1 我小子乎、我書此遺爾、免爾干罪、人若干罪、則於父前我儕有代言者、卽義者耶穌基督也、 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 彼爲我罪作挽回之祭、不第爲我、亦爲舉世焉、 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 我若守其誡、則自知識之也、 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 人自謂識之、而不守其誡、則爲誑者、眞理不在彼衷矣、 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 惟守其道者、則上帝之愛、誠成全於彼矣、以是知我儕在主中也、 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 自謂恆在主中者、其所行當如彼所行也、○ He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
7 愛友乎、我書與爾者、非新誡、乃爾自初所有之舊誡、舊誡也者、卽爾所聞之道也、 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 再者、我以新誡書與爾、其事在彼爲眞、在爾亦然、因幽暗漸逝、眞光已照矣、 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 人自謂在光中、而惡兄弟、乃尚在暗中也、 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 愛兄弟者、乃居光中、無由傾躓、 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 惟惡兄弟者、乃在暗中、且行於暗中、不知所往、因暗盲其目也、○ But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
12 小子乎、我書與爾、以爾諸罪、因其名見赦矣、 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
13 父老乎、我書與爾、以爾識自始而有者、少者乎、我書與爾、以爾已勝惡者、孺子乎、我曾書與爾、以爾識父、 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
14 父老乎、我曾書與爾、以爾識自始而有者、少者乎、我曾書與爾、以爾剛健、且上帝之道、恆在爾中、而爾已勝惡者、 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
15 勿愛斯世與在世之物、人若愛世、則父之愛不在其衷、 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 蓋凡在世者、如形軀之慾、眼目之慾、並此生之驕矜、皆非由父、乃由世也、 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 且世漸逝、其慾亦然、惟行上帝旨者永存、○ And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 孺子乎、斯乃末時、爾嘗聞有敵基督者至、今已多有敵基督者興起矣、以是知爲末時也、 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 彼自我而出、但非屬我者、若其屬我、則恆偕我矣、然其出也、乃顯其皆非屬我也、 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
20 爾受膏於聖者、無不知也、 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21 我書與爾、非因爾不識眞理、乃因爾識之、且凡虛誑、非由於眞理也、 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 誑者誰耶、非不認耶穌爲基督者乎、其不認父與子者、卽敵基督者也、 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23 凡不認子者、不有父也、認子者、卽有父也、 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
24 爾曹自始所聞者、當恆在爾衷、若然、則爾亦恆在子及父中矣、 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
25 此其所許於我者、卽永生也、 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
26 我書此遺爾、乃指誤誨爾之人、 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27 惟爾自主所受之膏、恆在爾衷、則不須人訓爾、彼之膏、卽以諸事訓爾、是乃眞而無誑、爾當依其所訓、恆在彼中焉、 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
28 小子乎、今宜恆在彼中、迨彼顯著、我儕於其降臨時、可毅然而無愧、 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
29 爾若知彼爲義、則知凡行義者、皆由之而生也、 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
