1 이스라엘 자손이 앞으로 나아가 여리고 옆 요르단 이편의 모압 평야에 진을 치니라. And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.
2 ¶십볼의 아들 발락이 이스라엘이 아모리 족속에게 행한 모든 것을 보았더라. And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3 모압이 백성을 심히 두려워하였으니 이는 그들이 많았기 때문이더라. 모압이 이스라엘 자손으로 인해 고민하며 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
4 미디안의 장로들에게 이르되, 이제 소가 들의 풀을 핥아먹듯이 이 무리가 우리 주변의 모든 것을 핥아먹으리로다, 하였더라. 그때에 십볼의 아들 발락이 모압 족속의 왕이더라. And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
5 그러므로 그가 브올의 아들 발람에게 사자들을 보내되 자기 백성의 자손들의 땅에 속한 강 옆의 브돌로 보내어 그를 부르게 하고 이르되, 보라, 이집트에서 나온 한 백성이 있는데, 보라, 그들이 지면을 덮고 내 맞은편에 거하노라. He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:
6 내게는 그들이 너무 강하니 그러므로 이제 원하건대 와서 나를 위해 이 백성을 저주하라. 혹시 내가 우세하면 우리가 그들을 쳐서 이 땅에서 몰아내리라. 그대가 축복하는 자는 복을 받고 그대가 저주하는 자는 저주를 받는 줄을 내가 아노라, 하니라. Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
7 모압의 장로들과 미디안의 장로들이 점치는 대가를 손에 들고 떠나서 발람에게 이르러 발락의 말을 그에게 전하매 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.
8 그가 그들에게 이르되, 이 밤을 여기에서 지내라. 주께서 내게 말씀하시는 대로 내가 너희에게 말을 다시 전하리라, 하니 모압의 통치자들이 발람과 함께 머무니라. And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
9 하나님께서 발람에게 오셔서 이르시되, 너와 함께 있는 이들은 어떤 사람들이냐? 하시니 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?
10 발람이 하나님께 아뢰되, 모압 왕 십볼의 아들 발락이 내게 사람을 보내어 이르기를, And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
11 보라, 이집트에서 나온 한 백성이 있는데 그들이 지면을 덮었은즉 이제 와서 나를 위해 그들을 저주하라. 혹시 내가 그들을 이기고 그들을 몰아낼 수 있으리라, 하나이다, 하매 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
12 하나님께서 발람에게 이르시되, 너는 그들과 함께 가지 말고 그 백성을 저주하지도 말라. 그들은 복 받은 자들이니라, 하시니라. And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.
13 발람이 아침에 일어나 발락의 통치자들에게 이르되, 너희는 너희 땅으로 돌아가라. 주께서 내가 너희와 함께 가는 것을 거절하시느니라, 하니 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the Lord refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
14 모압의 통치자들이 일어나 발락에게로 가서 이르되, 발람이 우리와 함께 오기를 거절하나이다, 하니라. And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
15 ¶발락이 여전히 그들보다 존귀한 통치자들을 다시 더 많이 보내거늘 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.
16 그들이 발람에게로 가서 그에게 이르되, 십볼의 아들 발락이 이같이 말씀하시느니라. 원하건대 그대는 아무것도 거리끼지 말고 내게로 오라. And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
17 내가 그대를 높여 심히 큰 존귀에 이르게 하고 그대가 내게 말하는 것은 무엇이든지 행하리니 그러므로 원하건대 와서 나를 위해 이 백성을 저주하라, 하매 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
18 발람이 발락의 신하들에게 응답하여 이르되, 발락이 자기 집을 은금으로 가득히 채워 내게 줄지라도 내가 능히 주 내 하나님의 말씀을 넘어서서 적든 많든 할 수 없노라. And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.
19 그런즉 이제 청하건대 너희도 이 밤에 여기서 묵으라. 주께서 내게 무슨 말씀을 더 하실지 내가 알아보리라, 하더라. Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the Lord will say unto me more.
20 밤에 하나님께서 발람에게 오사 그에게 이르시되, 그 사람들이 너를 부르러 오거든 일어나 그들과 함께 가라. 그러나 너는 오직 내가 네게 이르는 말만 할지니라, 하시니 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.
21 발람이 아침에 일어나 나귀에 안장을 얹고 모압의 통치자들과 함께 가니라. And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22 ¶그가 간 것으로 인하여 하나님의 분노가 타올라 주의 천사가 대적이 되어 그를 치려고 길에 서니라. 이제 그는 자기 나귀를 탔고 그의 두 종은 그와 함께 있었는데 And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
23 나귀가 주의 천사가 칼을 빼어 손에 들고 길에 선 것을 보고 길에서 떠나 밭으로 들어가므로 발람이 나귀를 길로 돌이키려고 때리니라. And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
24 그러나 주의 천사는 포도원 길에 섰고 이편과 저편에는 담이 있더라. But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
25 나귀가 주의 천사를 보고는 몸을 담에 대고 발람의 발을 담에다 짓누르매 그가 다시 나귀를 때리니 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
26 주의 천사가 더 가서 오른쪽으로나 왼쪽으로나 돌이킬 길이 없는 좁은 곳에 서니라. And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
27 나귀가 주의 천사를 보고 발람의 밑에 엎드리니 발람이 분노하여 자기 지팡이로 나귀를 때리더라. And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.
28 주께서 나귀의 입을 여시니 나귀가 발람에게 이르되, 내가 주인에게 무슨 일을 하였기에 주인이 나를 이같이 세 번이나 때리시나이까? 하매 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
29 발람이 나귀에게 이르되, 네가 나를 조롱하였기 때문이니 내 손에 칼이 있었더라면 이제 내가 너를 죽였으리라. And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
30 나귀가 발람에게 이르되, 나는 주인의 소유가 된 이후로 이 날까지 주인께서 타시던 주인의 나귀가 아니니이까? 내가 지금까지 주인에게 이와 같이 행하는 버릇이 있었나이까? 하매 그가 이르되, 없었느니라, 하더라. And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.
31 그때에 주께서 발람의 눈을 여시매 그가 주의 천사가 칼을 빼어 손에 들고 길에 선 것을 보고는 머리를 숙이고 얼굴을 대고 납작 엎드리니라. Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
32 주의 천사가 그에게 이르되, 네가 어찌하여 네 나귀를 이같이 세 번이나 때렸느냐? 보라, 네 길이 내 앞에서 비뚤어졌으므로 내가 너를 막으려고 나왔는데 And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
33 나귀가 나를 보고 이같이 세 번을 돌이켜 내 앞에서 피하였느니라. 만일 나귀가 돌이켜 나를 피하지 아니하였더라면 분명히 내가 벌써 너를 죽이고 나귀는 살렸으리라, 하매 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.
34 발람이 주의 천사에게 아뢰되, 당신이 나를 막으려고 길에 서신 줄을 알지 못하였으므로 내가 죄를 지었나이다. 그런즉 이제 당신이 그 일을 기뻐하지 아니하시면 내가 돌아가겠나이다, 하니 And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
35 주의 천사가 발람에게 이르되, 그 사람들과 함께 가라. 그러나 너는 오직 내가 네게 이르는 말만 할지니라, 하매 이에 발람이 발락의 통치자들과 함께 가니라. And the angel of the Lord said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 ¶발람이 왔다는 말을 듣고 발락이 나가서 맨 끝 지경 곧 아르논의 경계에 있는 모압의 도시에까지 가서 그를 맞이하고 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
37 발람에게 이르되, 내가 그대에게 사람을 보내어 간절히 그대를 부르지 아니하였느냐? 어찌하여 그대가 내게 오지 아니하였느냐? 내가 참으로 그대를 높여 존귀에 이르게 하지 못하겠느냐? 하니 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
38 발람이 발락에게 이르되, 보소서, 내가 당신에게 오기는 하였으나 이제 무엇을 말할 능력이 내게 있으리이까? 하나님께서 내 입에 주시는 말씀만을 내가 말하리이다, 하니라. And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
39 발람이 발락과 함께 가서 기럇후솟에 이르매 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath–huzoth.
40 발락이 소와 양을 드리고 발람과 또 그와 함께한 통치자들에게 보내니라. And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
41 다음 날 발락이 발람을 데려다가 그를 바알의 산당들로 인도하매 그가 거기서 백성의 끝 부분을 바라보니라. And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
