A Question about Jesus' Authority One day, Jesus was teaching in the temple and telling the good news. So the chief priests, the teachers, and the nation's leaders
And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, |
asked him, “What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?” | And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
Jesus replied, “I want to ask you a question. | And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
Who gave John the right to baptize? Was it God in heaven or merely some human being?” | The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
They talked this over and said to each other, “We can't say God gave John this right. Jesus will ask us why we didn't believe John. | And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
And we can't say it was merely some human who gave John the right to baptize. The crowd will stone us to death, because they think John was a prophet.” | But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
So they told Jesus, “We don't know who gave John the right to baptize.” | And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
Jesus replied, “Then I won't tell you who gave me the right to do what I do.” (; ) | And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
Renters of a Vineyard Jesus told the people this story: A man once planted a vineyard and rented it out. Then he left the country for a long time.
Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. |
When it was time to harvest the crop, he sent a servant to ask the renters for his share of the grapes. But they beat up the servant and sent him away without anything. | And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.
So the owner sent another servant. The renters also beat him up. They insulted him terribly and sent him away without a thing. | And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
The owner sent a third servant. He was also beaten terribly and thrown out of the vineyard. | And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
The owner then said to himself, “What am I going to do? I know what. I'll send my son, the one I love so much. They will surely respect him!” | Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
When the renters saw the owner's son, they said to one another, “Someday he will own the vineyard. Let's kill him! Then we can have it all for ourselves.” | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Jesus asked, “What do you think the owner of the vineyard will do? | So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
I'll tell you what. He will come and kill those renters and let someone else have his vineyard.” When the people heard this, they said, “This must never happen!” | He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.
But Jesus looked straight at them and said, “Then what do the Scriptures mean when they say, ‘The stone the builders tossed aside is now the most important stone of all’? | And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
Anyone who stumbles over this stone will get hurt, and anyone it falls on will be smashed to pieces.” | Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses knew that Jesus was talking about them when he was telling this story. They wanted to arrest him right then, but they were afraid of the people. (; ) | And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
Paying Taxes Jesus' enemies kept watching him closely, because they wanted to hand him over to the Roman governor. So they sent some men who pretended to be good. But they were really spies trying to catch Jesus saying something wrong.
And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. |
The spies said to him, “Teacher, we know you teach the truth about what God wants people to do. And you treat everyone with the same respect, no matter who they are. | And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
Tell us, should we pay taxes to the Emperor or not?” | Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cesar, or no?
Jesus knew they were trying to trick him. So he told them, | But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
“Show me a coin.” Then he asked, “Whose picture and name are on it?” “The Emperor's,” they answered. | Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cesar’s.
Then he told them, “Give the Emperor what belongs to him and give God what belongs to God.” | And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Cesar the things which be Cesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.
Jesus' enemies could not catch him saying anything wrong there in front of the people. They were amazed at his answer and kept quiet. (; ) | And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
Life in the Future World The Sadducees did not believe that people would rise to life after death. So some of them came to Jesus
Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, |
and said: Teacher, Moses wrote that if a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry the widow. Their first son would then be thought of as the son of the dead brother. | Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
There were once seven brothers. The first one married, but died without having any children. | There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
The second one married his brother's widow, and he also died without having any children. | And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
The same thing happened to the third one. Finally, all seven brothers married this woman and died without having any children. | And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
At last the woman died. | Last of all the woman died also.
When God raises people from death, whose wife will this woman be? All seven brothers had married her. | Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
Jesus answered: The people in this world get married. | And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
But in the future world no one who is worthy to rise from death will either marry | But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
or die. They will be like the angels and will be God's children, because they have been raised to life. | Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
In the story about the burning bush, Moses clearly shows that people will live again. He said, “The Lord is the God worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” | Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
So the Lord isn't the God of the dead, but of the living. This means that everyone is alive as far as God is concerned. | For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
Some of the teachers of the Law of Moses said, “Teacher, you have given a good answer!” | Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
From then on, no one dared to ask Jesus any questions. (; ) | And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
About David's Son Jesus asked, “Why do people say that the Messiah will be the son of King David?
And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son? |
In the book of Psalms, David himself says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right side | And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
until I make your enemies into a footstool for you.’ | Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
David spoke of the Messiah as his Lord, so how can the Messiah be his son?” (; ; ) | David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
Jesus and the Teachers of the Law of Moses While everyone was listening to Jesus, he said to his disciples:
Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, |
Guard against the teachers of the Law of Moses! They love to walk around in long robes, and they like to be greeted in the market. They want the front seats in the synagogues and the best seats at banquets. | Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
But they cheat widows out of their homes and then pray long prayers just to show off. These teachers will be punished most of all. | Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
