| 1 | 父がどれほど大きな愛をわたしたちに与えて，わたしたちが神の子供と呼ばれるようにしてくださったかを見なさい。この理由で世はわたしたちを知っていません。世は彼を知っていないからです。 | Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. |
| 2 | 愛する者たちよ，あなた方は今や神の子供ですが，わたしたちが何になるのかはまだ明らかにされていません。しかし，彼が現わされると，わたしたちが彼のようになることは知っています。わたしたちは彼のありのままの姿を見ることになるからです。 | Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. |

| 7 | 小さな子供たちよ，だれにも惑わされてはなりません。義を行なう者は，彼が義なる方であるのと同じように，義なる者です。 | Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. |
| 8 | 罪を犯す者は悪魔に属しています。悪魔ははじめから罪を犯してきたからです。このことが終わるために，神の子は現われたのです。それは，彼が悪魔の業をうち砕くためです。 | He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. |
| 9 | 神から生まれた者は罪を犯しません。その方の種がこの人の内にとどまっているからです。そして，この人は罪を犯すことができません。この人が神から生まれたからです。 | Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. |
| 10 | このことにおいて，神の子らと悪魔の子らは明らかです。義を行なわない者はみな，神に属していません。自分の兄弟を愛さない者も同様です。 | In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. |
| 11 | というのは，わたしたちが互いに愛し合うべきこと，これがあなた方がはじめから聞いていた音信だからです。 | For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. |
| 12 | カインのようであってはなりません。彼は悪い者に属していて，自分の兄弟を殺しました。なぜ殺したのですか。自分の業が悪く，自分の兄弟の業が正しかったからです。 | Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. |
| 13 | わたしの兄弟たち，世があなた方を憎むとしても驚いてはなりません。 | Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. |
| 14 | わたしたちは，自分たちが兄弟たちを愛しているので，死から命へと移ったことを知っています。自分の兄弟を愛さない者は死の内にとどまっています。 | We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. |
| 15 | だれでも自分の兄弟を憎む者は人殺しであり，あなた方は人殺しはだれも自分の内に永遠の命をとどめていないことを知っています。 | Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. |
| 16 | これによって，わたしたちは愛を知っています。彼がわたしたちのために自分の命を捨ててくださったからです。それで，わたしたちも自分の兄弟たちのために自分の命を捨てるべきです。 | Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
| 17 | しかし，世の資産がありながら，窮乏にある自分の兄弟を見て，その者に対する同情の気持ちを閉ざすなら，どうして神の愛がその人の内にとどまるでしょう。 | But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? |
| 18 | わたしの小さな子供たちよ，言葉や舌だけによらず，行ないと真実とによって愛そうではありませんか。 | My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. |
| 19 | そして，これによってわたしたちは，自分が真理に属していることを知っており，その方の前で自分の心を説得しています。 | And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. |
| 20 | 自分の心がわたしたちを罪に定めても，神はわたしたちの心よりも大いなる方であって，すべての事を知っておられるからです。 | For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. |
| 21 | 愛する者たちよ，自分の心がわたしたちを罪に定めないなら，わたしたちは神に対して大胆さを抱き， | Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. |
| 22 | わたしたちが求めることは何でも，その方から受けます。わたしたちがその方のおきてを守り，その方の目に喜ばれる事柄を行なっているからです。 | And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. |
| 23 | これがその方のおきてです。すなわち，わたしたちがその方のみ子イエス・キリストの名を信じ，彼がわたしたちに命じられたとおり，互いに愛し合うべきことです。 | And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. |
| 24 | その方のおきてを守っている者はその方の内にとどまっており，その方はその人の内にとどまっています。これによってわたしたちは，その方がわたしたちに与えてくださった霊により，その方がわたしたちの内にとどまっていることを知ります。 | And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. |
