1
The Plot against Jesus
The time was near for the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover.
Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
2 The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were afraid of the people, and so they were trying to find a way of putting Jesus to death secretly. (; ,) And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
3
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
Then Satan entered into Judas, called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve disciples.
Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
4 So Judas went off and spoke with the chief priests and the officers of the Temple guard about how he could betray Jesus to them. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
5 They were pleased and offered to pay him money. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
6 Judas agreed to it and started looking for a good chance to hand Jesus over to them without the people knowing about it. (; ; ) And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.
7
Jesus Prepares to Eat the Passover Meal
The day came during the Festival of Unleavened Bread when the lambs for the Passover meal were to be killed.
Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
8 Jesus sent Peter and John with these instructions: “Go and get the Passover meal ready for us to eat.” And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
9 “Where do you want us to get it ready?” they asked him. And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
10 He answered, “As you go into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters, And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.
11 and say to the owner of the house: ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the room where my disciples and I will eat the Passover meal?’ And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
12 He will show you a large furnished room upstairs, where you will get everything ready.” And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
13 They went off and found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal. (; ; ) And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
14
The Lord's Supper
When the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table with the apostles.
And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
15 He said to them, “I have wanted so much to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer! And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
16 For I tell you, I will never eat it until it is given its full meaning in the Kingdom of God.” For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
17 Then Jesus took a cup, gave thanks to God, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
18 I tell you that from now on I will not drink this wine until the Kingdom of God comes.” For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
19 Then he took a piece of bread, gave thanks to God, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 In the same way, he gave them the cup after the supper, saying, “This cup is God's new covenant sealed with my blood, which is poured out for you. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
21 “But, look! The one who betrays me is here at the table with me! But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
22 The Son of Man will die as God has decided, but how terrible for that man who betrays him!” And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!
23 Then they began to ask among themselves which one of them it could be who was going to do this. And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
24
The Argument about Greatness
An argument broke out among the disciples as to which one of them should be thought of as the greatest.
And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the pagans have power over their people, and the rulers claim the title ‘Friends of the People.’ And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26 But this is not the way it is with you; rather, the greatest one among you must be like the youngest, and the leader must be like the servant. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 Who is greater, the one who sits down to eat or the one who serves? The one who sits down, of course. But I am among you as one who serves. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
28 “You have stayed with me all through my trials; Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
29 and just as my Father has given me the right to rule, so I will give you the same right. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
30 You will eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom, and you will sit on thrones to rule over the twelve tribes of Israel. (; ; ) That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
“Simon, Simon! Listen! Satan has received permission to test all of you, to separate the good from the bad, as a farmer separates the wheat from the chaff.
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you turn back to me, you must strengthen your brothers.” But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33 Peter answered, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you and to die with you!” And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 “I tell you, Peter,” Jesus said, “the rooster will not crow tonight until you have said three times that you do not know me.” And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35
Purse, Bag, and Sword
Then Jesus asked his disciples, “When I sent you out that time without purse, bag, or shoes, did you lack anything?” “Not a thing,” they answered.
And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36 “But now,” Jesus said, “whoever has a purse or a bag must take it; and whoever does not have a sword must sell his coat and buy one. Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
37 For I tell you that the scripture which says, ‘He shared the fate of criminals,’ must come true about me, because what was written about me is coming true.” For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
38 The disciples said, “Look! Here are two swords, Lord!” “That is enough!” he replied. (; ) And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
39
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
Jesus left the city and went, as he usually did, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples went with him.
And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
40 When he arrived at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 Then he went off from them about the distance of a stone's throw and knelt down and prayed. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 “Father,” he said, “if you will, take this cup of suffering away from me. Not my will, however, but your will be done.” Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
44 In great anguish he prayed even more fervently; his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 Rising from his prayer, he went back to the disciples and found them asleep, worn out by their grief. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
46 He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not fall into temptation.” (; ; ) And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
47
The Arrest of Jesus
Jesus was still speaking when a crowd arrived, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. He came up to Jesus to kiss him.
And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus said, “Judas, is it with a kiss that you betray the Son of Man?” But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
49 When the disciples who were with Jesus saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Shall we use our swords, Lord?” When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
50 And one of them struck the High Priest's slave and cut off his right ear. And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus said, “Enough of this!” He touched the man's ear and healed him. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and the officers of the Temple guard and the elders who had come there to get him, “Did you have to come with swords and clubs, as though I were an outlaw? Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?
53 I was with you in the Temple every day, and you did not try to arrest me. But this is your hour to act, when the power of darkness rules.” (,,; ,,; ,) When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
54
Peter Denies Jesus
They arrested Jesus and took him away into the house of the High Priest; and Peter followed at a distance.
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.
55 A fire had been lit in the center of the courtyard, and Peter joined those who were sitting around it. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.
56 When one of the servant women saw him sitting there at the fire, she looked straight at him and said, “This man too was with Jesus!” But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
57 But Peter denied it, “Woman, I don't even know him!” And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
58 After a little while a man noticed Peter and said, “You are one of them, too!” But Peter answered, “Man, I am not!” And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
59 And about an hour later another man insisted strongly, “There isn't any doubt that this man was with Jesus, because he also is a Galilean!” And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilean.
60 But Peter answered, “Man, I don't know what you are talking about!” At once, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
61 The Lord turned around and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered that the Lord had said to him, “Before the rooster crows tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.” And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
62 Peter went out and wept bitterly. (,; ) And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
63
Jesus Is Mocked and Beaten
The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him and beat him.
And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.
64 They blindfolded him and asked him, “Who hit you? Guess!” And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?
65 And they said many other insulting things to him. (; ; ) And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
66
Jesus before the Council
When day came, the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law met together, and Jesus was brought before the Council.
And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
67 “Tell us,” they said, “are you the Messiah?” He answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me; Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68 and if I ask you a question, you will not answer. And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right side of Almighty God.” Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
70 They all said, “Are you, then, the Son of God?” He answered them, “You say that I am.” Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
71 And they said, “We don't need any witnesses! We ourselves have heard what he said!” And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
