1 ですから，わたしたちは，キリストについての初歩的な原理は後にして，完成へと押し進むことにし，次のような基礎を再び据えることはやめましょう。すなわち，死んだ業からの悔い改め，神に対する信仰， Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2 数々のバプテスマについての教え，手を置くこと，死んだ者たちの復活，そして永遠の裁きなどに関することです。 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3 神が許してくださるなら，わたしたちはこのことを行なうでしょう。 And this will we do, if God permit.
4 というのは，いったん啓発を受け，天からの贈り物を味わい，聖霊にあずかる者となり， For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 神の良い言葉と来たるべき世の力を味わっておきながら， And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 その後で離れ落ちる者たちについては，彼らを再び悔い改めに立ち返らせるのは不可能なのです。神の子を自分たちで再びはりつけにして，彼を公の恥辱にさらしているからです。 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
7 というのは，土地が，その上にたびたび降って来る雨を吸い込み，それを耕している人たちに役立つ作物を生み出すなら，神からの祝福を受けますが， For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
8 イバラやアザミを生じるなら，それは退けられ，のろいに近づいており，その終わりには焼かれてしまいます。 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
9 しかし，愛する者たちよ，わたしたちはこのように語ってはいても，あなた方については，もっと良い事柄，また救いに伴う事柄があると確信しています。 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
10 というのは，神は不義な方ではないので，あなた方の業や，あなた方が聖徒たちに仕え，また今も仕えていることによってみ名に示した愛の骨折りとを忘れることはされないからです。 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
11 わたしたちは，あなた方ひとりひとりが，終わりに至るまで十分な希望を保つため，その同じ勤勉さを示して欲しいと思います。 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
12 それは，あなた方が不活発になったりせず，約束を信仰と忍耐とによって受け継ぐ人たちの模倣者となるためです。 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
13 神はアブラハムに約束されたとき，ご自分より偉大な者にかけて誓うことができなかったので，ご自身にかけて誓い， For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
14 「わたしは必ずあなたを祝福し，必ずあなたを殖やすだろう」と言われたのです。 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
15 こうしてアブラハムは，辛抱強く耐え忍んだのち，約束のものを獲得しました。 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
16 というのは，実際，人間たちは自分より偉大な者にかけて誓うのであって，その誓いは確証となってあらゆる論争に決着をつけます。 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
17 このように神は，約束の相続人たちにご自分の考えの不変性をさらに豊かに示そうと決めると，誓いによって介入されたのです。 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
18 それは，自分の前に置かれた希望をつかもうとして避難所に逃れて来たわたしたちが，神が偽ることのできない二つの不変の事柄によって，力強い励ましを得るためでした。 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19 その希望を，わたしたちは魂の錨，確実でしっかりした希望，また垂れ幕の内側に入って行くものとして持っています。 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
20 そこへは先駆者であるイエスがわたしたちのために入り，永久にメルキゼデクの位に等しい大祭司となられたのです。 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
