1	세례자 요한이 선포하다 그즈음에 세례자 요한이 나타나 유대아의 광야에서 선포했다.	In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
2	그가 말했다. “회개하십시오! 하늘나라가 가까이 와 있습니다!”	And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3	이 요한은 하나님이 예언자 이사야를 통해 말씀하신 그 사람이다. 이런 말씀이었다. “광야에서 외치는 이의 소리이다. ‘너희는 닦으라, 주님의 길을. 곧게 만들어라, 주님 걸으실 좁은 길들을.’”	For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4	그런데 바로 그 요한은 낙타 털가죽으로 만든 옷을 입고 가죽띠를 허리에 두르고 있었다. 그의 음식은 메뚜기와 들벌꿀이었다.	And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5	그때에 예루살렘과 온 유대아와 요르단강 둘레 온 지역 사람들이 요한한테 나아갔다.	Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6	그리고 요르단강에서 그에게 세례를 받으며 자기들의 죄를 털어놓았다. ()	And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7	회개의 열매를 맺으라 바리새파와 사두개파 가운데서 많은 사람들이 자기에게 세례를 받으러 오는 것을 보고서 요한이 그들에게 말했다. “독사의 자식들아! 누가 당신들에게 경고하여 알려 주었소? 머지않아 닥칠 심판을 피해 달아나라고!	But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8	회개에 마땅한 열매를 맺으시오!	Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9	‘아브라함이 우리 조상이다.’라고 속으로라도 말할 생각조차 하지 마시오. 당신들에게 말합니다. 하나님은 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자손이 일어나게 하실 수 있소.	And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10	이미 도끼가 나무들 뿌리에 놓여 있소. 그러므로 어떤 나무든 좋은 열매를 맺지 않으면 찍어 내어 불에 던지실 것이오.” (; ; )	And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11	더 힘 있는 분이 오실 것이다 “나는, 당신들에게 세례를 줍니다, 물로요. 당신들이 회개하도록요. 하지만 내 뒤에 오시는 분은 나보다 더 힘이 있습니다. 나는 그분의 샌들을 들어 드릴 만하지도 못합니다. 그러나 그분은, 당신들에게 세례를 주실 것입니다, 성령과 불로요.	I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12	그분의 손에는 까부르는 갈퀴가 있습니다. 그분은 자신의 타작마당을 말끔하게 하실 것입니다. 알맹이는 광에 모아들이시고, 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 싹 태워 버리실 것입니다.” (; )	Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13	예수님이 세례받으시다 그때에 예수님이 갈릴래아로부터 요르단강의 요한한테 다다르셨다. 요한에게 세례를 받으시려는 것이었다.	Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14	요한은 예수님을 가로막으면서 말했다. “선생님께 세례받아야 하는 사람은 바로 저입니다. 그런데 선생님, 선생님이 저한테 오시다니요?”	But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15	예수님이 요한한테 대답하셨다. “내 뜻을 받아들이세요, 이제는! 이렇게 하여 의를 다 이루는 것이 우리에게 마땅하니까요.” 그때 비로소 요한이 예수님의 뜻을 받아들인다.	And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16	세례를 받으시고 예수님이 곧바로 물에서 솟아오르셨다. 그런데, 보라, 예수님께 하늘이 열렸다. 그리고 예수님이 보시니, 하나님의 성령님이 비둘기처럼 내려와 예수님 위로 오셨다.	And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17	또, 보라, 하늘에서 소리가 났다. 그 소리가 말했다. “이는 사랑하는 내 아들이다. 나는 그가 좋다.”	And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
