1
Prayer
When Jesus had finished praying, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his followers to pray.”
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
2 So Jesus told them, “Pray in this way: ‘Father, help us to honor your name. Come and set up your kingdom. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us each day the food we need. Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 Forgive our sins, as we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us. And keep us from being tempted.’ ” And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
5 Then Jesus went on to say: Suppose one of you goes to a friend in the middle of the night and says, “Let me borrow three loaves of bread. And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
6 A friend of mine has dropped in, and I don't have a thing for him to eat.” For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
7 And suppose your friend answers, “Don't bother me! The door is bolted, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you something.” And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
8 He may not get up and give you the bread, just because you are his friend. But he will get up and give you as much as you need, simply because you are not ashamed to keep on asking. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
9 So I tell you to ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 Which one of you fathers would give your hungry child a snake if the child asked for a fish? If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 Which one of you would give your child a scorpion if the child asked for an egg? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who asks. (; ) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Jesus and the Ruler of Demons
Jesus forced a demon out of a man who could not talk. And after the demon had gone out, the man started speaking, and the crowds were amazed.
And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.
15 But some people said, “He forces out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons!” But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
16 Others wanted to put Jesus to the test. So they asked him to show them a sign from God. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
17 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said: A kingdom where people fight each other will end up in ruin. And a family that fights will break up. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
18 If Satan fights against himself, how can his kingdom last? Yet you say that I force out demons by the power of Beelzebul. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
19 If I use his power to force out demons, whose power do your own followers use to force them out? They are the ones who will judge you. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
20 But if I use God's power to force out demons, it proves that God's kingdom has already come to you. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.
21 When a strong man arms himself and guards his home, everything he owns is safe. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
22 But if a stronger man comes and defeats him, he will carry off the weapons in which the strong man trusted. Then he will divide with others what he has taken. But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
23 If you are not on my side, you are against me. If you don't gather in the crop with me, you scatter it. () He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
24
Return of an Evil Spirit
When an evil spirit leaves a person, it travels through the desert, looking for a place to rest. But when it doesn't find a place, it says, “I will go back to the home I left.”
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
25 When it gets there and finds the place clean and fixed up, And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
26 it goes off and finds seven other evil spirits even worse than itself. They all come and make their home there, and that person ends up in worse shape than before. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
27
Being Really Blessed
While Jesus was still talking, a woman in the crowd spoke up, “The woman who gave birth to you and nursed you is blessed!”
And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
28 Jesus replied, “That's true, but the people who are really blessed are the ones who hear and obey God's message!” (; ) But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
29
A Sign from God
As crowds were gathering around Jesus, he said: You people of today are evil! You keep looking for a sign from God. But what happened to Jonah is the only sign you will be given.
And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
30 Just as Jonah was a sign to the people of Nineveh, the Son of Man will be a sign to the people of today. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
31 When the judgment comes, the Queen of the South will stand there with you and condemn you. She traveled a long way to hear Solomon's wisdom, and yet here is something far greater than Solomon. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
32 The people of Nineveh will also stand there with you and condemn you. They turned to God when Jonah preached, and yet here is something far greater than Jonah. (; ,) The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

Light
No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a clay pot. A lamp is put on a lampstand, so everyone who comes into the house can see the light.
No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 Your eyes are the lamp for your body. When your eyes are good, you have all the light you need. But when your eyes are bad, everything is dark. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 So be sure your light isn't darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
36 If you have light, and nothing is dark, then light will be everywhere, as when a lamp shines brightly on you. (; ; ) If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

Jesus Condemns the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law of Moses
When Jesus finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him home for a meal. Jesus went and sat down to eat.
And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.
38 The Pharisee was surprised that he did not wash his hands before eating. And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.
39 So the Lord said to him: You Pharisees clean the outside of cups and dishes, but on the inside you are greedy and evil. And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
40 You fools! Didn't God make both the outside and the inside? Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
41 If you would only give what you have to the poor, everything you do would please God. But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
42 You Pharisees are in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your gardens, such as mint and rue. But you cheat people, and you don't love God. You should be fair and kind to others and still give a tenth to God. But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
43 You Pharisees are in for trouble! You love the front seats in the synagogues, and you like to be greeted with honor in the market. Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
44 But you are in for trouble! You are like unmarked graves that people walk on without even knowing it. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
45 A teacher of the Law of Moses spoke up, “Teacher, you said cruel things about us.” Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
46 Jesus replied: You teachers are also in for trouble! You load people down with heavy burdens, but you won't lift a finger to help them carry the loads. And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
47 Yes, you are really in for trouble. You build monuments to honor the prophets your own people murdered long ago. Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
48 You must think that was the right thing for your people to do, or else you would not have built monuments for the prophets they murdered. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
49 Because of your evil deeds, the Wisdom of God said, “I will send prophets and apostles to you. But you will murder some and mistreat others.” Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
50 You people living today will be punished for all the prophets who have been murdered since the beginning of the world. That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
51 This includes every prophet from the time of Abel to the time of Zechariah, who was murdered between the altar and the temple. You people will certainly be punished for all of this. From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
52 You teachers of the Law of Moses are really in for trouble! You carry the keys to the door of knowledge about God. But you never go in, and you keep others from going in. Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
53 Jesus was about to leave, but the teachers and the Pharisees wanted to get even with him. They tried to make him say what he thought about other things, And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
54 so they could catch him saying something wrong. Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
