| 1 | 愛する者たちよ，すべての霊を信じてはなりません。むしろ，その霊が神に属するものかどうかを試しなさい。多くの偽預言者が世に出ているからです。 | Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. |
| 2 | あなた方はこれによって神に属する霊を知っています。すなわち，イエス・キリストが肉体において来られたことを告白する霊はすべて神に属しています。 | Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: |
| 3 | そして，イエス・キリストが肉体において来られたことを告白しない霊はすべて神に属していません。しかもこれは反キリストの霊であり，それが来ることをあなた方が聞いていた者です。今やそれはすでに世にいるのです。 | And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. |
| 4 | 小さな子供たちよ，あなた方は神に属しており，彼らに打ち勝ったのです。あなた方の内にいる方は，世の内にいる者より大いなる方だからです。 | Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. |
| 5 | 彼らは世に属しています。それゆえに彼らは世について語り，世は彼らの言うことを聞きます。 | They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. |
| 6 | わたしたちは神に属しています。神を知っている者はわたしたちに耳を傾けます。神に属していない者はわたしたちに耳を傾けません。これによって，わたしたちは真理の霊と迷いの霊を知っています。 | We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. |
| 7 | 愛する者たちよ，わたしたちは互いに愛し合おうではありませんか。愛は神に属しているからです。そして，愛する者はみな神から生まれており，神を知っています。 | Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. |
| 8 | 愛さない者は神を知っていません。神は愛だからです。 | He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. |
| 9 | 神の愛はこれによってわたしたちの内に示されました。すなわち，神はそのひとり子を世に遣わして，わたしたちが彼を通して生きるようにしてくださったことです。 | In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. |
| 10 | 愛は，わたしたちが神を愛したことにあるのではなく，その方がわたしたちを愛し，ご自分のみ子をわたしたちの罪のための贖いの犠牲として遣わしてくださったことにあるのです。 | Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. |
| 11 | 愛する者たちよ，神がこのようにわたしたちを愛してくださったのであれば，わたしたちも互いに愛し合うべきです。 | Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. |
| 12 | いまだ神を見た者はいません。わたしたちが互いに愛し合うなら，神はわたしたちの内にとどまってくださり，その愛がわたしたちの内に全うされているのです。 | No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. |
| 13 | わたしたちはこれによって，わたしたちがその方の内にとどまっており，その方がわたしたちの内にとどまっておられることを知っているのです。すなわち，その方がわたしたちにご自分の霊を与えてくださったことによってです。 | Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. |
| 14 | わたしたちは，父がみ子を世の救い主として遣わされたことを見たので，証言しています。 | And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. |
| 15 | イエスが神の子であることを告白する者はだれでも，神はその人の内にとどまっておられ，その人も神の内にとどまっています。 | Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. |
| 16 | わたしたちは，神がわたしたちのために抱いておられる愛を知っており，信じています。神は愛であり，愛の内にとどまる者は神の内にとどまっており，神もその人の内にとどまっておられます。 | And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. |
| 17 | このことにおいて，愛はわたしたちの間に全うされているのです。すなわち，わたしたちが裁きの日に大胆さを抱くことができるようにすることです。この世でのわたしたちは，彼がそうであるのと全く同じようだからです。 | Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. |
| 18 | 愛には恐れがなく，完全な愛はわたしたちの恐れを投げ捨てます。恐れには処罰が伴うからです。恐れる者は愛の内に全うされていません。 | There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. |
| 19 | わたしたちが神を愛しているのは，その方がまずわたしたちを愛してくださったからです。 | We love him, because he first loved us. |
| 20 | 「わたしは神を愛している」と言いながら自分の兄弟を憎むなら，その人は偽り者です。というのは，見たことのある自分の兄弟を愛していない者が，どうして見たことのない神を愛することができるでしょうか。 | If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? |
| 21 | 神を愛している者は自分の兄弟をも愛するべきであるという，このおきてをわたしたちは彼から受けているのです。 | And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. |
