| 1 | さて，イエスがヘロデ王の時代にユダヤのベツレヘムで生まれた時，見よ，東方からの賢者たちがエルサレムに来て，こう言った。 | Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, |
| 2 | 「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方はどこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので，その方を拝むために来たのです」。 | Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. |
| 3 | それを聞いてヘロデ王は動揺し，彼と共に全エルサレムも動揺した。 | When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. |
| 4 | 彼は祭司長たちと民の律法学者たちとをすべて集め寄せ，キリストがどこで生まれることになっているのかを彼らに尋ねた。 | And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. |
| 5 | 彼らは彼に言った，「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者を通してこのように書かれているからです。 | And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet, |
| 6 | 『ユダの地のベツレヘムよ，あなたは決してユダの君主たちの間で最も小さいものではない。あなたから一人の統治者が出て，わたしの民イスラエルを牧するからだ』」。 | And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. |
| 7 | そこで，ヘロデは賢者たちをひそかに呼んで，星が現われた時期を詳しく聞き出した。 | Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. |
| 8 | 彼らをベツレヘムに遣わして言った，「行って，その幼子のことを念入りに調べよ。見つけたら，わたしに報告せよ。わたしも行って拝むためだ」。 | And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. |
| 9 | 王の言葉を聞いてから，彼らは出かけて行った。すると見よ，東方で見た星が彼らの先を行き，ついに幼子のいる場所の上にやって来て，止まった。 | When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. |

| 11 | 家の中に入ると，その母マリアと共にいる幼子を見，ひれ伏して彼を拝んだ。自分たちの宝箱を開いて，金と乳香と没薬を贈り物としてささげた。 | And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. |
| 12 | 夢でヘロデのもとに戻らないよう告げられたので，別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。 | And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. |
| 13 | さて，彼らが去って行くと，見よ，主のみ使いが夢の中でヨセフに現われて，こう言った。「起きて，幼子とその母を連れてエジプトに逃げ，わたしが告げるまではそこにとどまりなさい。ヘロデがこの幼子を探し出して滅ぼそうとしているからだ」。 | And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. |
| 14 | 彼は起きて，夜のうちに幼子とその母を連れてエジプトに去って行った。 | When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: |
| 15 | そしてヘロデが死ぬまでそこにいた。それは，預言者を通して主によって語られたことが果たされるためであった。こう言われていた。「エジプトから，わたしは自分の子を呼び出した」。 | And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. |
| 16 | それからヘロデは，賢者たちにだまされたことを知って非常に腹を立て，人を遣わして，賢者たちから詳しく聞き出した時期に基づき，ベツレヘムとその周囲の全地域にいる二歳以下の男の子をすべて殺させた。 | Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. |
| 17 | その時，預言者エレミヤによって語られたことが果たされた。こう言われていた。 | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, |
| 18 | 「ラマで声が聞こえた，泣いて，大いに悲しむ悲嘆の声が。ラケルは自分の子供たちのために泣き，慰めてもらおうとしない。彼らがもういないからだ」。 | In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. |
| 19 | しかし，ヘロデが死ぬと，見よ，主のみ使いがエジプトにいるヨセフに夢の中で現われて，こう言った。 | But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, |
| 20 | 「起きて，幼子とその母を連れてイスラエルの地に入りなさい。幼子の命を求めていた者たちは死んだからだ」。 | Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life. |
| 21 | 彼は起きて，幼子とその母を連れてイスラエルの地に入った。 | And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. |
| 22 | しかしアルケラオスがその父ヘロデの代わりにユダを治めていると聞き，そこに行くのを恐れた。夢の中で告げられて，ガリラヤ地方に退いた。 | But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: |
| 23 | そして，ナザレと呼ばれる町に来て住んだ。預言者たちを通して，「彼はナザレ人と呼ばれるだろう」と語られたことが果たされるためであった。 | And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. |
