The Question about Jesus' Authority One day when Jesus was in the Temple teaching the people and preaching the Good News, the chief priests and the teachers of the Law, together with the elders, came
And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, |
and said to him, “Tell us, what right do you have to do these things? Who gave you such right?” | And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
Jesus answered them, “Now let me ask you a question. Tell me, | And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
did John's right to baptize come from God or from human beings?” | The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
They started to argue among themselves, “What shall we say? If we say, ‘From God,’ he will say, ‘Why, then, did you not believe John?’ | And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
But if we say, ‘From human beings,’ this whole crowd here will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.” | But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
So they answered, “We don't know where it came from.” | And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you, then, by what right I do these things.” (; ) | And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
The Parable of the Tenants in the Vineyard Then Jesus told the people this parable: “There was once a man who planted a vineyard, rented it out to tenants, and then left home for a long time.
Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. |
When the time came to gather the grapes, he sent a slave to the tenants to receive from them his share of the harvest. But the tenants beat the slave and sent him back without a thing. | And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.
So he sent another slave; but the tenants beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him back without a thing. | And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
Then he sent a third slave; the tenants wounded him, too, and threw him out. | And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my own dear son; surely they will respect him!’ | Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another, ‘This is the owner's son. Let's kill him, and his property will be ours!’ | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. “What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to the tenants?” Jesus asked. | So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
“He will come and kill those men, and turn the vineyard over to other tenants.” When the people heard this, they said, “Surely not!” | He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.
Jesus looked at them and asked, “What, then, does this scripture mean? ‘The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all.’ | And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
Everyone who falls on that stone will be cut to pieces; and if that stone falls on someone, that person will be crushed to dust.” (; ) | Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
The Question about Paying Taxes The teachers of the Law and the chief priests tried to arrest Jesus on the spot, because they knew that he had told this parable against them; but they were afraid of the people.
And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. |
So they looked for an opportunity. They bribed some men to pretend they were sincere, and they sent them to trap Jesus with questions, so that they could hand him over to the authority and power of the Roman Governor. | And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
These spies said to Jesus, “Teacher, we know that what you say and teach is right. We know that you pay no attention to anyone's status, but teach the truth about God's will for people. | And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
Tell us, is it against our Law for us to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor, or not?” | Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cesar, or no?
But Jesus saw through their trick and said to them, | But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
“Show me a silver coin. Whose face and name are these on it?” “The Emperor's,” they answered. | Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cesar’s.
So Jesus said, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.” | And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Cesar the things which be Cesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.
There before the people they could not catch him in a thing, so they kept quiet, amazed at his answer. (; ) | And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
The Question about Rising from Death Then some Sadducees, who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said,
Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, |
“Teacher, Moses wrote this law for us: ‘If a man dies and leaves a wife but no children, that man's brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children.’ | Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Once there were seven brothers; the oldest got married and died without having children. | There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
Then the second one married the woman, | And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
and then the third. The same thing happened to all seven—they died without having children. | And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
Last of all, the woman died. | Last of all the woman died also.
Now, on the day when the dead rise to life, whose wife will she be? All seven of them had married her.” | Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
Jesus answered them, “The men and women of this age marry, | And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
but the men and women who are worthy to rise from death and live in the age to come will not then marry. | But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
They will be like angels and cannot die. They are the children of God, because they have risen from death. | Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
And Moses clearly proves that the dead are raised to life. In the passage about the burning bush he speaks of the Lord as ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ | Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
He is the God of the living, not of the dead, for to him all are alive.” | For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
Some of the teachers of the Law spoke up, “A good answer, Teacher!” | Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
For they did not dare ask him any more questions. (; ) | And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
The Question about the Messiah Jesus asked them, “How can it be said that the Messiah will be the descendant of David?
And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son? |
For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right side | And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
until I put your enemies as a footstool under your feet.’ | Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
David called him ‘Lord’; how, then, can the Messiah be David's descendant?” (; ) | David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
Jesus Warns against the Teachers of the Law As all the people listened to him, Jesus said to his disciples,
Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, |
“Be on your guard against the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplace; who choose the reserved seats in the synagogues and the best places at feasts; | Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
who take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers! Their punishment will be all the worse!” | Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
