼앗긴 것과 또 그의 시아버지와 남편을 두고 말한 것이었다.	And she named the child I–chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
22	그가 말했다. “영광이 이스라엘을 떠났어. 하나님의 상자(궤)를 빼앗겼으니까.”	And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
