1
Their Friends Speak:
Most beautiful of women, tell us where he has gone. Let us help you find him.
Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
2
She Speaks:
My darling has gone down to his garden of spices, where he will feed his sheep and gather lilies.
My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
3 I am his, and he is mine, as he feeds his sheep among the lilies. I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.
4
He Speaks:
My dearest, the cities of Tirzah and Jerusalem are not as lovely as you. Your charms are more powerful than all of the stars in the heavens.
Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.
5 Turn away your eyes— they make me melt. Your hair tosses about as gracefully as goats coming down from Gilead. Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.
6 Your teeth are whiter than sheep freshly washed; they match perfectly, not one is missing. Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
7 Behind your veil are hidden beautiful rosy cheeks. As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
8 What if I could have sixty queens, eighty wives, and thousands of others! There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
9 You would be my only choice, my flawless dove, the favorite child of your mother. The young women, the queens, and all the others tell how excited you are as they sing your praises: My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
10 “You are as majestic as the morning sky— glorious as the moon— blinding as the sun! Your charms are more powerful than all the stars above.” Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?
11
She Speaks:
I went down to see if blossoms were on the walnut trees, grapevines, and fruit trees.
I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded.
12 But in my imagination I was suddenly riding on a glorious chariot. Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib.
13
Their Friends Speak:
Dance! Dance! Beautiful woman from Shulam, let us see you dance! Why do you want to see this woman from Shulam dancing with the others?
Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.
