| 1 | こうした事ののち，イエスはガリラヤで歩いていた。ユダヤ人たちが彼を殺そうとしていたので，ユダヤで歩こうとはしなかったからである。 | After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. |
| 2 | さて，ユダヤ人の仮小屋の祭りが近づいていた。 | Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. |
| 3 | それでその兄弟たちは彼に言った，「ここを去ってユダヤに行きなさい。あなたの行なう業を弟子たちも見ることができるようにするためだ。 | His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. |
| 4 | 物事をこっそりと行ないながら，自分が公に知られることを求める者はいないからだ。こうした事柄を行なっているのなら，自分を世に示しなさい」。 | For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. |
| 5 | というのは，その兄弟たちでさえ彼を信じていなかったからである。 | For neither did his brethren believe in him. |
| 6 | それでイエスは彼らに言った，「わたしの時はまだ来ていないが，あなた方の時はいつでも用意ができている。 | Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. |
| 7 | 世はあなた方を憎むことはできないが，わたしを憎む。わたしが世について，その業が悪いことを証言するからだ。 | The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. |
| 8 | あなた方は祭りに上って行くがよい。わたしはまだこの祭りに上って行かない。わたしの時はまだ満ちていないからだ」 。 | Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. |
| 9 | 彼らにこうした事柄を言って，彼はガリラヤにとどまった。 | When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee. |
| 10 | しかし，その兄弟たちが祭りに上って行ってから，彼自身も，おおっぴらにではなくひそかに上って行った。 | But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. |
| 11 | そこでユダヤ人たちは祭りで彼を探して，「彼はどこだ」と言った。 | Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he? |
| 12 | 群衆の間では彼に関するささやきが多くあった。ある者は「彼は善い人だ」と言った。他の者たちは「そうではない。彼は群衆を惑わしているのだ」と言っていた。 | And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. |

| 14 | しかし，すでに祭りの半ばになった時，イエスは神殿に上って来て教えた。 | Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. |
| 15 | それでユダヤ人たちは驚嘆して言った，「この人は教育されたことがないのに，どうして文字を知っているのか」。 | And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? |
| 16 | それでイエスは彼らに答えた，「わたしの教えはわたしのものではなく，わたしを遣わされた方のものだ。 | Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. |
| 17 | だれでもその方のご意志を行ないたいと思うなら，わたしの教えについて，それが神からのものなのか，それともわたしが自分から話しているのかが分かるはずだ。 | If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. |
| 18 | 自分から話す者は自分の栄光を求める。しかし，自分を遣わした方の栄光を求める者は真実な者であって，その人の内には不正がない。 | He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. |
| 19 | モーセはあなた方に律法を与えなかっただろうか。それなのに，あなた方のうちのだれも律法を守っていない。あなた方はなぜわたしを殺そうとしているのか」 。 | Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? |
| 20 | 群衆は答えた，「あなたは悪魔に取りつかれている！ だれがあなたを殺そうとしているのか」。 | The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? |
| 21 | イエスは彼らに答えた，「わたしが一つの業を行なうと，あなた方はみなそれによって驚嘆する。 | Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. |
| 22 | モーセはあなた方に割礼を与えた（モーセからではなく，父祖たちからなのだが）。それで，あなた方は安息日にも男の子に割礼を施している。 | Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. |
| 23 | モーセの律法を破らないようにするため，男の子は安息日に割礼を受けるというのに，安息日に人の全身をいやしたからといってわたしに対して腹を立てるのか。 | If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? |
| 24 | うわべによって裁かずに，公正な裁きで裁きなさい」 。 | Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. |
| 25 | それでエルサレムの住民の何人かが言った，「これは彼らが殺そうとしている人ではないか。 | Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? |
| 26 | 見よ，彼がおおっぴらに話しているのに，彼らはこの人に何も言わない。支配者たちはこの人が本当にキリストだと確かに分かったのだろうか。 | But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? |
| 27 | だが，我々はこの人がどこから来たかを知っている。キリストが来られる時には，彼がどこから来たのかだれも知らないはずだ」。 | Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. |
| 28 | それでイエスは，神殿で大声を上げ，教えて言った，「あなた方はわたしを知っており，わたしがどこから来たかを知っている。わたしは自分の考えで来たのではなく，わたしを遣わされた方は真実な方だ。あなた方はその方を知っていない。 | Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. |
| 29 | わたしはその方を知っている。わたしはその方のもとから来ており，その方がわたしを遣わされたからだ」 。 | But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. |
| 30 | そのため，彼らは彼を捕まえようとした。しかし，だれも彼に手をかけるものはいなかった。彼の時はまだ来ていなかったからである。 | Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. |
| 31 | しかし，群衆の多くが彼を信じた。彼らは言った，「キリストが来られる時にも，この人がしたよりも多くのしるしは行なわないのではないだろうか」。 | And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done? |
| 32 | ファリサイ人たちは，群衆が彼に関してこれらの事をささやいているのを聞いた。それで，祭司長たちとファリサイ人たちは，彼を逮捕するために役人たちを遣わした。 | The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. |
| 33 | するとイエスは言った，「ほんの少しの間，わたしはあなた方と共にいる。それから，わたしを遣わした方のもとへ行く。 | Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. |
| 34 | あなた方はわたしを探すが，見つけることができない。そして，わたしのいる所にあなた方は来ることができない」 。 | Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. |
| 35 | それでユダヤ人たちは互いに言い合った，「我々の見つけることができないとは，いったいどこに行こうとしているのだろう。ギリシャ人の間の離散者のところに行って，ギリシャ人に教えようとしているのだろうか。 | Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? |
| 36 | 『あなた方はわたしを探すが，見つけることができない。そして，わたしのいる所にあなた方は来ることができない』 と彼が言うこの言葉はどういうことなのだろう」。 | What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come? |
| 37 | さて，祭りの大いなる最後の日に，イエスは立ち上がり，叫んで言った，「だれでも渇く者がいれば，わたしのところに来て飲むように。 | In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. |
| 38 | わたしを信じる者は，聖書が述べているとおり，その人の内から生きた水の流れが流れ出るだろう」 。 | He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. |
| 39 | しかし，彼は，自分を信じる者たちが受けようとしていた霊について言ったのである。というのは，聖霊がまだ与えられていなかったからであり，それはイエスがまだ栄光を受けていなかったからであった。 | (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) |
| 40 | それで，群衆の多くはこれらの言葉を聞いた時，「この人は本当にあの預言者だ」と言った。 | Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. |
| 41 | ほかの者たちは「この人はキリストだ」と言った。しかし，ある者たちは言った，「まさかキリストがガリラヤから出るだろうか。 | Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? |
| 42 | 聖書は，キリストがダビデの子孫から，またダビデのいた村ベツレヘムから出ると述べていないだろうか」。 | Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? |
| 43 | そこで，彼のために群衆の中で分裂が生じた。 | So there was a division among the people because of him. |
| 44 | 彼らのうち何人かは彼を逮捕したいと思ったが，彼に手をかける者はいなかった。 | And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. |
| 45 | それで役人たちは，祭司長たちとファリサイ人たちのところへ戻ってきた。すると彼らは役人たちに言った，「なぜ彼を連れて来なかったのか」。 | Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? |
| 46 | 役人たちは答えた，「あの人のように話した人はいまだかつてありません」。 | The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. |
| 47 | それでファリサイ人たちは彼らに答えた，「あなた方も惑わされてしまったわけではあるまい。 | Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? |
| 48 | 支配者たちやファリサイ人たちの中に，彼を信じた者がいるだろうか。 | Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? |
| 49 | だが，律法を知らないこの群衆はのろわれているのだ」。 | But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. |
| 50 | ニコデモ（彼らの一員で，夜に彼のもとに来た者）が彼らに言った， | Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) |
| 51 | 「我々の律法は，まずその人から聞いて，その人が何をしているかを知っていなければ，人を裁くだろうか」。 | Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? |
| 52 | 彼らは彼に答えた，「あなたもガリラヤの出身なのか。調べてみよ。預言者がガリラヤからは生じないことが分かるだろう」。 | They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. |
| 53 | みんなは自分の家に帰った。 | And every man went unto his own house. |
