| 1 | 試觀父以如何之愛賜我儕、俾得稱爲上帝子、我儕誠是也、斯世不識我、因其不識彼也、 | Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. |
| 2 | 愛友乎、我儕今爲上帝子、將來若何、尚未顯明、所可知者、彼顯著時、我克肖之、蓋將見之、如其固然也、 | Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. |
| 3 | 且凡於彼有此望者、則潔己如彼之潔然、 | And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. |
| 4 | 凡行罪者、亦行不法、罪卽不法也、 | Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. |
| 5 | 爾知彼曾顯見、以除諸罪、而於彼無罪也、 | And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. |
| 6 | 凡恆在彼中者不干罪、干罪者未嘗見之、亦未嘗識之、 | Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. |
| 7 | 小子乎、勿爲人所惑、行義者乃義、如彼之義然、 | Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. |
| 8 | 行罪者乃由於魔、蓋魔自始干罪、上帝子所以顯見者、爲毀魔之工也、 | He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. |
| 9 | 凡由上帝而生者不行罪、以其種恆在厥衷、其不能干罪者、因由上帝而生也、 | Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. |
| 10 | 上帝子與魔之子、於此而顯、凡不行義者、非由上帝也、不愛兄弟者亦然、 | In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. |
| 11 | 爾自初所聞之諭、卽我儕宜相愛也、 | For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. |
| 12 | 非若該隱、由夫惡者而殺其弟、其殺之也何故、因其行惡而弟義也、○ | Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. |
| 13 | 兄弟乎、世若惡爾、勿以爲奇、 | Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. |
| 14 | 我儕因愛兄弟、知已出死入生、不愛者仍居於死、 | We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. |
| 15 | 凡惡兄弟、乃殺人者也、爾知殺人者、永生不寓其衷、 | Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. |
| 16 | 主爲我儕舍生、我儕於此而知愛、亦宜爲兄弟舍生也、 | Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
| 17 | 凡有斯世之財產者、視兄弟匱乏、自塞其矜恤之心、則上帝之愛烏得寓其衷哉、 | But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? |
| 18 | 小子乎、我儕之愛、勿以言以舌、乃以行以誠也、 | My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. |
| 19 | 於此知我儕由於眞理、凡我心所自責者、則將安之於上帝前、 | And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. |
| 20 | 因上帝大於我心、而無所不知也、 | For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. |
| 21 | 愛友乎、我心若不自責、則可毅然於上帝前、 | Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. |
| 22 | 且凡所求者必得之、因我儕守其誡、而行其所悅之事也、 | And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. |
| 23 | 其誡也、卽我儕宜信其子耶穌基督之名、且依其所命而相愛也、 | And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. |
| 24 | 守其誡者、恆在彼中、彼亦恆在其中、由彼所賜我之聖神、知彼恆在我中也、 | And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. |
