1	하느님의 선민 이스라엘 나는 그리스도의 사람으로서 진실을 말하고 거짓을 말하지 않습니다. 성령으로 움직이는 내 양심도 그것이 사실이라고 말해 줍니다.	I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2	나에게는 큰 슬픔이 있습니다. 그리고 마음으로 끊임없이 번민하고 있습니다.	That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3	나는 혈육을 같이하는 내 동족을 위해서라면 나 자신이 저주를 받아 그리스도에게서 떨어져 나갈지라도 조금도 한이 없겠습니다.	For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
4	나의 동족은 이스라엘 사람들입니다. 그들에게는 하느님의 자녀가 되는 특권이 있고 하느님을 모시는 영광이 있고 하느님과 맺은 계약이 있습니다. 그리고 그들에게는 율법이 있고 참된 예배가 있고 하느님의 약속이 있습니다.	Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
5	그들은 저 훌륭한 선조들의 후손들이며 그리스도도 인성으로 말하면 그들에게서 나셨습니다. 만물을 다스리시는 하느님을 영원토록 찬양합시다. 아멘.	Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6	나는 하느님의 약속이 실패로 돌아갔다는 말을 하려는 것은 아닙니다. 이스라엘 사람이라 해서 다 이스라엘 사람은 아니며	Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7	아브라함의 후예라 하여 모두 아브라함의 자녀는 아닌 것입니다. "이사악의 혈통을 이은 자만이 네 자녀라 불리리라." 하시지 않았습니까?	Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8	이 말씀은 육정의 자녀는 하느님의 자녀가 아니고 오직 약속의 자녀만이 하느님의 자녀로 인정받는다는 뜻입니다.	That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9	그 약속이라는 것은 "내년 이 즈음에 내가 올 터인데 그 때 사라에게 아들이 있을 것이다." 하신 말씀입니다.	For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
10	뿐만 아니라 리브가가 우리 조상 이사악과의 사이에서 한번에 두 아들을 잉태했을 때의 경우도 마찬가지입니다.	And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11	—	(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12	그 아들들이 아직 태어나지도 않았고, 따라서 선이나 악을 행하기도 전에 하느님께서는 리브가에게 "형이 동생을 섬기게 될 것이다." 하고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 사람의 선행을 보시고 불러주시는 것이 아니라 당신의 뜻대로 불러주시며 선택의 원리에 의해서 당신의 계획을 이루십니다.	It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13	그것은 "나는 야곱을 사랑하고 에사오는 미워하였다."고 기록된 성서의 말씀대로입니다.	As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14	그렇다고 하느님이 공정하지 못하다고 말할 수 있겠습니까? 절대로 그럴 수 없습니다.	What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15	하느님께서 모세에게 "나는 자비를 베풀고 싶은 사람에게 자비를 베풀고 동정하고 싶은 사람을 동정한다." 하고 말씀하셨듯이	For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16	하느님의 선택을 받고 안 받는 것은 인간의 의지나 노력에 달려 있는 것이 아니라 오직 하느님의 자비에 달려 있는 것입니다.	So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17	성서에는 하느님께서 파라오에게 "내가 너를 왕으로 내세운 것은 너를 시켜서 내 힘을 드러내고 내 이름이 온 세상에 널리 알려지게 하려는 것이다." 하신 말씀이 있습니다.	For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18	이렇게 하느님께서는 당신의 뜻대로 어떤 사람에게는 자비를 베푸시고 또 어떤 사람은 완고하게도 하십니다.	Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19	하느님의 진노와 자비 "그렇다면 어찌하여 하느님께서 사람을 책망하십니까? 누가 능히 하느님의 뜻을 거역할 수 있겠습니까?" 하고 말할 사람도 있을 것입니다.	Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20	그러나 사람이 무엇이기에 감히 하느님께 따지고 드는 것입니까? 만들어진 물건이 만든 사람한테 "왜 나를 이렇게 만들었소?" 하고 말할 수 있겠습니까?	Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21	옹기장이가 같은 진흙덩이를 가지고 하나는 귀하게 쓸 그릇을 만들고 하나는 천하게 쓸 그릇을 만들어낼 권리가 없겠습니까?	Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22	하느님께서는 당신의 진노와 권능을 나타내시기를 원하시면서도 당장 부수어버려야 할 진노의 그릇을 부수지 않으시고 오랫동안 참아주셨습니다.	What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23	그것은 하느님께서 자비의 그릇에 베푸실 당신의 영광이 얼마나 풍성한지를 보여주시려는 것이었습니다. 그 자비의 그릇은 후에 영광을 주시려고 하느님께서 미리 만드신 것인데	And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24	그 자비의 그릇은 바로 우리들입니다. 하느님께서 불러주신 우리들 가운데는 유다인뿐 아니라 이방인도 있습니다.	Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25	호세아서에 이런 말씀이 있습니다. "내 백성이 아니었던 사람들을 내 백성이라 부르겠고 내 사랑을 받지 못하던 백성을 내 사랑하는 백성이라 부르리라.	As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26	'너희는 내 백성이 아니다.' 하고 말씀하신 바로 그 곳에서 그들은 살아 계신 하느님의 자녀라고 불리리라."	And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27	그리고 이사야는 이스라엘에 관해서 이렇게 외쳤습니다. "이스라엘 자손들이 바다의 모래처럼 많을지라도 남은 자만이 구원을 얻으리라.	Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
28	주께서는 약속하신 말씀을 신속히 그리고 엄격히 이 세상에서 다 이루시리라."	For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
29	또 이사야는 이렇게 예언했습니다. "전능하신 주께서 우리에게 씨를 남겨주시지 않았던들 우리는 소돔처럼 되었을 것이요, 고모라와 같이 되었으리라."	And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
30	이스라엘의 잘못 그러면 어떻게 생각해야 하겠습니까? 하느님과 올바른 관계를 추구하지 않던 이방인이 오히려 그 올바른 관계를 얻었습니다. 그것은 믿음으로써 이루어진 것입니다.	What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31	그런데 이스라엘은 하느님과 올바른 관계를 가지는 법을 추구하였지만 끝내 그 법을 찾지 못했습니다.	But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32	왜 그렇게 되었습니까? 그들은 믿음을 통해서 얻으려 하지 않고 공로를 쌓음으로써 얻으려고 했기 때문입니다. 이를테면 그들은 그 걸림돌에 걸려 넘어진 것입니다.	Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33	성서에, "자, 이제 내가 걸림돌 하나를 시온에 놓으리니 사람들이 걸려 넘어질 바윗돌이라. 그러나 그를 믿는 사람은 수치를 당하지 않으리라." 하신 말씀대로입니다.	As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
