1 그때에 첫째 달에 이스라엘 자손 곧 온 회중이 신 사막에 이르러 백성이 가데스에 거하였으며 미리암이 거기서 죽어 거기 묻히니라. Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
2 회중을 위한 물이 없었으므로 그들이 함께 모여 모세와 아론을 대적하니라. And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
3 백성이 모세와 다투어 말하며 이르되, 우리 형제들이 주 앞에서 죽을 때에 우리도 죽었더라면 좋을 뻔하였도다! And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the Lord!
4 너희가 어찌하여 주의 회중을 이 광야로 데리고 들어와 우리와 우리 짐승이 거기에서 죽게 하느냐? And why have ye brought up the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
5 너희가 어찌하여 우리를 이집트에서 나오게 하고 이 악한 곳으로 데려왔느냐? 이곳에는 씨도 없고 무화과도 없고 포도도 없고 석류도 없고 또한 마실 물도 없도다, 하니라. And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
6 모세와 아론이 집회의 앞을 떠나 회중의 성막 문에 이르러 얼굴을 대고 엎드리매 주의 영광이 그들에게 나타나니라. And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them.
7 ¶주께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되, And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
8 너는 막대기를 가지고 네 형 아론과 더불어 집회를 함께 모으고 너희는 그들의 눈앞에서 반석에게 말하라. 그리하면 그것이 자기 물을 내리니 너는 그 반석에서 나오는 물을 그들에게 주어 회중과 그들의 짐승이 마시게 할지니라, 하시니 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
9 모세가 그분께서 자기에게 명령하신 대로 주 앞에서 막대기를 취하니라. And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him.
10 모세와 아론이 반석 앞으로 회중을 함께 모으고 그가 그들에게 이르되, 너희 반역자들아, 이제 들으라. 우리가 너희를 위하여 이 반석에서 물을 내야만 하랴? 하고 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11 모세가 손을 들어 그 막대기로 반석을 두 번 치매 물이 풍성히 솟아 나오므로 회중과 그들의 짐승이 마시니라. And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
12 ¶주께서 모세와 아론에게 이르시되, 너희가 나를 믿지 아니하고 이스라엘 자손의 눈에서 나를 거룩히 구별하지 아니하였나니 그러므로 너희는 이 회중을 내가 그들에게 준 땅으로 데리고 들어가지 못하리라, 하시니라. And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
13 이스라엘 자손이 주와 다투었고 그분께서 그들 가운데서 거룩히 구별되셨으므로 이것은 므리바의 물이니라. This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.
14 ¶모세가 가데스에서 에돔 왕에게 사자들을 보내며 이르되, 당신의 형제 이스라엘이 이같이 말하기를, 우리가 당한 모든 고난을 당신도 아시거니와 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:
15 우리 조상들이 이집트로 내려갔으므로 우리가 이집트에 오랫동안 거하였으며 이집트 사람들이 우리와 우리 조상들을 괴롭게 하므로 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
16 우리가 주께 부르짖으매 그분께서 우리의 목소리를 들으시고 한 천사를 보내사 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 나오셨나이다. 보소서, 우리가 당신의 경계 맨 끝에 있는 도시 가데스에 있사오니 And when we cried unto the Lord, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
17 원하건대 우리가 당신의 지역을 지나가게 하소서. 우리가 밭이나 포도원을 지나가지 아니하고 우물물도 마시지 아니하며 우리가 왕의 큰길로만 가고 당신의 경계를 지나갈 때까지 오른쪽으로나 왼쪽으로나 치우치지 아니하리이다, 하나이다, 하였더니 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
18 에돔이 그에게 이르되, 너는 내 옆으로 지나가지 못하리라. 내가 나가서 칼로 너를 대적할까 염려하노라, 하매 And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
19 이스라엘 자손이 그에게 이르되, 우리가 큰길로 지나갈 것이며 나와 내 가축이 당신의 물을 마시면 내가 그 값을 드리리이다. 내가 내 발로 걸어서 지나갈 뿐인즉 아무 일도 하지 아니하리이다, 하였으나 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
20 그가 이르되, 너는 지나가지 못하리라, 하고 에돔이 많은 백성을 거느리고 나와서 강한 손으로 그를 막으니라. And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
21 에돔이 이같이 이스라엘이 자기 경계를 통과하는 것을 거부하였으므로 이스라엘이 그에게서 돌이키니라. Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
22 ¶이스라엘 자손 곧 온 회중이 가데스에서 이동하여 호르 산에 이르렀더니 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.
23 주께서 에돔 땅의 지경 옆의 호르 산에서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하시니라. 이르시되, And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,
24 너희가 므리바의 물에서 내 말을 거역하였으므로 아론은 자기 백성에게로 거두어지리니 그는 내가 이스라엘 자손에게 준 땅에 들어가지 못하리라. Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.
25 아론과 그의 아들 엘르아살을 데리고 호르 산에 올라가 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:
26 아론에게서 그의 의복들을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아살에게 입히라. 아론은 거기서 죽어 자기 백성에게로 거두어지리라, 하시니라. And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.
27 모세가 주께서 명령하신 대로 행하고 그들이 온 회중의 눈앞에서 호르 산에 오르니라. And Moses did as the Lord commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
28 모세가 아론에게서 그의 의복들을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아살에게 입히매 아론이 거기서 그 산의 꼭대기에서 죽으니라. 모세와 엘르아살이 산에서 내려오니 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
29 온 회중 곧 이스라엘의 온 집이 아론이 죽은 것을 보고 아론을 위해 삼십 일 동안 애곡하였더라. And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
