| 1 | されば愛する者よ、我らかかる約束を得たれば、肉と靈との汚穢より全く己を潔め、神を畏れてその清潔を成就すべし。 | Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. |
| 2 | 我らを受け容れよ、われら誰にも不義をなしし事なく、誰をも害ひし事なく、誰をも掠めし事なし。 | Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man. |
| 3 | わが斯く言ふは、汝らを咎めんとにあらず、そは我が既に言へる如く、汝らは我らの心にありて、共に死に共に生くればなり。 | I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you. |
| 4 | 我なんぢらを信ずること大なり、また汝 等をもて誇とすること大なり、我は慰安にみち、凡ての患難の中にも喜悦あふるるなり。 | Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation. |
| 5 | マケドニヤに到りしとき、我らの身はなほ聊かも平安を得ずして、樣々の患難に遭ひ、外には分爭、内には恐懼ありき。 | For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. |
| 6 | 然れど哀なる者を慰むる神は、テトスの來るによりて我らを慰め給へり。 | Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; |
| 7 | 唯その來るに因りてのみならず、彼が汝らによりて得たる慰安をもて慰め給へり。即ち汝らの我を慕ふこと、歎くこと、我に對して熱心なることを我らに告ぐるによりて、我ますます喜べり。 | And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more. |
| 8 | われ書をもて汝らを憂ひしめたれども悔いず、その書の汝らを暫く憂ひしめしを見て、前には悔いたれども今は喜ぶ。 | For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. |
| 9 | わが喜ぶは汝らの憂ひしが故にあらず、憂ひて悔改に至りし故なり。汝らは神に從ひて憂ひたれば、我等より聊かも損を受けざりき。 | Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. |
| 10 | それ神にしたがふ憂は、悔なきの救を得るの悔改を生じ、世の憂は死を生ず。 | For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. |
| 11 | 視よ、汝らが神に從ひて憂ひしことは、如何ばかりの奮勵・辯明・憤激・恐懼・愛慕・熱心・罪を責むる心などを汝らの中に生じたりしかを。汝 等かの事に就きては全く潔きことを表せり。 | For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. |
| 12 | されば前に書を汝らに書き贈りしも、不義をなしたる人の爲にあらず、また不義を受けたり人の爲にあらず、我らに對する汝らの奮勵の、神の前にて汝らに顯れん爲なり。 | Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you. |
| 13 | この故に我らは慰安を得たり。慰安を得たる上にテトスの喜悦によりて更に喜べり。そは彼の心なんぢら一同によりて安んぜられたればなり。 | Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. |
| 14 | われ曩に彼の前に汝らに就きて誇りたれど恥づることなし、我らが汝らに語りし事のみな誠實なりし如く、テトスの前に誇りし事もまた誠實となれり。 | For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth. |
| 15 | 彼は汝 等みな從順にして畏れ戰き、己を迎へしことを思ひ出して、心を汝らに寄すること増々 深し。 | And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. |
| 16 | われ凡ての事に汝らに就きて心 強きを喜ぶ。 | I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things. |
