BOOK TWO / The Prayer of Someone in Exile
As a deer longs for a stream of cool water, so I long for you, O God.
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
2 I thirst for you, the living God. When can I go and worship in your presence? My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
3 Day and night I cry, and tears are my only food; all the time my enemies ask me, “Where is your God?” My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
4 My heart breaks when I remember the past, when I went with the crowds to the house of God and led them as they walked along, a happy crowd, singing and shouting praise to God. When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
5 Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
6 — O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
7 Here in exile my heart is breaking, and so I turn my thoughts to him. He has sent waves of sorrow over my soul; chaos roars at me like a flood, like waterfalls thundering down to the Jordan from Mount Hermon and Mount Mizar. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
8 May the Lord show his constant love during the day, so that I may have a song at night, a prayer to the God of my life. Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
9 To God, my defender, I say, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go on suffering from the cruelty of my enemies?” I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
10 I am crushed by their insults, as they keep on asking me, “Where is your God?” As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
11 Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
