Turn Back to God About this same time Jesus was told that Pilate had given orders for some people from Galilee to be killed while they were offering sacrifices.
There were present at that season some that told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. |
Jesus replied: Do you think that these people were worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee just because of what happened to them? | And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things?
Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also be killed. | I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
What about those 18 people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were worse than everyone else in Jerusalem? | Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also die. | I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
A Story about a Fig Tree Jesus then told them this story: A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard. One day he went out to pick some figs, but he didn't find any.
He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. |
So he said to the gardener, “For three years I have come looking for figs on this tree, and I haven't found any yet. Chop it down! Why should it take up space?” | Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
The gardener answered, “Master, leave it for another year. I'll dig around it and put some manure on it to make it grow. | And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
Maybe it will have figs on it next year. If it doesn't, you can have it cut down.” | And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.
Healing a Woman on the Sabbath One Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,
And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. |
and a woman was there who had been crippled by an evil spirit for 18 years. She was completely bent over and could not straighten up. | And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
When Jesus saw the woman, he called her over and said, “You are now well.” | And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
He placed his hands on her, and at once she stood up straight and praised God. | And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
The man in charge of the synagogue was angry because Jesus had healed someone on the Sabbath. So he said to the people, “Each week has six days when we can work. Come and be healed on one of those days, but not on the Sabbath.” | And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
The Lord replied, “Are you trying to fool someone? Won't any one of you untie your ox or donkey and lead it out to drink on a Sabbath? | The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?
This woman belongs to the family of Abraham, but Satan has kept her bound for 18 years. Isn't it right to set her free on the Sabbath?” | And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
Jesus' words made his enemies ashamed. But everyone else in the crowd was happy about the wonderful things he was doing. (; ) | And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
A Mustard Seed and Yeast Jesus said, “What is God's kingdom like? What can I compare it with?
Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? |
It is like what happens when someone plants a mustard seed in a garden. The seed grows as big as a tree, and birds nest in its branches.” | It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
Then Jesus said, “What can I compare God's kingdom with? | And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
It is like what happens when a woman mixes yeast into three batches of flour. Finally, all the dough rises.” (,,) | It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
The Narrow Door As Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he taught the people in the towns and villages.
And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. |
Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” Jesus answered: | Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,
Do all you can to go in by the narrow door! A lot of people will try to get in, but will not be able to. | Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
Once the owner of the house gets up and locks the door, you will be left standing outside. You will knock on the door and say, “Sir, open the door for us!” But the owner will answer, “I don't know a thing about you!” | When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:
Then you will start saying, “We dined with you, and you taught in our streets.” | Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.
But he will say, “I really don't know who you are! Get away from me, you evil people!” | But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
Then when you have been thrown outside, you will weep and grit your teeth because you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God's kingdom. | There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.
People will come from all directions and sit down to feast in God's kingdom. | And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.
There the ones who are now least important will be the most important, and those who are now most important will be least important. | And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
Jesus and Herod At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “You had better get away from here, because Herod wants to kill you!”
The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee. |
Jesus said to them: Go tell that fox, “I am going to force out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and three days later I'll be through.” | And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
But I am going on my way today and tomorrow and the next day. After all, Jerusalem is the place where prophets are killed. () | Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
Jesus Loves Jerusalem Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not! |
Now your temple will be deserted. You won't see me again until the time when you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” | Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
