Warnings As thousands of people crowded around Jesus and were stepping on each other, he told his disciples: Be sure to guard against the dishonest teaching of the Pharisees! It is their way of fooling people.
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. |
Everything that is hidden will be found out, and every secret will be known. | For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
Whatever you say in the dark will be heard when it is day. Whatever you whisper in a closed room will be shouted from the housetops. () | Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
The One To Fear My friends, don't be afraid of people. They can kill you, but after that, there is nothing else they can do.
And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. |
God is the one you must fear. Not only can he take your life, but he can throw you into hell. God is certainly the one you should fear! | But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Five sparrows are sold for only a few cents, but God doesn't forget a single one of them. | Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
Even the hairs on your head are counted. So don't be afraid! You are worth much more than many sparrows. (,; ; ,) | But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Telling Others about Christ If you tell others that you belong to me, the Son of Man will tell God's angels that you are my followers.
Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: |
But if you reject me, you will be rejected in front of them. | But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
If you speak against the Son of Man, you can be forgiven, but if you speak against the Holy Spirit, you cannot be forgiven. | And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
When you are brought to trial in the synagogues or before rulers or officials, don't worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say. | And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
At that time the Holy Spirit will tell you what to say. | For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
A Rich Fool A man in a crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to give me my share of what our father left us when he died.”
And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. |
Jesus answered, “Who gave me the right to settle arguments between you and your brother?” | And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
Then he said to the crowd, “Don't be greedy! Owning a lot of things won't make your life safe.” | And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
So Jesus told them this story: A rich man's farm produced a big crop, | And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
and he said to himself, “What can I do? I don't have a place large enough to store everything.” | And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
Later, he said, “Now I know what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones, where I can store all my grain and other goods. | And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
Then I'll say to myself, ‘You have stored up enough good things to last for years to come. Live it up! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.’ ” | And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
But God said to him, “You fool! Tonight you will die. Then who will get what you have stored up?” | But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
“This is what happens to people who store up everything for themselves, but are poor in the sight of God.” () | So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Worry Jesus said to his disciples: I tell you not to worry about your life! Don't worry about having something to eat or wear.
And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. |
Life is more than food or clothing. | The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
Look at the crows! They don't plant or harvest, and they don't have storehouses or barns. But God takes care of them. You are much more important than any birds. | Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
Can worry make you live longer? | And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?
If you don't have power over small things, why worry about everything else? | If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?
Look how the wild flowers grow! They don't work hard to make their clothes. But I tell you Solomon with all his wealth wasn't as well clothed as one of these flowers. | Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
God gives such beauty to everything that grows in the fields, even though it is here today and thrown into a fire tomorrow. Won't he do even more for you? You have such little faith! | If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Don't keep worrying about having something to eat or drink. | And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
Only people who don't know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father knows what you need. | For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
But put God's work first, and these things will be yours as well. () | But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Treasures in Heaven My little group of disciples, don't be afraid! Your Father wants to give you the kingdom.
Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. |
Sell what you have and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves moneybags that never wear out. Make sure your treasure is safe in heaven, where thieves cannot steal it and moths cannot destroy it. | Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
Your heart will always be where your treasure is. () | For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Faithful and Unfaithful Servants Be ready and keep your lamps burning
Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; |
just like those servants who wait up for their master to return from a wedding feast. As soon as he comes and knocks, they open the door for him. | And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.
Servants are fortunate if their master finds them awake and ready when he comes! I promise you he will get ready and let his servants sit down so he can serve them. | Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
Those servants are really fortunate if their master finds them ready, even though he comes late at night or early in the morning. | And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
You would surely not let a thief break into your home, if you knew when the thief was coming. | And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.
So always be ready! You don't know when the Son of Man will come. | Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
Peter asked Jesus, “Did you say this just for us or for everyone?” | Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?
The Lord answered: Who are faithful and wise servants? Who are the ones the master will put in charge of giving the other servants their food supplies at the proper time? | And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
Servants are fortunate if their master comes and finds them doing their job. | Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
A servant who is always faithful will surely be put in charge of everything the master owns. | Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
But suppose one of the servants thinks that the master won't return until late. Suppose that servant starts beating all the other servants and eats and drinks and gets drunk. | But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
If that happens, the master will come on a day and at a time when the servant least expects him. That servant will then be punished and thrown out with the servants who cannot be trusted. | The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
If servants are not ready or willing to do what their master wants them to do, they will be beaten hard. | And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
But servants who don't know what their master wants them to do will not be beaten so hard for doing wrong. If God has been generous with you, he will expect you to serve him well. But if he has been more than generous, he will expect you to serve him even better. () | But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Not Peace, but Trouble I came to set fire to the earth, and I wish it were already on fire!
I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? |
I am going to be put to a hard test. And I will have to suffer a lot of pain until it is over. | But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
Do you think that I came to bring peace to earth? No indeed! I came to make people choose sides. | Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
A family of five will be divided, with two of them against the other three. | For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
Fathers and sons will turn against one another, and mothers and daughters will do the same. Mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law will also turn against each other. (,; ,) | The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Knowing What To Do Jesus said to all the people: As soon as you see a cloud coming up in the west, you say, “It's going to rain,” and it does.
And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. |
When the south wind blows, you say, “It's going to get hot,” and it does. | And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
Are you trying to fool someone? You can predict the weather by looking at the earth and sky, but you don't really know what's going on right now. | Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
Why don't you understand the right thing to do? | Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
When someone accuses you of something, try to settle things before you are taken to court. If you don't, you will be dragged before the judge. Then the judge will hand you over to the jailer, and you will be locked up. | When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.
You won't get out until you have paid the last cent you owe. | I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
