1 そこでヨブは答えて言った、 Then Job answered and said,
2 「あなたがたはいつまでわたしを悩まし、言葉をもってわたしを打ち砕くのか。 How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
3 あなたがたはすでに十度もわたしをはずかしめ、わたしを悪くあしらってもなお恥じないのか。 These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.
4 たといわたしが、まことにあやまったとしても、そのあやまちは、わたし自身にとどまる。 And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.
5 もしあなたがたが、まことにわたしに向かって高ぶり、わたしの恥を論じるならば、 If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:
6 『神がわたしをしえたげ、その網でわたしを囲まれたのだ』と知るべきだ。 Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net.
7 見よ、わたしが『暴虐』と叫んでも答えられず、助けを呼び求めても、さばきはない。 Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
8 彼はわたしの道にかきをめぐらして、越えることのできないようにし、わたしの行く道に暗やみを置かれた。 He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.
9 彼はわたしの栄えをわたしからはぎ取り、わたしのこうべから冠を奪い、 He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
10 四方からわたしを取りこわして、うせさせ、わたしの望みを木のように抜き去り、 He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
11 わたしに向かって怒りを燃やし、わたしを敵のひとりのように思われた。 He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies.
12 その軍勢がいっせいに来て、塁を築いて攻め寄せ、わたしの天幕のまわりに陣を張った。 His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle.
13 彼はわたしの兄弟たちをわたしから遠く離れさせられた。わたしを知る人々は全くわたしに疎遠になった。 He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me.
14 わたしの親類および親しい友はわたしを見捨て、 My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
15 わたしの家に宿る者はわたしを忘れ、わたしのはしためらはわたしを他人のように思い、わたしは彼らの目に他国人となった。 They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.
16 わたしがしもべを呼んでも、彼は答えず、わたしは口をもって彼に請わなければならない。 I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
17 わたしの息はわが妻にいとわれ、わたしは同じ腹の子たちにきらわれる。 My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children’s sake of mine own body.
18 わらべたちさえもわたしを侮り、わたしが起き上がれば、わたしをあざける。 Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me.
19 親しい人々は皆わたしをいみきらい、わたしの愛した人々はわたしにそむいた。 All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.
20 わたしの骨は皮と肉につき、わたしはわずかに歯の皮をもってのがれた。 My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
21 わが友よ、わたしをあわれめ、わたしをあわれめ、神のみ手がわたしを打ったからである。 Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
22 あなたがたは、なにゆえ神のようにわたしを責め、わたしの肉をもって満足しないのか。 Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
23 どうか、わたしの言葉が、書きとめられるように。どうか、わたしの言葉が、書物にしるされるように。 Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
24 鉄の筆と鉛とをもって、ながく岩に刻みつけられるように。 That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
25 わたしは知る、わたしをあがなう者は生きておられる、後の日に彼は必ず地の上に立たれる。 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26 わたしの皮がこのように滅ぼされたのち、わたしは肉を離れて神を見るであろう。 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27 しかもわたしの味方として見るであろう。わたしの見る者はこれ以外のものではない。わたしの心はこれを望んでこがれる。 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
28 あなたがたがもし『われわれはどうして彼を責めようか』と言い、また『事の根源は彼のうちに見いだされる』と言うならば、 But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
29 つるぎを恐れよ、怒りはつるぎの罰をきたらすからだ。これによって、あなたがたは、さばきのあることを知るであろう」。 Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.
