| 1 | 『人もし監督の職を慕はば、これよき業を願ふなり』とは、信ずべき言なり。 | This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. |
| 2 | それ監督は責むべき所なく、一人の妻の夫にして、自ら制し、愼み、品行 正しく、旅人を懇ろに待し、能く教へ、 | A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; |
| 3 | 酒を嗜まず、人を打たず、寛容にし、爭はず、金を貪らず、 | Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; |
| 4 | 善く己が家を理め、謹嚴にして子女を從順ならしむる者たるべし。 | One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; |
| 5 | （人もし己が家を理むることを知らずば、爭でが神の教會を扱ふことを得ん） | (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) |
| 6 | また新に教に入りし者ならざるべし、恐らくは傲慢になりて惡魔と同じ審判を受くるに至らん。 | Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. |
| 7 | 外の人にも令聞ある者たるべし、然らずば誹謗と惡魔の羂とに陷らん。 | Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. |
| 8 | 執事もまた同じく謹嚴にして、言を二つにせず、大酒せず、恥づべき利をとらず、 | Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; |
| 9 | 潔き良心をもて信仰の奧義を保つものたるべし。 | Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. |
| 10 | まづ彼らを試みて責むべき所なくば、執事の職に任ずべし。 | And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. |
| 11 | 女もまた謹嚴にして人を謗らず、自ら制して凡ての事に忠實なる者たるべし。 | Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. |
| 12 | 執事は一人の妻の夫にして、子女と己が家とを善く理むる者たるべし。 | Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. |
| 13 | 善く執事の職をなす者は良き地位を得、かつキリスト・イエスに於ける信仰につきて大なる勇氣を得るなり。 | For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. |
| 14 | われ速かに汝に往かんことを望めど、今これらの事を書きおくるは、 | These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: |
| 15 | 若し遲からんとき、人の如何に神の家に行ふべきかを汝に知らしめん爲なり。神の家は活ける神の教會なり、眞理の柱、眞理の基なり。 | But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. |
| 16 | 實に大なるかな、敬虔の奧義『キリストは肉にて顯され、靈にて義とせられ、御使たちに見られ、もろもろの國人に宣傳へられ、世に信ぜられ、榮光のうちに上げられ給へり』 | And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. |
