| 1 | 人ありて監督の務を欲するは善き業を欲するなりとは眞の談なり、 | This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. |
| 2 | 然れば監督は、咎むべき所なく、唯一婦の夫たり、謹慎、怜悧、端正、貞潔にして旅人を接待し、善く教を施し、 | A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; |
| 3 | 酒を嗜まず、人を打たず、柔和にして争はず、利を貪らず、 | Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; |
| 4 | 善く其家を治め、其子女の謹みて之に服從する人たらざるべからず。 | One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; |
| 5 | 人若己が家を治むるを知らずば、如何にしてか神の教會に奮励せん。 | (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) |
| 6 | 監督は新信徒たるべからず、恐くは驕りて惡魔に等しき審判に陥らん。 | Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. |
| 7 | 又外の人々に好評ある人たるべし、是耻辱と惡魔の罠とに陥らざらん為なり。 | Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. |
| 8 | 執事等も斯の如く、尊くして兩舌ならず、酒を嗜まず、耻づべき利を貪らず、 | Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; |
| 9 | 潔き良心を以て信仰の奥義を保てる者たるべし。 | Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. |
| 10 | 彼等も先試を受けて、咎むべき所なくば務むべきなり。 | And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. |
| 11 | 婦人等も斯の如く、尊くして譏らず、節制して萬事に忠實なる者たるべし。 | Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. |
| 12 | 執事等は、一婦の夫にして善く其子女と家とを治むる者たるべし、 | Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. |
| 13 | 其は善く務めたる者は善き階級を得て、キリスト、イエズスに於る信仰に就きて大いなる勇氣を得べければなり。 | For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. |
| 14 | 我早く汝に至らん事を望みつつ是等の事を書遣るは、 | These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: |
| 15 | 若遅からん時、汝をして神の家に於て如何に行ふべきかを知らしめん為なり、神の家とは活き給へる神の教會なり、眞理の柱にして且基なり。 | But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. |
| 16 | 實にも大いなる哉敬虔の奥義、即ち[キリストは]肉に於て顕はされ、霊によりて證せられ、天使等に顕れ、異邦人に傳へられ、世に信ぜられ、光榮に上げられ給ひしなり。 | And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. |
