Zacchaeus Jesus was going through Jericho,
And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. |
where a man named Zacchaeus lived. He was in charge of collecting taxes and was very rich. | And, behold, there was a man named Zaccheus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
— | And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
Jesus was heading his way, and Zacchaeus wanted to see what he was like. But Zacchaeus was a short man and could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree. | And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
When Jesus got there, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down! I want to stay with you today.” | And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zaccheus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
Zacchaeus hurried down and gladly welcomed Jesus. | And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
Everyone who saw this started grumbling, “This man Zacchaeus is a sinner! And Jesus is going home to eat with him.” | And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
Later that day Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “I will give half of my property to the poor. And I will now pay back four times as much to everyone I have ever cheated.” | And Zaccheus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “Today you and your family have been saved, because you are a true son of Abraham. | And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost.” () | For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
A Story about Ten Servants The crowd was still listening to Jesus as he was getting close to Jerusalem. Many of them thought that God's kingdom would soon appear,
And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. |
and Jesus told them this story: A prince once went to a foreign country to be crowned king and then to return. | He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
But before leaving, he called in ten servants and gave each of them some money. He told them, “Use this to earn more money until I get back.” | And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
But the people of his country hated him, and they sent messengers to the foreign country to say, “We don't want this man to be our king.” | But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
After the prince had been made king, he returned and called in his servants. He asked them how much they had earned with the money they had been given. | And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
The first servant came and said, “Sir, with the money you gave me I have earned ten times as much.” | Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
“That's fine, my good servant!” the king said. “Since you have shown that you can be trusted with a small amount, you will be given ten cities to rule.” | And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
The second one came and said, “Sir, with the money you gave me, I have earned five times as much.” | And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
The king said, “You will be given five cities.” | And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
Another servant came and said, “Sir, here is your money. I kept it safe in a handkerchief. | And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
You are a hard man, and I was afraid of you. You take what isn't yours, and you harvest crops you didn't plant.” | For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
“You worthless servant!” the king told him. “You have condemned yourself by what you have just said. You knew I am a hard man, taking what isn't mine and harvesting what I've not planted. | And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
Why didn't you put my money in the bank? On my return, I could have had the money together with interest.” | Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
Then he said to some other servants standing there, “Take the money away from him and give it to the servant who earned ten times as much.” | And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
But they said, “Sir, he already has ten times as much!” | (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
The king replied, “Those who have something will be given more. But everything will be taken away from those who don't have anything. | For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
Now bring me the enemies who didn't want me to be their king. Kill them while I watch!” (; ; ) | But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
Jesus Enters Jerusalem When Jesus had finished saying all this, he went on toward Jerusalem.
And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem. |
As he was getting near Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples on ahead. | And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
He told them, “Go into the next village, where you will find a young donkey that has never been ridden. Untie the donkey and bring it here. | Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
If anyone asks why you are doing this, just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” | And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
They went off and found everything just as Jesus had said. | And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
While they were untying the donkey, its owners asked, “Why are you doing that?” | And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
They answered, “The Lord needs it.” | And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
Then they led the donkey to Jesus. They put some of their clothes on its back and helped Jesus get on. | And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
And as he rode along, the people spread clothes on the road in front of him. | And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
When Jesus started down the Mount of Olives, his large crowd of disciples were happy and praised God because of all the miracles they had seen. | And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
They shouted, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory to God.” | Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
Some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, make your disciples stop shouting!” | And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
But Jesus answered, “If they keep quiet, these stones will start shouting.” | And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
When Jesus came closer and could see Jerusalem, he cried | And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
and said: It is too bad that today your people don't know what will bring them peace! Now it is hidden from them. | Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
Jerusalem, the time will come when your enemies will build walls around you to attack you. Armies will surround you and close in on you from every side. | For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
They will level you to the ground and kill your people. Not one stone in your buildings will be left on top of another. This will happen because you did not see that God had come to save you. (; ; ) | And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
Jesus in the Temple When Jesus entered the temple, he started chasing out the people who were selling things.
And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; |
He told them, “The Scriptures say, ‘My house should be a place of worship.’ But you have made it a place where robbers hide!” | Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Each day, Jesus kept on teaching in the temple. So the chief priests, the teachers of the Law of Moses, and some other important people tried to have him killed. | And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
But they could not find a way to do it, because everyone else was eager to listen to him. | And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
