| 1 | そのころ，バプテスマを施す人ヨハネが現われ，ユダヤの荒野で宣教して言った， | In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, |
| 2 | 「悔い改めなさい。天の王国は近づいたからだ！」 | And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. |
| 3 | この者は，預言者イザヤによって語られた者だったのである。こう言われていた。 「荒野で叫ぶ者の声がする，主の道を整えよ，その道筋をまっすぐにせよ」。 | For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. |
| 4 | ところで，このヨハネはラクダの毛で作った衣を身に着け，皮の帯を腰に巻いており，イナゴと野みつを食べていた。 | And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. |
| 5 | その時，エルサレムとユダヤ全土とヨルダン周辺の全地方の人々が彼のところに出て来た。 | Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, |
| 6 | 人々は自分の罪を告白して，ヨルダンで彼からバプテスマを受けていた。 | And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. |
| 7 | しかし，ファリサイ人たちやサドカイ人たちの多くが彼の施すバプテスマに来るのを見た時，彼は彼らに言った，「マムシらの子孫よ，来ようとしている憤りから逃れるようにと，だれがあなた方に告げたのか。 | But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? |
| 8 | それなら，悔い改めにふさわしい実を生み出しなさい！ | Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: |
| 9 | 『我々の父にアブラハムがいる』などと考えてはいけない。あなた方に告げるが，神はこれらの石からでもアブラハムに子孫を起こすことができるのだ。 | And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. |
| 10 | 「おのはすでに木々の根もとに置かれている。だから，良い実を生み出さない木はみな切り倒されて，火の中に投げ込まれるのだ。 | And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |
| 11 | わたしは確かに，悔い改めのためにあなた方に水でバプテスマを施しているが，わたしの後に来る方はわたしより強力だ。わたしはその方の履物を脱がすにも値しない。その方は，あなた方に聖霊でバプテスマを施すだろう。 | I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: |
| 12 | ふるい分けるフォークがその手にあり，その脱穀場をすっかりきれいにする。その小麦を倉に集め，もみ殻のほうは消すことのできない火で焼き尽くすだろう」。 | Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. |
| 13 | その時，イエスはガリラヤからヨルダンに，ヨハネのところに来た。彼からバプテスマを受けるためである。 | Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. |
| 14 | しかしヨハネは，イエスをとどめようとして言った，「わたしこそあなたからバプテスマを受ける必要があるのに，あなたのほうがわたしのところに来られるのですか」。 | But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? |
| 15 | しかしイエスは答えて彼に言った，「今はそうさせてもらいたい。このようにしてすべての義を果たすのは，わたしたちにとってふさわしいことなのだ」 。そこで彼はイエスの言うとおりにさせた。 | And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. |
| 16 | イエスはバプテスマを受けると，すぐに水から上がった。すると見よ，天が彼のために開いた。彼は，神の霊がハトのように自分の上に下って来るのを目にした。 | And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: |
| 17 | 見よ，天から出た声が言った，「これはわたしの愛する子，わたしの心にかなう者である」。 | And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. |
