1	여호와께서 사무엘을 부르시다 소년 사무엘이 여호와를 섬기는 사람이 되어 엘리 제사장 앞에 있었다. 그때에 여호와의 말씀이 드물었고, 환상이 널리 나타나지 않았다.	And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2	어느 날이었다. 엘리가 자기 자리에 누워 있었다. 그때 그의 눈은 이미 어둡기 시작해서 더는 제대로 볼 수 없었다.	And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3	하나님의 등불은 아직 꺼지지 않았고, 사무엘은 여호와의 성전 안에 누워 있었다. 거기는 하나님의 상자(궤)가 있는 곳이었다.	And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
4	여호와께서 사무엘을 부르셨다. 그가 대답했다. “저, 여기 있습니다.”	That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
5	그가 엘리에게 뛰어가 말했다. “저, 여기 왔습니다. 제사장님이 저를 부르셔서요.” 그러자 엘리가 말했다. “난 부르지 않았어. 돌아가 누워라.” 그래서 그는 가서 누웠다.	And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6	여호와께서 거듭 다시 부르셨다. “사무엘아!” 사무엘이 일어나 엘리에게 가서 말했다. “저, 여기 왔습니다. 제사장님이 저를 부르셨지요.” 그가 말했다. “난 부르지 않았어, 얘야. 돌아가 누워라.”	And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7	사무엘이 아직 여호와를 알지 못했고, 아직은 여호와의 말씀이 그에게 계시되지 않았다.	Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.
8	여호와께서 거듭 사무엘을 부르셨다. 세 번째였다. 그는 일어나 엘리에게 가서 말했다. “저, 여기 왔습니다. 제사장님이 저를 부르셨지요.” 그제서야 엘리는 여호와께서 이 소년을 부르고 계신 것을 알아챘다.	And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
9	엘리는 사무엘에게 말했다. “가서 누워라. 혹시 누가 너를 부르거든, 이렇게 대답해라. ‘말씀하십시오, 여호와여! 주님의 종인 제가 듣고 있습니다.’” 사무엘은 가서 자기 자리에 누웠다.	Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10	여호와께서 오셔서 자리 잡고 서 계시더니, 지난 여러 번처럼 부르셨다. “사무엘아, 사무엘아!” 사무엘이 대답했다. “말씀하십시오. 주님의 종인 제가 듣고 있습니다.”	And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
11	여호와께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. “자, 내가 이스라엘에 일을 일으킬 것이다. 이를 듣는 사람마다 두 귀가 얼얼할 것이다.	And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
12	그날에 엘리에게, 내가 그의 집안에 대해 말했던 모든 것을 내가 이룰 것이다. 시작하고 끝낼 것이다.	In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
13	내가 그에게 알려 주었다. 그의 집안을 영원에 이르도록 심판하겠다고! 자기 자식들이 스스로 저주를 불러들이고 있다는 것을 알면서도, 그들을 꾸짖지 않은 잘못 때문이다.	For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
14	이러므로 내가 엘리 집안에 대하여 단호하게 말한다. 엘리 집안의 잘못은 제물로도 예물로도 끝까지 없어지게 하지 못할 것이다.”	And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
15	사무엘이 아침까지 누워 있다가 여호와의 집 문들을 열었다. 사무엘은 두려워 그 본 것을 엘리에게 알리지 못했다.	And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.
16	그때 엘리가 사무엘을 부르며 말했다. “사무엘아, 얘야!” 그가 대답했다. “저, 여기 있습니다.”	Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.
17	엘리가 물었다. “하나님이 너한테 하신 말씀이 무엇이냐? 부디 나에게 숨기지 마라. 하나님이 너한테 이렇게든 저렇게든 하고 싶은 대로 벌하시기 바란다, 하나님이 너한테 하신 말씀 가운데 무엇이라도 네가 나에게 숨긴다면!”	And he said, What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
18	사무엘이 그에게 모든 말씀을 알려 주고 하나도 숨기지 않았다. 그러자 그가 말했다. “그 하나님은 여호와이시다. 여호와 보시기에 좋은 일을 하실 것이다.”	And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth him good.
19	사무엘은 커 가고, 여호와는 그와 함께하셨다. 사무엘의 말 가운데 아무것도 땅에 떨어지지 않게 하셨다.	And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
20	단에서부터 브엘세바에 이르기까지 온 이스라엘은 사무엘이 여호와의 예언자로 정해졌다는 것을 알게 되었다.	And all Israel from Dan even to Beer–sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.
21	여호와께서 거듭 실로에 나타나셨다. 여호와께서 실로에 있는 사무엘에게 여호와의 말씀으로 자신을 드러내셨기 때문이다.	And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
