|---|---|---|
ἔστιν γὰρ ἀργυρίῳ τόπος ὅθεν γίνεται τόπος δὲ χρυσίῳ ὅθεν διηθεῖται | Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
σίδηρος μὲν γὰρ ἐκ γῆς γίνεται χαλκὸς δὲ ἴσα λίθῳ λατομεῖται | Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
τάξιν ἔθετο σκότει καὶ πᾶν πέρας αὐτὸς ἐξακριβάζεται λίθος σκοτία καὶ σκιὰ θανάτου | He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
διακοπὴ χειμάρρου ἀπὸ κονίας οἱ δὲ ἐπιλανθανόμενοι ὁδὸν δικαίαν ἠσθένησαν ἐκ βροτῶν | The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
γῆ ἐξ αὐτῆς ἐξελεύσεται ἄρτος ὑποκάτω αὐτῆς ἐστράφη ὡσεὶ πῦρ | As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
τόπος σαπφείρου οἱ λίθοι αὐτῆς καὶ χῶμα χρυσίον αὐτῷ | The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
τρίβος οὐκ ἔγνω αὐτὴν πετεινόν καὶ οὐ παρέβλεψεν αὐτὴν ὀφθαλμὸς γυπός | There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture’s eye hath not seen:
οὐκ ἐπάτησαν αὐτὴν υἱοὶ ἀλαζόνων οὐ παρῆλθεν ἐπ’ αὐτῆς λέων | The lion’s whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
ἐν ἀκροτόμῳ ἐξέτεινεν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ κατέστρεψεν δὲ ἐκ ῥιζῶν ὄρη | He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
δίνας δὲ ποταμῶν ἔρρηξεν πᾶν δὲ ἔντιμον εἶδέν μου ὁ ὀφθαλμός | He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
βάθη δὲ ποταμῶν ἀνεκάλυψεν ἔδειξεν δὲ ἑαυτοῦ δύναμιν εἰς φῶς | He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.
ἡ δὲ σοφία πόθεν εὑρέθη ποῖος δὲ τόπος ἐστὶν τῆς ἐπιστήμης | But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
οὐκ οἶδεν βροτὸς ὁδὸν αὐτῆς οὐδὲ μὴ εὑρεθῇ ἐν ἀνθρώποις | Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
ἄβυσσος εἶπεν οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἐμοί καὶ θάλασσα εἶπεν οὐκ ἔστιν μετ’ ἐμοῦ | The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
οὐ δώσει συγκλεισμὸν ἀντ’ αὐτῆς καὶ οὐ σταθήσεται ἀργύριον ἀντάλλαγμα αὐτῆς | It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
καὶ οὐ συμβασταχθήσεται χρυσίῳ Ωφιρ ἐν ὄνυχι τιμίῳ καὶ σαπφείρῳ | It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
οὐκ ἰσωθήσεται αὐτῇ χρυσίον καὶ ὕαλος καὶ τὸ ἄλλαγμα αὐτῆς σκεύη χρυσᾶ | The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
μετέωρα καὶ γαβις οὐ μνησθήσεται καὶ ἕλκυσον σοφίαν ὑπὲρ τὰ ἐσώτατα | No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
οὐκ ἰσωθήσεται αὐτῇ τοπάζιον Αἰθιοπίας χρυσίῳ καθαρῷ οὐ συμβασταχθήσεται | The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
ἡ δὲ σοφία πόθεν εὑρέθη ποῖος δὲ τόπος ἐστὶν τῆς συνέσεως | Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
λέληθεν πάντα ἄνθρωπον καὶ ἀπὸ πετεινῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐκρύβη | Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
ἡ ἀπώλεια καὶ ὁ θάνατος εἶπαν ἀκηκόαμεν δὲ αὐτῆς τὸ κλέος | Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
ὁ θεὸς εὖ συνέστησεν αὐτῆς τὴν ὁδόν αὐτὸς δὲ οἶδεν τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς | God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
αὐτὸς γὰρ τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν πᾶσαν ἐφορᾷ εἰδὼς τὰ ἐν τῇ γῇ πάντα ἃ ἐποίησεν | For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
ἀνέμων σταθμὸν ὕδατός τε μέτρα | To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
ὅτε ἐποίησεν οὕτως ὑετὸν ἠρίθμησεν καὶ ὁδὸν ἐν τινάγματι φωνάς | When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
τότε εἶδεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἐξηγήσατο αὐτήν ἑτοιμάσας ἐξιχνίασεν | Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
εἶπεν δὲ ἀνθρώπῳ ἰδοὺ ἡ θεοσέβειά ἐστιν σοφία τὸ δὲ ἀπέχεσθαι ἀπὸ κακῶν ἐστιν ἐπιστήμη | And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
