|---|---|---|
Drinking too much makes you loud and foolish. It's stupid to get drunk. | Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Fear an angry king as you would a growling lion; making him angry is suicide. | The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
Any fool can start arguments; the honorable thing is to stay out of them. | It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
A farmer too lazy to plow his fields at the right time will have nothing to harvest. | The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
A person's thoughts are like water in a deep well, but someone with insight can draw them out. | Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Everyone talks about how loyal and faithful he is, but just try to find someone who really is! | Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
Children are fortunate if they have a father who is honest and does what is right. | The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
The king sits in judgment and knows evil when he sees it. | A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Can anyone really say that his conscience is clear, that he has gotten rid of his sin? | Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
The Lord hates people who use dishonest weights and measures. | Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.
Even children show what they are by what they do; you can tell if they are honest and good. | Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
The Lord has given us eyes to see with and ears to listen with. | The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.
If you spend your time sleeping, you will be poor. Keep busy and you will have plenty to eat. | Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
The customer always complains that the price is too high, but then he goes off and brags about the bargain he got. | It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
If you know what you are talking about, you have something more valuable than gold or jewels. | There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Anyone stupid enough to promise to be responsible for a stranger's debts ought to have their own property held to guarantee payment. | Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
What you get by dishonesty you may enjoy like the finest food, but sooner or later it will be like a mouthful of sand. | Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Get good advice and you will succeed; don't go charging into battle without a plan. | Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
A gossip can never keep a secret. Stay away from people who talk too much. | He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
If you curse your parents, your life will end like a lamp that goes out in the dark. | Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
The more easily you get your wealth, the less good it will do you. | An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
Don't take it on yourself to repay a wrong. Trust the Lord and he will make it right. | Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.
The Lord hates people who use dishonest scales and weights. | Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.
The Lord has determined our path; how then can anyone understand the direction his own life is taking? | Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?
Think carefully before you promise an offering to God. You might regret it later. | It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
A wise king will find out who is doing wrong, and will punish him without pity. | A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
The Lord gave us mind and conscience; we cannot hide from ourselves. | The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
A king will remain in power as long as his rule is honest, just, and fair. | Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
We admire the strength of youth and respect the gray hair of age. | The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
Sometimes it takes a painful experience to make us change our ways. | The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
