| 1 | 我等が神の子等と稱せられ、且然あらん為に父の我等に賜ひし愛の如何なるかを看よ。世の我等を知らざるは、彼を知り奉らざるが故なり。 | Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. |
| 2 | 至愛なる者よ、我等は今實に神の子等たり、然れど其如何に成るべきかは未顕れず、我等は其顕れん時、我等が神に似奉るべきを知れり、其は之を有の儘に見奉るべければなり。 | Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. |
| 3 | 総て此希望を有する人は、尚彼も潔く在すが如く、己を潔からしむ。 | And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. |
| 4 | 総て罪を犯す人は律法を犯す、即ち罪は律法を犯す事なり。 | Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. |
| 5 | 又イエズスの顕れ給ひしは我等の罪を除かん為にして、彼に聊の罪なき事は汝等の知る所なり。 | And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. |
| 6 | 総て彼に止る者は罪を犯さず、総て罪を犯す人は彼を見奉りし事なく彼を識り奉る事なし。 | Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. |
| 7 | 小子よ、誰にも惑はさるる事勿れ、義を為す者は義人なり、猶彼が義人にて在すがごとし。 | Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. |
| 8 | 罪を為す者は惡魔よりの者なり、其は惡魔は初より罪を為す者なればなり。神の御子の顕れ給ひしは、惡魔の業を亡ぼし給はん為なり。 | He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. |
| 9 | 総て神によりて生れ奉りし人は罪を為さず、其は御種之に存すればなり。又罪を為す能はず、其は神によりて生れ奉りたればなり。 | Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. |
| 10 | 神の子等と惡魔の子等とは、是に於て乎明に顕る、即ち総て義を為さざる人は神よりの者に非ず、兄弟を愛せざる人も亦然り、 | In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. |
| 11 | 其は互に相愛せよとは汝等が初より聞きし告なればなり。 | For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. |
| 12 | カインの如く為すべからず、彼は惡しきものより[の人]にして弟を絞殺ししが、之を絞殺ししは何故ぞ、己が業は惡くして弟の業は正しかりし故なり。 | Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. |
| 13 | 兄弟等よ、世の汝等を憎むを怪しむ事勿れ、 | Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. |
| 14 | 我等は兄弟を愛するによりて死より生命に移されたるを知れり、愛せざる人は死に止る。 | We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. |
| 15 | 総て己が兄弟を憎む人は人殺者なり、総て人殺者は永遠の生命の其身に止る事なきは汝等の知る所なり。 | Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. |
| 16 | 我等が愛を覚りたるは、キリストが我等の為に生命を棄て給ひしを以てなり、我等も亦兄弟の為に生命を棄つべし。 | Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
| 17 | 此世の財産を有てるもの、兄弟の窮乏せるを見つつ、之に己が腸を閉ぢなば、争でか神に對する愛の之に止る事を得んや。 | But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? |
| 18 | 我小子よ、我等は言と舌とを以て愛すべからず、行と眞とを以てすべし。 | My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. |
| 19 | 之を以て我等が自ら眞理によれる事を知る、又御前に於て我心を勧めん、 | And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. |
| 20 | 蓋我等の心我等を咎むるも、神は我等の心より偉大に在して萬事を知り給ふなり。 | For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. |
| 21 | 至愛なる者よ、若我等の心我等を咎めずば、神の御前に於て憚る所なし、 | Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. |
| 22 | 又何事を願ふも之を賜はるなり、其は神の掟を守りて御意に適ふことを行へばなり。 | And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. |
| 23 | 斯て其掟は、即ち御子イエズス、キリストの御名を信じ奉り、且其我等に命じ給ひし如く互に相愛すべき事是なり。 | And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. |
| 24 | 神の掟を守る人は神に止り奉り、神も亦是に止り給ふ。我等が神の我等に止り給ふ事を知るは、其我等に賜ひし[聖]霊によりてなり。 | And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. |
