1 남쪽에 거하던 가나안 족속 아랏 왕이 이스라엘이 정탐꾼들의 길로 왔다는 말을 듣고 이스라엘과 싸워 그들 중에서 몇 사람을 죄수로 사로잡으니라. And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.
2 이스라엘이 주께 서원하여 이르되, 주께서 만일 이 백성을 내 손에 넘겨주시면 내가 그들의 도시들을 진멸하리이다, 하매 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
3 주께서 이스라엘의 목소리를 들으시고 가나안 족속을 넘겨주시니 그들이 저들과 저들의 도시들을 진멸하니라. 그가 그곳의 이름을 호르마라 하니라. And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.
4 ¶그들이 호르 산에서 이동하여 홍해 길로 에돔 땅을 돌아가려 하였으나 그 길로 인해 백성의 혼이 심히 낙담하여 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
5 백성이 하나님과 모세를 대적하며 말하되, 어찌하여 당신들이 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 올라와 광야에서 죽게 하느냐? 거기에는 빵도 없고 물도 없도다. 우리 혼이 이 푸석푸석한 빵을 싫어하노라, 하매 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
6 주께서 불 뱀들을 백성 가운데로 보내어 백성을 물게 하시므로 이스라엘의 많은 사람이 죽으니라. And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
7 ¶그러므로 백성이 모세에게 나아와 이르되, 우리가 주와 당신을 대적하여 말함으로 죄를 지었사오니 주께 기도하여 그분께서 이 뱀들을 우리에게서 제거하게 하소서, 하매 모세가 백성을 위하여 기도하니 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
8 주께서 모세에게 이르시되, 너를 위해 불 뱀을 만들어 장대 위에 달라. 물린 자마다 그것을 쳐다보면 살리라, 하시니라. And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
9 모세가 놋 뱀을 만들어 장대 위에 다니 뱀이 어떤 사람을 물었을 때 그가 그 놋 뱀을 쳐다보면 살더라. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
10 ¶이스라엘 자손이 앞으로 나아가 오봇에 진을 쳤고 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.
11 오봇에서 이동하여 모압 앞 해 뜨는 편 광야의 이예아바림에 진을 치니라. And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije–abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.
12 ¶그들이 거기서 움직여 사렛 골짜기에 진을 쳤고 From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.
13 또 거기서 움직여 아모리 족속의 지경에서 나오는 광야에 있는 아르논의 다른 쪽에 진을 쳤으니 이는 아르논이 모압과 아모리 족속 사이에서 모압의 경계이기 때문이라. From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
14 그러므로 주의 전쟁의 책에 일렀으되, 그가 홍해와 아르논의 시내에서 행하였고 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,
15 아르의 거처로 내려가는 시내들의 개울에서와 모압의 경계에 놓인 곳에서 행하였도다, 하였더라. And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab.
16 그들이 거기서 브엘로 갔는데 그것은 주께서 모세에게 말씀하시기를, 백성을 함께 모으라. 내가 그들에게 물을 주리라, 하시던 우물이니라. And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.
17 ¶그때에 이스라엘이 이 노래를 부르되, 오 우물아, 솟아나라. 너희는 우물에게 노래하라. Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:
18 이 우물은 통치자들이 팠고 백성의 고귀한 자들이 법을 주는 자의 지시에 따라 자기들의 막대기로 그것을 팠도다, 하였더라. 그들이 광야에서 떠나 맛다나에 이르렀으며 The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:
19 맛다나에서 나할리엘에 이르렀고 나할리엘에서 바못에 이르렀으며 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:
20 모압 지방의 골짜기에 있는 바못에서 여시몬을 내려다보는 비스가의 꼭대기에 이르렀더라. And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.
21 ¶이스라엘이 아모리 족속의 왕 시혼에게 사자들을 보내어 이르되, And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
22 내가 당신의 땅을 지나가게 하소서. 우리가 밭에든지 포도원에든지 들어가지 아니하며 우물물도 마시지 아니하고 당신의 지경을 통과할 때까지 왕의 큰길로만 가리이다, 하였으나 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king’s high way, until we be past thy borders.
23 시혼이 이스라엘이 자기의 지경을 지나가는 것을 허락하지 아니하고 자기의 온 백성을 함께 모아 이스라엘을 치려고 광야로 나와서 야하스에 이르러 이스라엘과 싸우므로 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
24 이스라엘이 칼날로 그를 치고 아르논에서부터 얍복에 이르기까지 곧 암몬 자손에게 이르기까지 그의 땅을 소유하였으니 이는 암몬 자손의 경계가 강하였기 때문이더라. And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
25 이스라엘이 이 모든 도시를 점령하고 아모리 족속의 모든 도시 곧 헤스본과 그것의 모든 마을에 거하였더라. And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.
26 헤스본은 아모리 족속의 왕 시혼의 도시더라. 그가 모압의 이전 왕과 싸워 아르논에까지 이르는 그의 온 땅을 그의 손에서 빼앗았더라. For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.
27 그러므로 격언으로 말하는 자들이 이르되, 헤스본으로 올지어다. 시혼의 도시를 세워 예비할지어다. Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:
28 헤스본에서 불이 나오고 시혼의 도시에서 화염이 나와서 모압의 아르를 소멸시키며 아르논의 산당들의 귀족들을 소멸시켰도다. For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.
29 모압아, 네게 화가 있으리로다! 오 그모스의 백성아, 네가 망하게 되었도다. 그가 도망한 자기의 아들딸들을 내주어 아모리 족속의 왕 시혼의 포로가 되게 하였도다. Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.
30 우리가 그들을 쏘아서 디본에 이르기까지 헤스본을 멸하였고 메드바에 닿는 노바에 이르기까지 그들을 피폐하게 하였도다, 하였더라. We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.
31 ¶이와 같이 이스라엘이 아모리 족속의 땅에 거하였더라. Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
32 또 모세가 사람을 보내어 야셀을 정탐하게 하매 그들이 그것의 마을들을 점령하고 거기 있던 아모리 족속을 몰아내었더라. And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.
33 ¶또 그들이 돌이켜 바산의 길로 올라가매 바산 왕 옥이 자기의 온 백성과 함께 나와서 그들을 맞아 에드레이에서 싸우려 하더라. And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
34 주께서 모세에게 이르시되, 그를 두려워하지 말라. 내가 그와 그의 온 백성과 그의 땅을 네 손에 넘겨주었나니 너는 헤스본에 거하던 아모리 족속의 왕 시혼에게 행한 것 같이 그에게 행할지니라, 하시매 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
35 이처럼 그들이 그와 그의 아들들과 그의 온 백성을 쳐서 마침내 한 사람도 그에게 살아남지 아니하게 하고 그의 땅을 소유하였더라. So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
