He Speaks: My bride, my very own, I come to my garden and enjoy its spices. I eat my honeycomb and honey; I drink my wine and milk. Eat and drink until you are drunk with love.
I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved. |
Their Friends Speak: / Another Dream / She Speaks: I was asleep, but dreaming: The one I love was at the door, knocking and saying, “My darling, my very own, my flawless dove, open the door for me! My head is drenched with evening dew.”
I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night. |
But I had already undressed and bathed my feet. Should I dress again and get my feet dirty? | I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?
Then my darling's hand reached to open the latch, and my heart stood still. | My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.
When I rose to open the door, my hands and my fingers dripped with perfume. | I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock.
And I yearned for him while he spoke to me, but when I opened the door, my darling had disappeared. I searched and shouted, but I could not find him— there was no answer. | I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
Then I was found by the guards patrolling the town and guarding the wall. They beat me up and stripped off my robe. | The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.
Young women of Jerusalem, if you find the one I love, please say to him, “She is weak with desire.” | I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love.
Their Friends Speak: Most beautiful of women, why is the one you love more special than others? Why do you ask us to tell him how you feel?
What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us? |
She Speaks: He is handsome and healthy, the most outstanding among ten thousand.
My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand. |
His head is purest gold; his hair is wavy, black as a raven. | His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.
His eyes are a pair of doves bathing in a stream flowing with milk. | His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.
His face is a garden of sweet-smelling spices; his lips are lilies dripping with perfume. | His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.
His arms are branches of gold covered with jewels; his body is ivory decorated with sapphires. | His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl: his belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires.
His legs are columns of marble on feet of gold. He stands there majestic like Mount Lebanon and its choice cedar trees. | His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold: his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.
His kisses are sweet. I desire him so much! Young women of Jerusalem, he is my lover and friend. | His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
