A Widow and a Judge Jesus told his disciples a story about how they should keep on praying and never give up:
And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; |
In a town there was once a judge who didn't fear God or care about people. | Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:
In that same town there was a widow who kept going to the judge and saying, “Make sure that I get fair treatment in court.” | And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
For a while the judge refused to do anything. Finally, he said to himself, “Even though I don't fear God or care about people, | And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
I will help this widow because she keeps on bothering me. If I don't help her, she will wear me out.” | Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.
The Lord said: Think about what that crooked judge said. | And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.
Won't God protect his chosen ones who pray to him day and night? Won't he be concerned for them? | And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
He will surely hurry and help them. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find on this earth anyone with faith? | I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
A Pharisee and a Tax Collector Jesus told a story to some people who thought they were better than others and who looked down on everyone else:
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: |
Two men went into the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. | Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
The Pharisee stood over by himself and prayed, “God, I thank you that I am not greedy, dishonest, and unfaithful in marriage like other people. And I am really glad that I am not like that tax collector over there. | The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
I go without eating for two days a week, and I give you one tenth of all I earn.” | I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
The tax collector stood off at a distance and did not think he was good enough even to look up toward heaven. He was so sorry for what he had done that he pounded his chest and prayed, “God, have pity on me! I am such a sinner.” | And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
Then Jesus said, “When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.” (; ) | I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Jesus Blesses Little Children Some people brought their little children for Jesus to bless. But when his disciples saw them doing this, they told the people to stop bothering him.
And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them. |
So Jesus called the children over to him and said, “Let the children come to me! Don't try to stop them. People who are like these children belong to God's kingdom. | But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
You will never get into God's kingdom unless you enter it like a child!” (; ) | Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.
A Rich and Important Man An important man asked Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to have eternal life?”
And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? |
Jesus said, “Why do you call me good? Only God is good. | And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
You know the commandments: ‘Be faithful in marriage. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not tell lies about others. Respect your father and mother.’ ” | Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
He told Jesus, “I have obeyed all these commandments since I was a young man.” | And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
When Jesus heard this, he said, “There is one thing you still need to do. Go and sell everything you own! Give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come and be my follower.” | Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
When the man heard this, he was sad, because he was very rich. | And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
Jesus saw how sad the man was. So he said, “It's terribly hard for rich people to get into God's kingdom! | And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
In fact, it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into God's kingdom.” | For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
When the crowd heard this, they asked, “How can anyone ever be saved?” | And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved?
Jesus replied, “There are some things that people cannot do, but God can do anything.” | And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
Peter said, “Remember, we left everything to be your followers!” | Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.
Jesus answered, “You can be sure that anyone who gives up home or wife or brothers or family or children because of God's kingdom | And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,
will be given much more in this life. And in the future world they will have eternal life.” (; ) | Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
Jesus Again Tells about His Death Jesus took the twelve apostles aside and said: We are now on our way to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will happen there.
Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. |
He will be handed over to foreigners, who will make fun of him, mistreat him, and spit on him. | For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:
They will beat him and kill him, but three days later he will rise to life. | And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.
The apostles did not understand what Jesus was talking about. They could not understand, because the meaning of what he said was hidden from them. (; ) | And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar When Jesus was coming close to Jericho, a blind man sat begging beside the road.
And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging: |
The man heard the crowd walking by and asked what was happening. | And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant.
Some people told him that Jesus from Nazareth was passing by. | And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.
So the blind man shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” | And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
The people who were going along with Jesus told the man to be quiet. But he shouted even louder, “Son of David, have pity on me!” | And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
Jesus stopped and told some people to bring the blind man over to him. When the blind man was getting near, Jesus asked, | And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him,
“What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see!” he answered. | Saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
Jesus replied, “Look and you will see! Your eyes are healed because of your faith.” | And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.
At once the man could see, and he went with Jesus and started thanking God. When the crowds saw what happened, they praised God. | And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.
