1	요르단 동쪽의 땅을 나누다 먹일 짐승이 르우벤 사람들과 갓 사람들에게는 많았다. 아주 엄청났다. 그들이 야셀 땅과 길르앗 땅을 보니, 그곳은 짐승을 풀어 먹이기에 좋은 곳이었다.	Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;
2	갓 사람들과 르우벤 사람들이 와서 모세와 엘르아살 제사장과 무리의 우두머리들에게 말했다.	The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,
3	“아다롯, 디본, 야셀, 니므라, 헤스본, 엘르알레, 스밤, 느보, 브온이 있습니다.	Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
4	이곳들은 여호와께서 이스라엘 무리 앞에서 쳐부수어 주신 땅입니다. 그런데 짐승을 풀어 먹이기에 좋은 땅이고, 우리에게는 짐승이 있습니다.”	Even the country which the Lord smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:
5	그들이 이어서 말했다. “우리가 어르신 눈에 든다면, 이 땅을 우리가 차지하게 해 주십시오. 우리는 요르단을 건너가고 싶지 않습니다.”	Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.
6	모세가 갓 사람들과 르우벤 사람들에게 대답했다. “형제들이 싸우러 나가는데 그대들은 여기에 자리 잡겠다는 것입니까?	And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
7	무슨 까닭으로 그대들은 이스라엘 사람들의 사기를 떨어뜨려, 여호와께서 그들에게 주신 땅으로 그들이 건너가지 못하게 하는 것입니까?	And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord hath given them?
8	내가 가데스바르네아에서 땅을 살펴보라고 그대들의 아버지들을 보냈을 때, 그들도 이렇게 했습니다.	Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh–barnea to see the land.
9	그들이 에스골 골짜기까지 올라가서 그 땅을 보고 왔지요. 그런데 이스라엘 사람들의 사기를 떨어뜨려 여호와께서 그들에게 주신 땅으로 가지 못하게 했습니다.	For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the Lord had given them.
10	그래서 그날 여호와께서 노여움으로 불타올라 굳게 다짐하며 말씀하셨지요.	And the Lord’s anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,
11	‘이집트에서 빠져나온 20세 이상 사람들은 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 주기로 내가 굳게 약속한 땅을 보지 못할 것이다. 그들이 나를 따르는 일에 있는 힘을 다하지 않았기 때문이다.	Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
12	다만 여분네의 아들 그나스 사람 갈렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아는 그렇지 않았다. 참으로 있는 힘을 다해 여호와를 따랐다.’	Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the Lord.
13	이스라엘을 향하여 여호와께서 노여움으로 불타오르셨어요. 그래서 여호와 보시기에 나쁜 짓을 저지른 세대 전체가 끝장날 때까지, 40년을 광야에서 떠돌아다니게 하셨지요.	And the Lord’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed.
14	그런데, 보세요, 죄를 지은 사람들의 자식으로서 그대들이 그대들의 아버지들 대신에 일어나서, 이스라엘을 향한 여호와의 분노가 다시 타오르게 하다니요!	And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the Lord toward Israel.
15	그대들이 여호와에게서 돌아선다면, 여호와께서 이스라엘을 계속 광야에 두실 것이고, 그대들은 이 온 백성에게 멸망을 불러들일 것입니다.”	For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
16	그들이 모세에게 나아와서 말했다. “우리가 여기에 세우려는 것은 우리 짐승들을 둘 여러 양 우리와 우리 아이들을 머물게 할 여러 도시입니다.	And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
17	우리는 서둘러 싸울 채비를 하고, 다른 이스라엘 사람들이 자리 잡을 곳에 이를 때까지 앞장서겠습니다. 우리 아이들은 튼튼한 도시들 안에 남겨 두려고 합니다. 이 땅의 주민들이 두렵기 때문입니다.	But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18	이스라엘 사람들이 저마다 나누어 받은 땅을 차지할 때까지는 우리가 집으로 돌아오지 않겠습니다.	We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
19	요르단 건너편 저 너머에서는 그들과 함께 땅을 나누어 받지 않겠습니다. 우리는 요르단 이쪽 곧 동쪽에서 땅을 나누어 받은 셈이니까요.”	For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
20	모세가 그들에게 말했다. “그대들이 그 말을 지켜 여호와 앞에서 싸우러 나갈 채비를 한다고 합시다.	And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the Lord to war,
21	그대들 가운데서 싸울 채비를 한 사람 모두가 여호와 앞에서 요르단을 건너가고, 마침내 여호와께서 자신의 원수들을 자신 앞에서 몰아내셨다고 합시다.	And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the Lord, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,
22	그래서 그 땅이 여호와 앞에 굴복했다고 합시다. 그런 뒤에 그대들이 돌아온다면, 그대들은 여호와와 이스라엘에게 책임질 일이 없고, 이 땅은 여호와 앞에서 그대들 차지가 될 것입니다.	And the land be subdued before the Lord: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the Lord.
23	그대들이 그렇게 하지 않으면, 보세요, 그대들은 여호와께 죄짓는 것입니다. 죗값을 치러야 한다는 점을 알아 두세요.	But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.
24	그대들의 아이들이 머물 여러 도시와 그대들의 양을 둘 여러 우리를 세우세요. 그대들 입으로 말한 대로 하세요.”	Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.
25	갓 사람들과 르우벤 사람들이 모세에게 대답했다. “우리는 어르신이 명령하신 대로 하겠습니다.	And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.
26	우리 아이들과 여자들과 짐승 떼와 집짐승은 모두 거기 길르앗의 여러 도시에 머물게 하겠습니다.	Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:
27	어르신의 종들인 우리는 모두 싸울 채비를 하고 여호와 앞에서 건너가서 싸우겠습니다. 어르신이 말씀하신 대로 하겠습니다.”	But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord saith.
28	모세는 이들의 일을 두고서 제사장 엘르아살에게 명령했다. 눈의 아들 여호수아와 이스라엘 사람들의 지파, 아버지 쪽 집안의 우두머리들에게도 명령했다.	So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
29	모세가 그들에게 명령했다. “갓 사람들과 르우벤 사람들이 여러분과 함께 요르단을 건너간다고 합시다. 그들 가운데서 싸울 채비를 한 사람이 모두 여호와 앞에서 그렇게 하여, 그 땅이 그대들 앞에 굴복한다고 합시다. 그러면 그들이 길르앗 땅을 차지하게 해 주세요.	And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the Lord, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:
30	그러나 그들이 싸울 채비를 하고 그대들과 함께 건너가지 않으면, 그들은 가나안 땅에서 여러분 가운데서 자리를 잡아야 합니다.”	But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.
31	갓 사람들과 르우벤 사람들이 대답했다. “여호와께서 우리에게 말씀하신 그대로 하겠습니다.	And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the Lord hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.
32	우리가 여호와 앞에서 싸울 채비를 하고 가나안 땅으로 건너가겠습니다. 우리가 나누어 받아 차지할 땅이 요르단 이쪽에 있게만 해 주십시오.”	We will pass over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.
33	모세가 갓 사람들, 르우벤 사람들, 요셉의 아들 므낫세 지파 절반에게 아모리 임금 시혼의 나라를 주었다. 바산 임금 옥의 나라도 주었다. 영토 안에 있는 여러 도시의 땅과 또 둘레에 있는 땅의 여러 도시를 주었다.	And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.
34	갓 사람들은 디본, 아다롯, 아로엘을 세웠다.	And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35	아다롯소반, 야셀, 욕브하도 세웠다.	And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,
36	벳니므라와 벳하란도 세웠다. 튼튼한 도시와 양의 우리를 여럿 세웠다.	And Beth–nimrah, and Beth–haran, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.
37	르우벤 사람들은 헤스본, 엘르알레, 기랴다임을 세웠다.	And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,
38	이름이 달라진 두 도시 느보와 바알므온도 세웠다. 십마도 세웠다. 그들은 자기들이 세운 여러 도시에 새 이름을 붙여 불렀다.	And Nebo, and Baal–meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.
39	므낫세의 아들 마길의 자손은 길르앗으로 가서 길르앗을 빼앗고, 그곳에 있는 아모리 사람들을 몰아냈다.	And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.
40	모세가 므낫세의 아들 마길에게 길르앗을 주자, 그는 거기에 살았다.	And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.
41	므낫세의 아들 야일은 가서 천막 마을들을 빼앗고서는 하봇야일이라고 불렀다.	And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth–jair.
42	노바흐는 가서 그낫과 그에 딸린 여러 마을을 빼앗고, 자신의 이름을 따라 그낫을 노바흐라고 불렀다.	And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
