1	에스라가 율법책을 소리 내어 읽다 온 백성이 하나같이 ‘물의 성문’ 앞에 있는 광장에 모였다. 그들은 에스라 서기관에게 모세의 율법책을 가져오라고 했다. 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 지키라고 명령하신 율법이었다.	And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.
2	그러자 에스라 제사장이 무리 앞에 율법책을 가져왔다. 남자든 여자든 말귀를 알아들을 만한 사람은 다 나와 있었다. 일곱째 달 첫째 날이었다.	And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.
3	그는 ‘물의 성문’ 앞에 있는 광장에서 날이 밝을 때부터 한낮까지 그 두루마리 책을 소리 내어 읽었다. 남자와 여자와 알아들을 만한 사람들이 앞에 있었다. 온 백성이 율법책 읽는 것을 귀담아들었다.	And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.
4	에스라 서기관은 이 일에 쓰려고 만든 나무 강단에 서 있었다. 그의 곁으로 맛디댜, 세마, 아나야, 우리야, 힐기야, 마아세야가 오른쪽에 서 있었다. 왼쪽에는 브다야, 미사엘, 말기야, 하숨, 하스밧다나, 스가랴, 므술람이 서 있었다.	And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5	에스라는 온 백성이 보는 앞에서 두루마리 책을 펼쳤다. 그는 온 백성보다 높은 곳에 서 있었던 것이다. 그가 두루마리 책을 펼치자 온 백성이 일어섰다.	And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:
6	에스라는 크신 하나님 여호와를 찬양했고, 온 백성이 손을 들고 “아멘, 아멘!” 하고 대답했다. 또한 무릎 꿇고 얼굴이 땅에 닿도록 여호와께 엎드려 절했다.	And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7	예수아, 바니, 세레뱌, 야민, 악굽, 삽브대, 호디야, 마아세야, 글리다, 아사랴, 요사밧, 하난, 블라야와 같은 레위 사람들은 백성에게 율법을 깨우쳐 주었다. 백성은 자기 자리에 계속 서 있었다.	Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.
8	그들은 하나님의 율법책을 소리 내어 읽어서 들려주고는 바로바로 풀이해 주었다. 알아듣도록 해 준 것이다. 그래서 사람들은 읽어 주는 내용을 깨닫게 되었다.	So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
9	그때 느헤미야가 말했다. 그는 총독이었다. 제사장인 에스라 서기관, 그리고 백성을 깨우쳐 준 레위 사람들도 함께 있었다. 느헤미야가 온 백성에게 말했다. “오늘은 여호와 여러분의 하나님께 거룩한 날입니다. 슬퍼하거나 울지 마세요.” 온 백성이 율법의 말씀을 듣고 울고 있었던 것이다.	And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.
10	그가 그들에게 말했다. “가서 기름진 음식을 드세요. 달콤한 것을 마시세요. 미처 준비하지 못한 사람들에게 한 몫씩 나눠 주세요. 오늘은 우리 주님께 거룩한 날이니까요. 괴로워하지 마세요. 여호와 앞에서 기뻐하는 것이 여러분의 피난처입니다.”	Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
11	레위 사람들은 백성에게 조용히 하라고 하면서 말했다. “조용히 하세요. 오늘은 거룩합니다. 괴로워하지 마세요.”	So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.
12	백성은 모두 돌아가서 먹고 마시고 한 몫씩 나누어 주며, 크게 즐거워했다. 읽어 주어서 듣고 알게 된 말씀을 깨달았기 때문이다.	And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.
13	초막명절을 지키다 이튿날 온 백성의 아버지 쪽 집안 우두머리들, 제사장들과 레위 사람들이 에스라 서기관에게 모여들었다. 율법의 말씀을 공부하러 온 것이었다.	And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.
14	그러다 율법 안에 이런 내용이 적혀 있는 것을 찾아냈다. 그것은 여호와가 모세의 손을 통해 명령하셨던 것이다. 곧, 이스라엘 사람들은 일곱째 달 명절 때에 초막에서 지내야 한다는 것이었다.	And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:
15	그들의 모든 도시와 예루살렘에 들리도록 이런 명령을 전해야 한다는 것이었다. “산에 가서 올리브나무 가지, 알레포소나무 가지, 은매화 가지, 대추야자나무(종려나무) 가지, 잎이 많은 나뭇가지를 가져오세요. 적혀 있는 대로 초막을 만들도록요.”	And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.
16	그러자 백성이 나가서 가져왔다. 저마다 옥상 위나 마당이나 하나님의 집 뜰에 초막을 지었다. ‘물의 성문’ 앞 광장이나 ‘에브라임 성문’ 앞 광장에 짓기도 했다.	So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.
17	사로잡혀 갔다가 돌아온 무리가 모두 초막을 짓고 그 초막 안에서 지냈다. 눈의 아들 여호수아 때부터 그날까지 이스라엘 사람들이 그렇게 한 일은 없었다. 기쁨은 엄청났다.	And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness.
18	그는 하나님의 율법책을 소리 내어 읽어서 들려주었다. 첫날부터 마지막 날까지 날마다 그랬다. 그들은 7일간 명절을 지켰고, 8일째에는 법규에 따라 축제를 열었다.	Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.
