The Widow's Offering Jesus looked around and saw rich people dropping their gifts in the Temple treasury,
And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. |
and he also saw a very poor widow dropping in two little copper coins. | And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
He said, “I tell you that this poor widow put in more than all the others. | And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
For the others offered their gifts from what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, gave all she had to live on.” (,; ,) | For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.
Jesus Speaks of the Destruction of the Temple Some of the disciples were talking about the Temple, how beautiful it looked with its fine stones and the gifts offered to God. Jesus said,
And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, |
“All this you see—the time will come when not a single stone here will be left in its place; every one will be thrown down.” (; ) | As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
Troubles and Persecutions “Teacher,” they asked, “when will this be? And what will happen in order to show that the time has come for it to take place?”
And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? |
Jesus said, “Watch out; don't be fooled. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time has come!’ But don't follow them. | And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.
Don't be afraid when you hear of wars and revolutions; such things must happen first, but they do not mean that the end is near.” | But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.
He went on to say, “Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. | Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
There will be terrible earthquakes, famines, and plagues everywhere; there will be strange and terrifying things coming from the sky. | And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
Before all these things take place, however, you will be arrested and persecuted; you will be handed over to be tried in synagogues and be put in prison; you will be brought before kings and rulers for my sake. | But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.
This will be your chance to tell the Good News. | And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
Make up your minds ahead of time not to worry about how you will defend yourselves, | Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:
because I will give you such words and wisdom that none of your enemies will be able to refute or contradict what you say. | For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.
You will be handed over by your parents, your brothers, your relatives, and your friends; and some of you will be put to death. | And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.
Everyone will hate you because of me. | And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.
But not a single hair from your heads will be lost. | But there shall not an hair of your head perish.
Stand firm, and you will save yourselves. (; ) | In your patience possess ye your souls.
Jesus Speaks of the Destruction of Jerusalem “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that it will soon be destroyed.
And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. |
Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills; those who are in the city must leave, and those who are out in the country must not go into the city. | Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.
For those will be ‘The Days of Punishment,’ to make come true all that the Scriptures say. | For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies! Terrible distress will come upon this land, and God's punishment will fall on this people. | But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
Some will be killed by the sword, and others will be taken as prisoners to all countries; and the heathen will trample over Jerusalem until their time is up. (; ) | And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
The Coming of the Son of Man “There will be strange things happening to the sun, the moon, and the stars. On earth whole countries will be in despair, afraid of the roar of the sea and the raging tides.
And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; |
People will faint from fear as they wait for what is coming over the whole earth, for the powers in space will be driven from their courses. | Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. | And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
When these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near.” (; ) | And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
The Lesson of the Fig Tree Then Jesus told them this parable: “Think of the fig tree and all the other trees.
And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; |
When you see their leaves beginning to appear, you know that summer is near. | When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.
In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that the Kingdom of God is about to come. | So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.
“Remember that all these things will take place before the people now living have all died. | Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. | Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
The Need to Watch “Be careful not to let yourselves become occupied with too much feasting and drinking and with the worries of this life, or that Day may suddenly catch you
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. |
like a trap. For it will come upon all people everywhere on earth. | For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
Be on watch and pray always that you will have the strength to go safely through all those things that will happen and to stand before the Son of Man.” | Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
Jesus spent those days teaching in the Temple, and when evening came, he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives. | And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.
Early each morning all the people went to the Temple to listen to him. | And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.
