Therfor Y boundun for the Lord biseche you, that ye walke worthili in the clepyng, | I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
in which ye ben clepid, with al mekenesse and myldenesse, with pacience supportinge ech other in charite, | With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
bisi to kepe vnyte of spirit in the boond of pees. | Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
O bodi and o spirit, as ye ben clepid in oon hope of youre cleping; | There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
o Lord, | One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
o feith, o baptym, o God and fadir of alle, which is aboue alle men, and bi alle thingis, and in vs alle. | One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
But to ech of vs grace is youun bi the mesure of the yyuyng of Crist; | But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
for which thing he seith, He stiynge an hiy, ledde caitifte caitif, he yaf yiftis to men. | Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
But what is it, that he stiede vp, no but that also he cam doun first in to the lowere partis of the erthe? | (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
He it is that cam doun, and that stiede on alle heuenes, that he schulde fille alle thingis. | He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
And he yaf summe apostlis, summe prophetis, othere euangelistis, othere scheepherdis and techeris, | And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
to the ful endyng of seyntis, in to the werk of mynystrie, in to edificacioun of Cristis bodi, | For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
til we rennen alle, in to vnyte of feith and of knowyng of Goddis sone, in to a parfit man, aftir the mesure of age of the plente of Crist; | Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
that we be not now litle children, mouynge as wawis, and be not borun aboute with ech wynd of teching, in the weiwardnesse of men, in sutil wit, to the disseyuyng of errour. | That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
But do we treuthe in charite, and wexe in him by alle thingis, that is Crist oure heed; | But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
of whom alle the bodi set togidere, and boundun togidere bi ech ioynture of vnder seruyng, bi worching in to the mesure of ech membre, makith encreesyng of the bodi, in to edificacioun of it silf in charite. | From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Therfor Y seie and witnesse this thing in the Lord, that ye walke not now, as hethene men walken, in the vanyte of her wit; | This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
that han vndurstondyng derkned with derknessis, and ben alienyd fro the lijf of God, bi ignoraunce that is in hem, for the blyndenesse of her herte. | Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Which dispeirynge bitoken hem silf to vnchastite, in to the worchyng of al vnclennesse in coueitise. | Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
But ye han not so lerud Crist, if netheles ye herden hym, | But ye have not so learned Christ;
and ben tauyt in hym, as is treuthe in Jhesu. | If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
Do ye awey bi the elde lyuyng the elde man, that is corrupt bi the desiris of errour; | That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
and be ye renewlid in the spirit of youre soule; | And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
and clothe ye the newe man, which is maad aftir God in riytwisnesse and hoolynesse of treuthe. | And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
For which thing `ye putte awei leesyng, and speke ye treuthe ech man with his neiybore, for we ben membris ech to othere. | Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
Be ye wrooth, and nyle ye do synne; the sunne falle not doun on youre wraththe. | Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Nyle ye yyue stide to the deuel. | Neither give place to the devil.
He that stal, now stele he not; but more trauele he in worchinge with hise hondis that that is good, that he haue whereof he schal yyue to nedi. | Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Ech yuel word go not of youre mouth; but if ony is good to the edificacioun of feith, that it yyue grace to men that heren. | Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
And nyle ye make the Hooli Goost of God sori, in which ye ben markid in the dai of redempcioun. | And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Al bitternesse, and wraththe, and indignacioun, and cry, and blasfemye be takun awey fro you, with al malice; | Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
and be ye togidere benygne, merciful, foryyuynge togidere, as also God foryaf to you in Crist. | And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
